Brief Industrial Profile of Sirmour District
1. General Characteristics of the District District Sirmaur is located in outer Himalayas which is commonly known as Shivalik range.This district is bounded by district Shimla in North Uttar Pradesh in East, Haryana in South and Distt. Solan in North-West. Like other parts of Himachal Pradesh , it has beautiful landscapes, bracing climate, big and small game and legendry temples which hold abiding attraction for the tourists. The river Giri is the biggest river in the district which originates from Kotkhai/Jubbal Tehsil of Shimla district and flows down in the south-east direction. It ultimately joins the river Yamuna near Paonta Sahib. Lot of tributaries join this river in its long course, most important of them being Jalal river which originates from Dharthi range near Pachhad and joins the Giri River at Dadahu from the right side. The river Giri is very useful as it a big source of livelihood fishermen in this district. Another important river which forms the eastern border of the Sirmour district is the river Tons. In this District, there are three Administrative Sub Divisions,six tehsils, four sub tehsils, six community development blocks, two municipal committees and one notified area committee. Out of 228 panchayats in this district, 26 are backward declared panchayats. Census villages are 984. The total number of patwar circle is 126. In this District there are one head post 15 sub post offices and 126 branch post offices. Commercial banks have 49 branches. The total number of Cooperative banks and Land dev. banks are 15 and 2 respectively. The total length of roads is 2146 kms.out of which 1605 kms is jeepable . The road density is 75.96 kms. per 100 sq. km. and 5.65 kms. per 1000 population. Presently,245 fair price shops are functioning in this district.
1.1 Location & Geographical Area.
Sirmour district lies in the outer Himalayan ranges commonly called as Shivaliks between 77°01’12” and 77°49’40” east longitude and 33°22’30” and 31°01’20” north latitude. The district is predominantly mountainous with deep valleys lying between ranges of varying elevations. Longest length from west to east is 77 kms. and the maximum width from north to south is 80 kms. The district is bounded by Shimla district in the north Uttarakhand in the east, Yamuna Nagar district of Haryana in the south and west and solan district in the north-west. The geographical area of the district is 2825 Sq. Km. which is almost 5.07% of the total geographical area of the state Area wise it is the fifth smallest district of the state after Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Una and Solan districts.

1.4 FOREST
Forest also plays an important role in the economy of the district. Forest occupies an area of 48344 hectares out of the total geographical area of 2,24,738 hectares. Major forest produce that comes from forests are in the form of timber, firewood, katha, resin, fodder, herbs etc.The district is having 48344 Hectare forest area.
1.5 Administrative set up.
Administratively the district has been divided into 6 tehsils viz. Rajgarh, Pachhad, Nahan, Renuka, Shillai and Paonta and 4 sub-tehsils viz. Dadahu Kamraoo, Pajhota and Nohra. For development purpose the district has been divided into 6 development blocks viz. Nahan, Paonta, Pachhad, Sangrah, Rajgarh and Shillai and 3 sub divisions namely Nahan, Paonta and Rajgarh. The district has 228 panchayats.

Two industrial Area have been set up i.e. Industrial Area, Gondpur (Paonta Sahib) and Industrial Area, Kala Amb. These two industrial areas is near to Chandigarh so there is good scope for setting up of MSMEs in the district. The prospective industries have been divided into three groups. Firstly, there are resource based industries. In this group of items have been suggested keeping in view the resources available in the district from sectors like agriculture, forest resources, horticulture resources and mineral. The second group pertains to the skill based industries. In this group few of the items based on traditional skills are identified. The third group pertains to the demand based products. In this group items identified has been further grouped into food and allied products, hosiery and textile products, leather and leather products, chemical and allied products, paper products, glass and ceramic products, mechanical products, electrical and electronics products and misc. products.

General issues raised by industry association during the course of meeting During the course of the meeting various industry association raised the issue as the district recently setup SWCA in Paonta Sahib & Kala Amb industrial area so there is need to build the infrastructure. The Industry association also facing the problem as this area does not have rail connectivity. Besides, the industry association demands for the setting up of container depot.
