We created programming focused on environmental sustainability and civic engagement that would inspire children, youth, and adults. The two day event kicked off with KIDSCRAWL—14 galleries and arts institutions opened their doors to over 800 students to offer special programming to Elementary and Middle School classes. The students previewed work by local and international visual artists. One particularly memorable project was City Voices, which was created by Aaron Hutchinson, Amy McIntosh & Andrew O’Connor at the Factory Media Centre. The ARTASIA project investigated the theme of city building through sound, video, and interactivity by displaying interviews of people in our community. ARTASIA also displayed its Street Corners Project in the beautiful Lister Block corridor that responded to the question “How would you change your neighbourhood, city, country and world?” On day two, an HCA “Kids Area” proudly displayed a herd of 14 aluminum caribou sculptures created by 500 children and local artist Dave Hind. We asked the community to contribute to the conversation about public parks by writing on a large community board in response to the statement “Every park has the right to...”. Responses were chosen and were etched on a large Community Caribou on site. Julia Hitchcock led an Urban Farming activity. Participants chose from vegetables, grain, flower and tree seeds and mixed them with locally harvested clay and compost to create seed balls which can be planted almost anywhere. Special thanks to our HCA teachers who demonstrated many of the programs offered including our Classical Realism course, Cartooning classes, and various dance and performing arts classes. If you missed SUPERCRAWL this year, be sure to join us next September. On Sunday, October 14th we welcomed Eric Himy for our first HCA Concert Series event of the year. The concert was quite memorable. Mr. Himy left the audience in amazement as he performed his program Gershwin in Paris. Hello to All! I am delighted to welcome all students and parents, both new and returning for the 2012-2013 year at the Ham-ilton Conservatory for the Arts. Registration has ended and the holidays are quickly approaching. We have a busy year ahead of us, filled with exciting and rewarding artistic experiences for us all. You may have noticed some improvements to the HCA website (www.HCArts.ca) – I hope the new site is easy to navigate and will allow for simple online registrations next fall. Please use the website as a tool for commu-nication—there are updates every week. You can find information on new classes, special events, and HCA news! There have also been many new developments throughout the building. Our maintenance staff has been working very hard to repair and renew the space. Special thanks to Linda Van Sikle for the beautiful job she did on our Holiday decora-tions—they look incredible. There are many new faces this fall at HCA. I would like to welcome a new staff member to our Music Department. Vitali Afanassiev is originally from Russia and teaches Piano, Clarinet, Theory, Flute, and Saxophone. I would also like to welcome a new staff member to our Visual Arts De-partment. Mike Gagnon is a working comic book industry professional with over 12 years of experience in writing, colouring and illustration. I would like to welcome George Qua-Enoo, a Hamilton based portrait and lifestyle photographer who is teaching photography classes. You may have noticed our new Administrative Assistant, Jacklyn Warming-ton. Jacklyn is a writer and photographer who currently contributes to Hamilton Magazine and writes her blog Beaux Mondes. We also welcome Yoga instructor Helena McKinney of In Fine Feather Yoga to The Hamilton Conservatory.

Thank you to everyone for their suggestions in the comment box. Your thoughts are important to us and we take every comment very seriously. We strive to continue to improve the quality of our building, our classes, and the overall experience at The Conservatory. If you have any thoughts, ideas, or concerns please feel free to leave a note in the box or send us an email. The HCA Gallery is proudly displaying works by Gisèle Comtois—please take a moment to view the beautiful collection. We are all busy preparing for our Performance Classes. These performances and open houses encourage our students by providing the opportunity to showcase their progress to friends and family. After our Performance Classes we hold a potluck reception. We appreciate our

parents who contribute by bringing tasty nut-free treats and beverages to share. The occasion is a great opportunity to meet the teacher, and celebrate student achievements in an informal atmosphere. We look forward to seeing everyone, and don’t forget to bring your camera! The HCA Concert Series has returned again this season with the kind sponsorship of Mr. Robert Summers-Gill. he HCA Concert Series welcomed Shoshana Telner November 18th. Hamilton Magazine named Shoshana one of Hamilton's "most facinating people and inspired individuals". It was quite a show. On febuary 10th at 2:00pm, Hamilton resident Valerie Tyron will join us and on March 2 th we welcome The Franz Josef Quartet at 7:30pm. Student and member ticket prices are available, be sure to check them out. The year certainly promises to be eventful!
