RUSSIAN HELICOPTER EXHIBITIONMAJOR EVENT

In order to mark the opening of the mainannual event of the Russian helicoptercommunity on May 21 the helicopter ofthe Russian Federal Security Service Ка–226 carried the biggest flag of the RussianFederation, with the surface area of over1,500sq.m. At 1 pm Ка–226 made threecircles around Crocus Expo and conti-nued its flight along Moscow Ring Road.At 1:30 pm the helicopter came back toCrocus Expo and made another circle ofthe exhibition centre commemoratingthe opening of HeliRussia 2009.

The participants, organizers and guests ofthe exhibition received letters of congra-tulations and telegrams from PresidentMedvedev and Vladislav Putilin, the FirstDeputy Chairman of the Military and In-dustrial Commission under the Govern-ment of the Russian Federation.

The welcoming speech of President Med-vedev was read at the opening ceremonyby Leonid Reyman, advisor to the Presi-dent of the Russian Federation and Presi-dent of the Russian Helicopter Federation.

The following officials took part in the formalexhibition opening ceremony at 12 pm onMay 21, 2009 in Pavilion No 1 of the Crocus

Expo Exhibition Centre:• Mr. Leonid Reyman, Advisor to the Pre-sident of the Russian Federation,

• Mr. Denis Manturov, Deputy Minister ofIndustry and Trade of the Russian Federa-tion, • Mr. Vladimir Popovkin, Deputy Chief ofArmaments of the Armed Forces of theRussian Federation, Deputy Minister ofDefence of the Russian Federation, • Mr. Andrey Reus, CEO of OPK Oboron-prom,• Mr. Mikhail Kazachkov, Chairman of theBoard of the Helicopter Industry Associa-tion, • And other officials.

also increase it. The Helicopters of Russiaholding company works a lot on civil andmilitary helicopters, said Mr. Reus. He as-sured the participants that the domestichelicopter manufacturers will be able tocomplete the tasks they are facing.

Over a hundred of Russian companies(both members of OJSC Helicopters ofRussia and independent manufacturersand operators from the regions) presenteda large scope of expositions. Samples ofmilitary products were also demonstrated

at the exhibition showing the spectrum ofnational achievements in this field. Themost striking example of defence productswas the military helicopter Ка–52 Alligator, which was exhibited before the publicoutside of Crocus Expo Pavilion No.1.

The helicopter holding company OJSCHelicopters of Russia was in the centre ofthe Russian exposition. It presented itsdevelopments in cooperation with theUral Optical Mechanics Plant named afterYalamov and CJSC Transas. The exhibitionstand of OJSC Helicopters of Russia rannon stop presentations of Russian helico-pters, which gathered big audiences.

Russian helicopter manufacturers also de-monstrated brand new developments. Forexample, KB Maslova–Sever, LLC showedtheir new product – helicopter RU MAS

133. This is a light three-seat single-enginehelicopter – a modernized version of theAmerican helicopter with a reciprocatingengine. This helicopter is only an interimstage on the way of creating a new twin-engine RU MAS 245, a kind of a flying labo-ratory for refinement and diagnostics ofthe company’s own developments, whichwere also presented at HeliRussia 2009.

New agricultural equipment HeliPod IIISpray System used on board of helicopterR 44 for irrigation and pollination of agri-

cultural land was presented at the exhibi-tion. Its effectiveness is obvious – onehelicopter substitutes 20 agriculturalmachines. This equipment was presentedby Russian Helicopter Systems.

Over 30 foreign helicopter companiestook part in HeliRussia 2009. The list inclu-ded such leaders of the world helicoptermarket as Eurocopter, Bell Helicopter, MDHelicopters, Turbomeca, Becker Avionics,Pall Corporation, Breeze-Eastern, Honey-well Aerospace, Kamatics, Simplex Manu-facturing, Semia and others.

Becker Avionics, Systems Simplex Manu-facturing and Breeze-Eastern not onlypresented their products at the exhibitionstands but also held presentations in theconference halls of the Crocus Expo Exhi-bition Centre. Japanese Gen Corporation

made a video presentation of its in-housedevelopment – the smallest helicopter inthe world, unofficially called a “flyingseat”. Another Japanese company, АlphaAviation Co., presented a device for con-venient hauling of helicopter R 44, whichcaused a lot of interest among the ownersof these light helicopters.

