    Peace in An Unsettling Time

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your

heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27, KJV). –Jesus

Pandemic, and the various responses to it from the federal level all the way down to the local level has brought untold stress, panic, shutdown, and unrest all over our country since February. The violent, merciless killing of a black man in Minneapolis, MN by a rogue police officer ignited a powder keg of outrage and violence that has rocked our country from coast to coast. On top of that, we are heading into a very controversial election cycle where the people of the United States are more divided than any time in our history except maybe the Civil War era.

All of us have wondered at times these last few months about our future and the future of our children and grandchildren. Is our great republic reaching an end? Is the world coming to an end? Are the prophecies of apocalypse and Armageddon described in the book of Revelation now upon us? Not just a few people have asked me these questions recently. Let’s face it, we are all shaken and unsettled these days.

Jesus spoke the words quoted above on the day we now call Maundy Thursday. He had informed the twelve that He would soon be arrested, killed, that He would soon leave them, and they would not be able to follow Him in the same manner they had before. Jesus then shocked the disciples with the news that one of them, one of the twelve, was about to betray Him. This was a very troubling time indeed for Jesus’ disciples. What would His apparent loss mean for them? There were undoubtedly feelings of anxiety and despair that filled their hearts. They previously had such high hopes that Jesus would usher in the Messianic Era of peace on earth, good will to all. Now those high hopes were replaced with deep apprehension.

The peace Jesus talked about is an inward joy and confidence that no matter what happens to me here on earth it will be well with my soul. It’s the confidence Martin Luther expressed in the middle of the Reformation when he was branded an outlaw and heretic, and with such a title over his head anyone who successfully murdered him would be considered a hero of the Pope and the Holy Roman Empire of the day. In response to this Luther penned the following verse in his great Reformation hymn: “If they take our house, goods, fame, child, or spouse, wrench our life away, they cannot win the day. The Kingdom’s ours forever!” (A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, Lutheran Book of Worship, hymn #228, verse 4).

With Jesus reigning in our hearts as risen Lord, no matter what the present or future bring, we know through Him, “we are more than conquerors…” (Romans 8:37). We know, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28, NKJV). Keep the faith dear brothers and sisters. The best is yet to come because we are loved with an everlasting love that flows from our Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

God’s sweet Peace be with you,

    Pastor Kurt Luebkeman

Youth Director Update September holds a lot of exciting things. Rally Day and CCYG are about to kick off!

Check out those details on the following pages. For now, I thought I would share a famous story I heard years ago. Blessings, Jen

A Parable About the Life-Saving Station

On a dangerous seacoast where shipwrecks often occur there was once a rundown little life-saving station.

The building was just a hut and there was only one boat, but the few devoted members kept a constant

watch over the sea, and with no thought for themselves, they went out day or night tirelessly searching for

the lost. Many of those who were saved by this wonderful little station decided they wanted to stay and

help the cause. They gave of their time and money and effort for the support of its work. New boats were

bought, and new crews were trained. For a while, the little life-saving station grew.

The members built bigger buildings to hold everyone. They even put lights outside so if everyone were

out on a mission, those who were not being saved could find their own way. These lights worked so well

that many members hard a time seeing the need to actually go to sea on life-saving missions so they

shifted their focus to those who were able to find their own way into the building. As less and less people

went out on life-saving missions, less and less people made it into the building. With time, the life-saving

station became mostly a popular gathering place for its members. They redecorated it beautifully as a sort

of club. They replaced the emergency cots with beds and put in comfier furniture. They grew to love their

beautiful station and spent all their time having fun together in it.

About this time a large ship was wrecked off the coast. Boat loads of cold, wet and half-drowned people

found their way onshore to the station. They were dirty and sick and some even spoke a strange

language. As the people entered the life-saving station, they put their stuff in places it didn’t belong. They

were loud and took over all the best rooms. Some members felt it wasn’t right.

The members decided to call an emergency meeting to figure out what should be done with all these

outsiders. A few spoke up and insisted that life-saving was their primary purpose and pointed out that

they were still called a “life-saving station”. Many members agreed. Yet some felt the outsiders were

being unpleasant and a hindrance to the normal pattern of the club. By the end of the meeting, all agreed

that they felt sad for the shipwrecked. So, they decided to allow the outsiders to stay as long as they were

willing to wear clean clothes that matched the members and do things the way the members do them.

Some outsiders stayed and found ways to blend in, some left. The members were content with the

outcome so the new rules for the club remained.

As time went on, a few people managed to find their own way in, but didn’t feel comfortable with the

different clothes and routine, so they left. Members became so busy inside the building enjoying each

other’s company that they didn’t notice when their outside lights burned out. As a result, those who were

shipwrecked could no longer find the station on their own and the station was eventually abandoned. If

you visit that seacoast today you will find that shipwrecks are still frequent in those waters, but with the

life-saving station deserted, most of the people drown.

Dear Parents, I am excited to help your kids safely connect with God and other kids… in person! Here are some of the efforts we are making to be sure Sunday School is a safe experience for your kids.

    • • Meeting Outside: we will be meeting outdoors as much as possible.

    • • Secure Check In: Required check in and check out of all students. See more below.

    • • Physical Distancing: Outdoor class will include carpet squares to help children stay distanced. Indoor classes will be rearranged to allow extra spacing between students.

    • Smaller Class Sizes: We have added another classroom to reduce class sizes. o New class age groups: PK, K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8

    • Masks: as mandated by the Governor, we will be wearing masks. We are providing all students and leaders with a special St Paul Kids/Youth mask!

    • Hand Sanitizer: Everyone will be given hand sanitizer when both entering and exiting class.

    • Lessons: We have restructured our crafts and supplies to allow each child to have their own supply bag eliminating any sharing of crayons, scissors, glue, markers and so on.

High School Students: You may have noticed we do not have a high school age group listed for Sunday school. Instead, we want to help our students move from being consumers to being invested in the life of the church. Students will be using the Sunday school hour to serve in some capacity. This includes teaching/helping in the children’s classes, working in the kitchen with hospitality, sanitizing, and so on. If your child needs help finding a way to serve, or you are part of a ministry that would like a student’s involvement, let me know. Check In/Out: Being outdoors is great but the lack of walls and a door could make it easy for your child to leave class without you. Using a check in/out system will help us keep track of when kids are coming and going from the class area. When you check your child in you will get matching name tags. One goes on your child and one goes along with you. We will only release your child from class to the person who has their matching name tag. Please help your child understand that even if they see you across the church lawn, they need to wait to leave until you give us their name tag. Remote: We are aware that moving Sunday school to be remote is a possibility. To keep things simple and as consistent as possible, we will follow the lead of the Clyde Green Springs school district. If they move to online school for a week, we will provide an online video lesson for your child via a parent’s email address. If the schools go remote long term, we will use a version of our Sunday School in a Bag ministry. We will do our best to keep you informed as things unfold. Your child’s well-being is our primary concern. Please contact me if you have any questions.

    Thanks, Jen Rawson Youth Director

School is tricky right now. Parents are working full time jobs and trying to be their child’s teacher

too! It feels impossible at times.

If you have a few extra minutes a week, we need your help. We want to pair you up with a

student who needs a little extra guidance and encouragement. Things you may consider doing

include prayer, mail a card, give homework reminders, a quick call to see how a test went, note
