Tips on Using Your Volunteer Time Wisely

1. Research the cause or issues important to you. Look for a group that works with issues for

which you feel strongly. You will enjoy your experience and be more willing to participate

freely, if the organization’s mission is important to you.

2. Consider the skills you have to offer. Enjoy outdoor work? Have a knack for teaching? Love

interacting with people? Use the skills and interests you already have when volunteering.

3. Would you like to learn something new? Perhaps you would like to learn a new skill or gain

exposure to a new situation. Volunteering could also offer a change from your daily routine.

4. Combine your goals. Look for volunteer opportunities that have the potential to help you

achieve your goals for your life. Many people view volunteering as a way to meet new people as

well as to give more meaning to their lives.

5. Don’t over-commit your schedule. Make sure the volunteer hours you want to give fit into your

schedule. It does no good to exhaust yourself by trying to do too many things at once; it only

results in shortchanging the organization you’re trying to help.

6. Non-profits may have questions, too. While most non-profits are eager to find volunteer help,

they have to be careful when accepting the services you offer. If you contact an organization

with an offer to donate your time, you may be asked to come in for interview, fill out a

volunteer application, describe your qualifications and your background, just as you would at an

interview for a paying job.

7. Give voice to your

heart through your

giving and

volunteering! Bring

your heart and your

sense of humor to

your volunteer

service, along with

your enthusiastic

spirit, which in itself

is a priceless gift.

What you’ll get back

will be

immeasurable!

How You Can Make A Difference!

Why me…why now?

When you volunteer you are giving something back to your community by lending a helping hand to

people and organizations. What you may not realize is that volunteering also benefits you as an

individual. There are many good reasons to get involved in the community, including learning what you

care about. There is no wrong way to volunteer. Take a look at the many ways you can volunteer and

find out what volunteer opportunity interests you.

Caring for People

Seniors. Assist an elderly person living independently. Plan a craft session for seniors. Give a party.

Bring your family pet for a visit to a nursing home resident. Arrange for an outing. Adopt a

grandparent by regular visits with a senior who may not have many visitors. Be a lunch buddy. Make

corsages or hand-crafted accessories. Create scrapbooks. Write letters or help residents send cards

to loved ones. Arrange a youth history hour. Develop entertainment programs.

Children. Become a

reading “buddy” with a

child in an after school

program. Become a

homework helper. Send

mail to sick children.

Raise money for a local

children’s hospital.

Deliver a basket of

small gifts to a child

who is ill. Help out in

the pediatric ward of a

local hospital: put on a

puppet show, collect

and donate books, play

cards, board games, puzzles, read your favorite book, tape children’s books and donate them, hold

and rock babies, gather gifts and party supplies for children in a domestic abuse shelter. Become a

mentor. Donate school supplies.

People with disabilities. Create cards. Assist in a group home for the disabled. Help out with

everyday tasks or special events. Make a quilt or blanket. Provide small gifts, holiday surprises or

baked goods to a family using hospice services. Run errands, collect the mail, deliver hot soup or

homemade cookies, and stop by for a visit. Do whatever it takes to make a difference.

Hunger. Unload, pack food bags, sort, shelve, and distribute donated food at a local food bank.

Page 7: Contact Information Staff › UserFiles › Servers › Server... · Contact Information 1400 Tanyard Road, Sewell, NJ 08080 Gloucester County College, Instructional Center, Room

Organize a neighborhood food drive. Ask all guests at a holiday party to bring items for food banks.

Match sponsor families with needy families in rural areas of the United States. The sponsor family

sends a box of food, clothing and other needed items once a month. Assemble birthday bags to

donate to your local food pantry.

Poverty. Contact a homeless shelter.

How can you help families residing

there? Take children on field trips.

Help a homeless family that has just

found housing. Assist with parties,

games, and special events.

Caring for the Environment. Plant and tend a

vegetable garden. Celebrate Earth Day in April. Create

a butterfly garden for a school or nonprofit

organization. Clean-up a playground or park.

Caring for Animals. Donate supplies to an animal

shelter. Take dogs in an animal shelter for a walk. Be a

foster family to a pet awaiting adoption. Volunteer at a

zoo or aquarium. Sponsor an animal at a local zoo.

Other Ways to Give Back

Walk-a-thons. Walk-a-thons raise millions of dollars

for charities. Great for active people. A day out in the

fresh air. Gather friends or co-workers and form a

team. Name your team and set a fundraising goal.

Volunteers are also needed to help make it happen!

Donate. Ask most nonprofit organizations what their most pressing problem is and they will answer not

enough resources to accomplish their goals. Resources can mean many things, but most often it is

money. Consider donating money to a favorite charity, participating in a fund raising event, or

organizing your own fundraiser.

one-day project, a volunteer fair, or a long-term, sustainable EVP (Employee Volunteer Program), we will

work with you to create a successful program that will match your mission and make a lasting impact in