The exhibition was visited by the represen-tatives of INTERNATIONAL HELICOPTERSAFETY TEAM, and its Program DirectorMark Liptak made a presentation at one of

the conferences. The Helicopter Associa-tion International (HAI) has become a tra-ditional participant of HeliRussia. This yearits delegation not only organised an exhi-bition stand but also participated in the in-ternational conference Helicopter Market:Reality and Perspectives.

Ambassadors and military attachés ofBangladesh, Bolivia, Egypt, Korea, Thai-land, Peru, Libya, India, Indonesia, Ger-many, Israel, Canada and other countriesexpressed their interest in the exhibition.

A big business programme was part of theexhibition. One of the key events was In-ternational Conference Helicopter Market:Reality and Perspectives, organized by He-licopter Industry Association with the sup-port of AviaPort Agency. The conferencetouched upon the parameters of the Rus-

sian Helicopters, which was interesting bothfor Russian and foreign operators.

The round table Usage of Liquefied Pro-pane and Butane – Aircraft Condensed Fuelat Mi-8 Helicopters was dedicated to Mi-8helicopters. The round table was organizedby Federal State Unitary Enterprise StateScientific Research Institute of Civil Avia-tion, Federal State Unitary Enterprise Cent-ral Aerohydrodynamic Institute namedafter Professor N.E.Zhukovsky, and OJSC In-terAviaGaz. The usage of a new fuel typethat helps to reduce helicopter operationcosts is especially important during finan-cial crisis; therefore the topic caused somuch interest – representatives of 39 orga-nisations participated in the round table.

Reduction of costs, optimization of businessprocesses and work performance improve-ment seem to be the most vital tasks formanufacturers of helicopters and compo-

nents as of today. One of the most powerfuland effective instruments for solving thesetasks is the world-wide acknowledged met-hodology of lean production (Lean Produc-tion, Lean, Kaizen, Toyota ProductionSystem). Almost all the world industry lea-ders – Boeing, Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation,Bell Helicopter Textron and others – buildtheir production systems on the basis ofLean Production. As part of the businessagenda of HeliRussia 2009, Centre Orgpromconducted a presentation seminar Lean He-licopter Manufacturing: Leadership Poten-tial, where it explained the philosophy andmethodology of Lean Production using theexamples of foreign and Russian companiesand presented instruments that help to ac-hieve quick and effective results.

Seminar named Program and Project Ma-nagement: Industry, Objectives, Imple-mentation Methods organized by РМExpert was dedicated to the optimizationof corporate management methods.

It was allowed to demonstrate military pro-ducts at the exhibition; and for this targetgroup the Military Academy of the CentralCommand of Armed Forces and the Mili-tary and Scientific Committee of the Mili-tary Aviation Forces conducted the roundtable “Development of the State HelicopterAviation: Problems and their Solutions”.

Traditionally, at the Second InternationalHelicopter Industry Exhibition HeliRussia2009 the Helicopter Industry Associationconducted an annual prize award cere-mony in three nominations: Pilot of theYear, Designer of the Year, and Engineer ofthe Year. The ceremony took place on May22 at 4 pm at the Exposition Pavilion. ThePresidium of the Helicopter Industry Asso-ciation selected the following winners: in

sian helicopter market from the point ofview of consumers and helicopter produ-cers. The presentations included: reporton the forecast of the world helicoptermarket by Honeywell Aerospaсe (MarketAnalysis Director Charles Park), report onthe American helicopter market by Heli-copter Association International (Vice-Pre-sident Edward DiCampli), report on theRussian helicopter market (Chairman ofthe Helicopter Industry Association BoardMikhail Kazachkov), report on the deve-lopment prospects of the biggest Russianhelicopter operators Aviation CompanyUTAir. The conference was held on the firstday of the exhibition and caused a broadresonance among the Russian helicoptermarket participants.

Thus, already now one can come to a he-licopter exhibition in a helicopter and forthat one does not need to own a helico-pter or use the company one – one canuse the helicopter taxi services. We didnot see anything like this last year. Whatwill happen next year?

The next, third International HelicopterIndustry Exhibition HeliRussia 2010 willalso be held in Crocus Expo InternationalExhibition Centre on May 20-22, 2010.

We are confident that it will be even moreinteresting and diversified.

KA-32A11BC PRESENTATION

THE KA–32 HELICOPTER

YESTERDAY, TO-DAY AND TO-MORROW

In 1998 the Canadian Type Certificatewas issued to the Ka-32A11BC helicopterunder the USA’s FAR29 requirements andsubsequently national Type Certificates ofChile, Mexico, Japan, China, South Korea, and other countries followed. The Ka-32is the only Russian helicopter that has ob-tained Certificates under the USA’s andEuropean Airworthiness Regulations. Andit is not just the clearance for helicoptersoperation that the certification ensures;but it also enables the promotion of heli-copters in the world market. The fact ofcertification proves the acknowledge-ment of the Russian certification system,

its regulation basis, and helicopters andengines production quality assurance sy-stem.

The Ka-32 helicopter is used extensi-vely both in Russia and outside the co-untry and it takes a leading position in itscategory regarding the most importantparameters: payload capacity, maneuve-rability and controllability.

Inherently, a helicopter is a double-use aircraft. The Ka-32 developed on thebasis of the Ka-27 combat helicopterpresents a vivid evidence of the case. Ithas inherited unique performance ofthe combat helicopter: it can be based

On September 28, 2009 theEuropean Aviation SafetyAgency (EASA) issued TypeCertificate to the Ka-32A11BCmultirole all-weather helicop-ter for flying in the EuropeanUnion countries’ air space.EASA.IM.R133 Type Certificatepermits any operator of theEuropean Union to use theRussian helicopter for com-mercial purposes.

on ships and perform landings andtake-offs from limit-size pads, also underconditions of high pitching and rollingof the ship.

Small dimensions of the helicopter, itsability of ditching using floats, night andall-weather flight capabilities, and resi-stance to corrosive environment of thesea are only some of the merits inheritedby this helicopter from its ancestors.

The Ka-32 helicopter modified fromthe Ka-27 performed its maiden flight on11 January, 1980. It was flown by the test-pilot N.P. Bezdetnov. And already in Feb-ruary and March of the same year thehelicopter made its successful “start” onthe “Sibir” nuclear-powered ice-breakertaking part in the pole expedition thro-ugh the Barents and the Kara seas.

In 1990 the first flight of the Ka-32Amultirole all-weather helicopter tookplace. It was the first Russian helicopterwhich obtained the homeland airwort-hiness certificate. To carry out the certi-fication of this helicopter, the AviationRegister of the Interstate Aviation Com-mittee (IAC AR) and Kamov Companydeveloped special Airworthiness Regu-lations 32.29 (helicopter) and 32.29 (en-gine) which took into account both theUSA’s FAR-29 and FAR-33 Regulations re-quirements and the requirements of theRussian NLGV-2 Regulations. The specificapproach that had been chosen provedto be quite correct later by applicationfor certification abroad.

The on-board equipment and sy-stems of the Ka-32A helicopter have un-dergone considerable upgrade resultedin significant enhancement of the heli-copter performance that ensures its ope-ration from ship decks, off-shore rigpads, and from unequipped sites. Thespectrum of the Ka-32A intended use isvery wide: transportation of people andcargoes in the transport compartmentand of bulky cargoes on the externalload sling system, construction and erec-tion, search and rescue and emergencyrescue operations, evacuation of pati-ents and casualties, pilots training andothers. To a considerable extent, success-ful completion of these operations is ac-hieved due to easy piloting techniquespeculiar to a co-axial rotor scheme heli-copter. The Ka-32 boasts the best safetyperformance by maneuvering close toobstacles. This is particularly importantin rescue operations conducted underextreme conditions when the power unithas no reserve power.

Due to a high power-to-weight ratioa co-axial rotor scheme helicopter has

the highest hovering ceiling and verticalclimb performance if compared to otherrotorcraft. This performance is the maincomponent of the helicopter maneuve-rability and particularly in high/hot con-ditions.

The experience of the Ka-32 helico-pters operation has proved not onlytheir remarkable flight performance butalso a high reliability of the helicopters’hardware. For example, the total num-ber of flight hours of three Ka-32A11BChelicopters operation in Canada duringthe ten-year period amounts to 45,000.And it was for the first time in the natio-nal practice when the helicopters werenot AOG for overhaul as scheduled re-pairs substituted for overhaul repairs. The Company is planning to use thispractice by the operation of all the Ka-32 helicopters.

Over 160 aircraft of different modifi-cations were built of which more than 80were exported to Canada, Switzerland,

Spain, Portugal, Chile, Mexico, Malaysia,Japan and other countries. The fleet ofthe Ka-32 helicopters in the South Koreais over 60 units. They are operated su-ccessfully by the Forestry Aviation, by theNavy, and in fire fighting operations.

The Ka-32 helicopters are in batchproduction at Kumertau Aviation Produc-tion Enterprise JSC (as well as KamovCompany, it is an associated company ofthe Russian helicopter holding under thecontrol of the ‘Russian Helicopters’ JSCthat is affiliated to the ‘Oboronprom’Joint Industrial Corporation).

It is the interests of operators thatKamov Company puts on the top in itshelicopter design and development acti-vities. In response to operators’ requeststhe Company is planning to upgrade theKa-32 helicopter in order to increase itspayload capacity up to 7 tons that will ex-pand the range of the helicopter opera-tion missions and make its flying morecomfortable.

OVERHAUL-PERIOD RENEWALTECHNOLOGY

If somebody had told me some timeago about Mi-26 trials in Riga I wouldhave been very much surprised: whyLatvia? Considering the notorious foreignpolicy changes, such a fact is conceivedas nonsense. And nevertheless, the Mi-26helicopters have belonged to the worldfor a long time, so the extension of thelifecycle limits of these rotary-wing giantsis not only Russian technicians’ and de-signers’ concern. As for complexity, scope, depth and multiplicity of factors, such re-search in the helicopter world is definitelybeyond comparison. It is noteworthy that“our Latvians” take a very active part inthis process. Indeed, the political map canchange its color when it comes to realvalue.

It’s common knowledge that helicop-ters’ life and death depend on authentic-ity and timeliness of tests. The moreaccurate the information is, the more cor-rect the forecast of the program “life”prospects will be.

Technical longevity is determined bythe ability to expertly manage fleet con-

dition which is impossible without scien-tifically grounded data received in thecourse of tests. And helicopters are no ex-ception either.

The Mi-26, a heavy transport helicop-ter, was designed for military purposes, hence its modest

flying life and issues concerning ma-terial selection and primary structure pro-duction. As a consequence, when theMi-26 made in Russian aviation plantshad expired their lifetime limits and fuse-lage cracks turned up, tests became an ur-gent issue. Where and how could that bedone? So we had to seriously considergoing abroad, to the country that had re-cently joined the NATO but where our for-mer test facilities were not only preservedbut also updated.

Looking Back

Long ago, in 1960, Riga laboratorieswere created in the State Research andDevelopment Institute at the Civil AirFleet. From the very beginning one of

their key activities was aviation materialand construction reliability research. It allbegan with testing the Soviet civil avia-tion flagman, Tupolev Tu-104, then camethe Ilyushin Il-18. Starting with the Mi-1and Mi-4 entry into service there ap-peared an acute need in research of over-haul period extension for helicopter units.Quite soon a bench base was created notonly for first helicopters but for the Mi-2and Mi-8, advanced at that time.

The crisis of the civil aviation appliedscience after 1991 and the total cut offunding did not escape the Latvian labo-ratory. But Aviatest (the center’s newname) staff managed to maintain bothbench equipment providing for goodquality of tests and the staff able to solvethe most complicated issues.

In August 1998, when Aviatest exis-tence was at risk, its partners and friendsdid their best to help the unique test sub-division survive. Scientific research wenton. Aviatest was accredited according to

helicopter industry magazine/ special edition, 2010

To Latvia. For Test

the European standard LVS ЕN ISO/IEC17025. The accreditation allowed Aviatestto carry out and support tests on a com-pletely new level. The center was in-cluded into a joint European integratedproject NICE-TRIP for the new generationrotary-wing aircraft development andtest together with AgustaWestland andEurocopter, European helicopter industryleaders.

Tyumen, Siberia – Riga Special Trip

Let’s go back to 2003, when most ofthe Mi-26 fleet came to service life limitand the aircraft operation could havebeen stopped but for the State Researchand Development Establishment at CivilAir Fleet which took a decision to carryout tests for overhaul-period renewal. TheMi-26 with a renewed overhaul-periodwas in great demand but nobody wasready to provide an aircraft for tests. Asuitable helicopter was found in Tyumen,Siberia. It had to be assembled, broughtto flying condition, taken to Latvia and

11www.helicopter.su

landed in the center of the capital of anot-so-friendly independent state. Land-ing site: an industrial area, buildingscrowding inside it, a tiny site surroundedby trees that were eventually sawn down.Local authorities gave permission for theperiod from Saturday to Monday. Badweather reduced the gap to two hours. Ahuge helicopter flew over the city, hov-ered over a small bandbox and startedlanding. Hardly had it touched theground when the sky turned black and itstarted snowing. The local press and com-munity became aware only the next dayand attacked the Latvian Ministry of De-fense when the giant was already inplace.

Though the activity algorithm wasrather standard, it took two years to de-velop the test bench and another half-year for helicopter setting and loadingdiagram refinement. Special dynamichydro cylinders with 500 and 1000 mmstroke were developed and produced forthe aircraft tests. Long life and low frictionrate allowed long-term high frequencytests. On September 11, 2006 the bench

started to work. All together 10 080“flights” have been carried out! The weak-est points were to be examined. In case ofthe Mi-26 it was the tail boom and the an-titorque rotor pylon splice. Several vari-ants of update were proposed, the mostefficient one was selected and the tailboom adjustment was done. Rostvertolrepresentatives fitted two new bulk-heads. Further strain measurement con-firmed efficiency of the update. Sincethen tests could be realized under a morerigid program. 200 000 cycles were sched-uled, 20 000 per month. At the momentthe laboratory has already confirmed thatthe helicopter life cycle is 4200 hours. Inthe future 14 000 hours seems real!

Rotary-wing giants will keep on flyingstill for the benefit of humans thanks toour ex-fellow citizens devoted to helicop-ter business. On October 25, 2009. Aviat-est marked 6 years since the start ofintegrity tests of the aircraft. It bears re-peating a forgotten truth: no tests, no hel-icopters.

KEY PLAYERWORLD MARKET

"It's an immense pleasure to see theEC175 soaring through the skies," de-clared Eurocopter CEO Lutz Bertling."This helicopter was developed in closecooperation with our customers to en-sure it would be perfectly suited to theirneeds—particularly in terms of safetyand comfort. This is the product every-one's been waiting for on the civil mar-ket. I would like to congratulate andthank our colleagues from China, all ourpersonnel who invested so much timeand effort in this project, and, of course, our industrial partners. Their combinedefforts have made it possible for theEC175 to perform its maiden flight righton schedule, that’s to say exactly four

years after the program was launched, which is a real technological wizardry. "

The new generation EC175 has a multi-role design and can carry out a widescope of civil missions. It slots perfectlyinto the Eurocopter range between theAS365 Dauphin (4/5 metric tons) and theAS332/EC225 Super Puma (9/11 metrictons) families. It benefits from a mix ofproven and advanced technologies, making it a very performing and reliablehelicopter. Depending on its configura-tion, it can hold up to 16 passengers. Atotal of 114 EC175s have already beenordered by 14 different customers. Cer-tification of the EC175 by the European

Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is slatedfor 2011, and the first deliveries arescheduled to follow in 2012. Eurocopterexpects to sell 800 EC175s over the nexttwenty years, creating nearly 2000 newdirect and indirect jobs.

CooperationThe EC175 program was launched on De-cember 5, 2005. The development and industrializationwork has been equally split between Eu-rocopter and AVIC according to the spe-cialties of each company. Two differenthelicopters will result from the commonplatform: The EC175 manufactured, soldand maintained by Eurocopter in Marig-nane and the Z15, manufactured, soldand maintained by the AVIC Group.

MissionsThe EC175 is a medium-lift twin-enginehelicopter that can perform many differ-ent civil missions. Initially designed forthe oil & gas industry to carry workteams to the platforms, it meets thestrictest safety and availability require-ments that have become a must for op-erators in the industry.

The helicopter is also being developedfor missions such as search and rescueand emergency medical transport, andcan also meet the needs of the commer-cial aviation industry for VIP and corpo-rate transport.

Technical characteristicsThe EC175 benefits from the most cut-ting-edge technology available. It is

powered by twin Pratt & Whitney PT6C-67E engines with dual-channel new gen-eration Full Authority Digital EngineControls (FADEC). With its completelynew avionics, the EC175 has an effectiveand easy-to-use man machine interface, which considerably reduces the pilotworkload. Both the pilot and co-pilot cantherefore concentrate more fully ontheir missions. The EC175 is indeedequipped with a full screen cockpit anda digital four-axis Automatic Flight Con-trol System (AFCS) that outperforms anyother automatic pilot system on themarket. It also has a five-blade Spheriflexmain rotor and an airframe that com-plies with the most stringent certifica-tion requirements.

The EC175 offers the widest cabin of anyhelicopter in its category, which pro-vides an unmatched level of comfort. The aircraft can be boarded easily usingthe wide sliding doors on either side ofthe fuselage and the immense baggagecompartment is also accessible fromboth sides of the helicopter. All verylarge windows offer a great visibility andcan be jettisoned so that passengers andcrew can quickly exit the helicopter inthe event of an emergency.

The EC175 has also been designed to re-duce vibration levels to a minimum; its

Нelicopters are machines that are worththe effort. And let us not forget that histori-cally our association is part of a military in-dustrial complex. Worldwide it is a greatbusiness advantage. This is on one hand. Onthe other hand, even those helicopters thatare meant exclusively for military purposesare a kind of bridge to some important civilprojects. All the more, now this is “numberone” topic in aviation. That is why we wereso eager to recover helicopter production.Primarily it concerns the machines thathave already been assimilated at the plant- Ka-50, for which we had a technologicalbackup. Developing this project further weplanned to switch to Ka-52 “Alligator”, a two-seated modification of “Black Shark”. Certa-inly it required profound preparatory workof the company’s staff. The main thing isthat the “Oboronprom” company beganconsolidation of the companies within theindustry. We immediately perceived thesupport of this company and that of “Roso-boronexport” too.

What kind of assistance was it?

It was bringing us to participate in ex-port programs: we performed a missilecontract. Also it was funding under a statemissile order.

Please tell us about the Mi-34 heli-copter production prospects.

Such a project exists. It represents a se-parate light aviation production complex

including also a sport and pilot Yak-54. I cansay with confidence that now there are noproblems with the Mi-34 helicopter pro-duction at “Progress”. There are people, there are technologies. Certainly there aresome issues concerning production effici-ency, production management efficiencyand technological processes efficiency. Butthere is a program aimed at the reorgani-zation of our production line. We are goingto substitute mechanical processing equip-ment with more up-to-date processingcenters and create production in the formof a unique continuous technologicalchain. We are going to implement new IT-based production planning. Accordinglywe will need a different level of staff quali-fication – from managers to workmen.

These are general program itemsand how about real steps towards lighthelicopter production implementation?

Surely there are exact tasks connectedwith internal production issues. We have adefinite Mi-34 program developed by “Rus-sian Helicopters”. And the first step thereis component production revival on alliedplants. And as soon as these companies areready we will start Mi-34 production in fullconformity with requirements for helico-pters of this class. Here, as I have alreadymentioned, technological difficulties mayarise. Because some units have fallen out ofthis chain. And we will need some promptmeasures to be taken for complete cycle re-construction. There is a managing company

In what way is the “Progress”aviation company going to

basis of this we can refine our productionand train our staff according to its needs.Staff training is one of the crucial tasksthat the company sets itself. The situationin Arsenyev is rather typical: the companyis city forming and its activity affects thestandards of living and the social level alot. No trained specialists – nobody to ma-intain this level. In Arsenyev there wasand there still is an aviation college. Onthe basis of the Arsenyev technical voca-tional school we plan to create a resourcecenter for all machine-building industryof the Primorie Territory. This is inspiredby the Union of Mechanical engineers. Wealso train technical staff in this city on thebasis of the Far East State Technical Uni-versity. With our support this institutionhas already acquired a license for aircraftand helicopter industry engineering stafftraining. Around 100 specialists are beingtrained now. We also have an up-to-dateprogram with Komsomolsk-na-AmureUniversity. Composite material specialistsare trained in the Moscow Aviation Tech-nological Institute named after K.E. Tsiol-kovsky. On the whole staff trainingprogram is well underway and as soon asproduction unrolls we will not remain wit-hout specialists.

working on it that unites the whole helico-pter holding. As for the design-engineeringdepartment, we are interacting with it usingmodern digital technologies. That regardsrequirements to the newest equipmentthat we are installing and besides mold loftmethod specialists are very few.

And what about staff (engineers,technologists)?

It’s very important that the fundingissue is being solved by way of participa-tion in federal target-oriented programsand regional/local programs. So on the

Sergey PARSHENTSEV, I class FlightTest Engineer:- All the members of our flight crew areexperienced and qualified people. Thecommander has thirty-seven years offlight work and eleven thousand flyinghours. He has piloted five types of heli-copters. This year our crew has been mentionedfor participation in a rescue operation. Weevacuated people from areas flooded byKuban spate. The commander wasawarded Medal for Courage and othercrew members – medal for People Rescuefor this operation. Now we are performing constructionworks to install high-voltage power trans-mission towers 220. The line route startsin Tuapse and ends in Krasnaya Polyana. This transmission line will supply powerto all Olympic sports facilities, which areplanned for construction here.

Increase in orders for helicopters to support Olympic projects

Krasnaya Polyana is a well-known reserve of the Northern Caucasus, which enjoysgreat popularity among tourists and sportsmen. This resort with lavish naturewill play a special role in Winter Olympics 2014. Nowadays construction of new sports facilities is at full tilt, infrastructure for theOlympics is being created in Krasnaya Polyana. “The preparation is going on inthe right direction,”- noticed Jean-Claude Killy, Chairman of the InternationalOlympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission for Sochi 2014, who visitedKrasnaya Polyana at the end of April. “I am sure that when sportsmen from allover the world come to Sochi in 2014 they will be dazed at beauty and quality offacilities, which will be used for competitions. I am sure that visitors and massmedia will be also pleasantly surprised,” – mentioned Committee Chairman.Even now there are surprising things in Krasnaya Polyana. Recently Mi-26T, agiant helicopter, has appeared there to install power transmission towers in themountains. This challenge is taken up by specialists of Research - And - Produc-tion Complex PANH OJSC from Krasnodar. Our correspondent aboard the helicopter watched the crew of the helicopter andSergey AGROV, I class Test Pilot. Our correspondent managed to ask a few ques-tions to the participants of the unique operation.

work. Today Sergey Parshentsev is per-forming the operator’s duties. He directsme to the load and gives all necessary com-mands: “A meter to the left!”, “A meter to theright!”, “Think forward!”, “Think backward!”Such specific commands are used for con-struction works. Accuracy of commander’sfollowing operator’s directions is extremelyimportant for the time spent and challengeresult. Installation of a transmission line re-quires operators watching the left and theright semispheres and the tail. All the heli-copter team – seven people – is involved inwork. And a ground support team to addto this. That’s our collective works for theOlympics, so to speak.

Sergey PARSHENTSEV: - The topography is very composite. Wehave to make of external load slingslonger, which creates additional difficul-ties as the amplitude of vibration in-creases and it is difficult to quench it. Now we use an azimuth orientation sys-tem – experimental technique developedby our company. This system is based on

using a bilateral suspender with a two-point load fastening. The load may be sta-bilized and moved with on-board LPG-300hoists. The load may be turned in azimuthin plane parallel to the main rotor plane. When the helicopter approaches an erec-tion joint, the load is orientated in the di-rection convenient for alignment oftechnological axes. The equipment, whichwe use, is not in mass production.

Sergey AGROV:- Now I’d like to say a few words aboutpeople who work on the ground. We havea team of ground support in the companyscience department. A head of flightswith a radio set is constantly present atthe stake. He determines wind directionand carries out communication with ahelicopter team and a customer. He is al-ways ready to help us in any contingencyevent. For example, if it is required to im-mediately release load because of the fireonboard or engine failure. We should al-ways keep in mind that there are peopleunder the helicopter…

… Having received a code signal, SergeyAnatolyevich stopped his speech: - Now,we are getting ready. Come on!– hurriedthe commander to the rotor plane. I fol-lowed him. The crew members were taking theirplaces. The ground team moved to a safedistance. The airborne auxiliary powerroared. The huge blades start theirsmooth movement gradually spinningup. The humming tumble and vibrationintensified. As if unwillingly, the huge ma-chine got off the ground blowing swarmsof dust and last year’s leaves. A powertransmission tower gradually rose to itsfull height. The full construction left theground. Higher and higher… The copterwith the load slowly changes its directionto straight level.A glorious view on the highlands openedfrom above. Snow-capped Aibga ridgesparkled dazzlingly. Splitting againststones and benches, Mzymta watersrushes to the sea. But the crew was tooabsorbed with its work to feast eyes onthe nature beauty. There was a stake under the helicopter.Operators put on safety harness. All com-munication facilities were switched on.Our flying crane maneuvered smoothlyobeying Sergey Agrov’s skilful manipula-tions. Well... It’s done! The constructionwas installed. The load was released. Drifting up. Levelflight. The task was performed! We re-turned to the same ground. After the flight

asked the crew commander to share hisopinion about the unusual rotor plane.

Sergey AGROV:- Mi-26T is a wonderful helicopter! It’snearly devoid of any shortcomings if youknow how to operate it. Upon the wholeit is very reliable. All the principal systemshave standbys. What am I worried aboutnow? Our successors. Who can I share myexperience with? This is the problem tobe solved. More young people should betrained for flights on such machines...

After visiting the Olympic constructionsites in Krasnaya Polyana Jean-ClaudeKilly, Chairman of the InternationalOlympic Committee (IOC) CoordinationCommission for Sochi 2014 emphasized:“Here (in Russia) there is a hot team, whichkeeps a check on this national project. Weexpect amazing and astonishing Olympicsin 2014. Taking into account everythingwe have seen this week, this team willmake the dream of Russian people andathletes of all over the world true”. Perhaps, it should be mentioned that allpeople involved in maintaining and op-erating Mi-26T in Krasnaya Polyana havethe right to consider themselves mem-bers of this team.

Mi-26 History Development of Mi-26 heavy transporthelicopter was started in Mil Design Officein the early 1970-s. The new machine wasintended to change the heavy Mi-6, whichhad been in use since the 1960-s. A new, more powerful helicopter was needed be-

cause of more challenging tasks assignedfor the countries’ helicopter fleet. It wasnecessary to develop a helicopter capableof transporting large-sized cargoes of 15-20 t at a distance of 500-800 km.The research done by the Moscow Heli-copter Plant together with the CentralAerohydrodynamic Institute and the Cen-tral Institute of Aviation Engine Buildingdetermined use of a classical single-rotordesign. The new generation heavy heli-copter was called Mi-26 (Product—90). Itsadvance project was approved by theMinistry of Aircraft Production ScientificAnd Technical Council in December 1971.D-136 engines were used as power unitsfor the helicopter. This engine model was

developed by the Zaporozhye EngineBuilding Design Office named Progress. The VR-26 main gear box was designedand built by Mil Plant. Specialists of Moscow Helicopter Plant didtheir best to take into account all experi-ence gained from operation and servicingof Mi-6, Mi-8 and Mi-12 (V-12) to designMi-26. The helicopter was equipped witha auxiliary power unit. Servicing personnelhas a convenient access all main units andsystems without any auxiliary equipment.Cargo handling equipment was modern-ized. The new helicopter was equippedwith a navigation set for flights at any timeof day in favourable and adverse weatherconditions.

The first Mi-26 flight was on the 14th ofDecember, 1977. It has been in serial production since1980.The Mi-26 helicopter was first demon-strated to wide audience in June 1981 inLe Burget Salon, France. More than 300 helicopters had been builtbefore 2008, 20 of them were exported to9 countries. One of the helicopter models – Mi-26T –was certified by the IAC aviation registertalking into account FAR-29 requirementsand was called Mi-26TS. The Mi-26 is the heaviest and most pow-erful helicopter in the world of all helicop-ters in serial production.
