In order to earn a Visual Arts Certificate in Drawing, one must complete four core classes and at least two drawing electives (min. 76 contact hours). To earn a Visual Arts Certificate in Watercolor, one must complete six core classes and at least one watercolor elective (min. 79 contact hours). Upon completion of the Visual Arts Certificate in your choice of media, one should have learned the necessary skills for a solid foundation in art, enabling you to create original works from start to finish.

Beginning WatercolorInstructor: Brenda StevensMake a color wheel and learn how to mix an infinite palette of colors from the three primary colors of red, yellow and blue. Use black paint to make Ansel Adams’s ten point value scale and begin to understand the sculpting effect of light and shadow. Mother Nature in WatercolorInstructor: Brenda StevensAdvanced beginners who know how to mix colors and want to learn simple techniques for painting seascapes, trees, sunsets, stormy and clear skies, puffy white clouds, watery reflections and other natural elements will benefit greatly from this class. You can expect plenty of individual attention and helpful demonstrations to teach you exactly what to do. These techniques will be incorporated into your paintings for years to come. Drawing Crash CourseInstructor: Brenda StevensArtists do not possess magical powers; they develop a range of skills and then practice those skills until they become second nature. However, an artist does have a special way of seeing. They see light against dark, repeated patterns, shared edges of positive and negative shapes and the relationship of one thing to another. This four hour workshop, for beginners, promises to sharpen your powers of observation while improving your eye-to-hand coordination. In order to earn this certificate, three core classes and six electives (minimum of 72 hours) must be completed. Students who wish to gain practical, hands-on knowledge in the field will be able to develop new skills and build on existing skills in a relatively short time. Our program allows students, whether hobbyists, dedicated amatuers or aspiring professionals, to focus on the right techniques for their own personal success. A certificate may be General or awarded with a specialty in Portrait/Wedding, Digital Imaging or Fine Art.

FREE Information Session–This FREE information session will tell you everything you need to know about pursuing a certificate in Digital Photography. You will learn more about each of the classes in the curriculum and how to apply for the certificate once you have completed your coursework. In this two-part class, you will first spend a Thursday evening in the classroom as your instructor guides you through the essential

features of your digital camera and shows how to correct the most common beginner mistakes. Topics will include composition, creative auto-focus, exposure modes and more. On Saturday, explore Historic Uptown Columbus and apply the photography skills and techniques learned in the classroom. After lunch, you will return to the Photography Center to view your new images and receive constructive suggestions. Photography Fundamentals IInstructor: Patrick Albright or Kenny GrayPhotography has its own language and until you know the vocabulary, learning can be intimidating. Sometimes the best way to learn professional techniques is to watch a top pro in action. Our instructor and his wife

own one of Columbus’ most successful studios. and are nationally-known destination wedding specialists. Spend a Saturday morning with them as they shoot an engagement session in Uptown Columbus, then meet back at the Photography Center after lunch to see the results of the shoot and participate in a Q/A session covering lighting, posing and much more. Introduction to Sports PhotographyInstructor: Robin TrimarchiOur award-winning instructor takes a break from photographing SEC sports to lead this hands-on class. Spend a Monday evening in the classroom, where she will show her work and discuss equipment and strategies for capturing the best action shots. On Saturday, practice your new skills with the instuctor at a local youth sports venue. Then bring your work back to the classroom on Monday to share with the class. Our instructor is a photojournalist who served as Chief U.S. Photographer for Operations in Iraq also photographing in the United Arab

Emirates and Mexico. He shares the philosophy that family is the ideal subject for documentary photography. In this class you will learn the best gear, lighting and techniques for capturing family photographs that tell stories. Wildlife and Outdoor PhotographyInstructor: Donald TiptonOur resident expert wildlife and landscape photographer leads this exciting class at various venues in the area. Shooting HDSLR VideoInstructor: Patrick AlbrightGet the most out of your camera. If you own a DSLR capable of recording HD video, you can capture motion instead of moments. Explore techniques for shooting video, stabilizing the shot and lighting/white balance. We will discuss shutter speed/frame rates and its effect on video, recording sound effectively, accessories for your camera and much more. Video editing is not covered in this course. Creative Flash Photography: Classroom and Hands-OnInstructor: John HelmsDigital flash photography can be frustrating for even experienced photographers. Outdoor PortraitsInstructor: Richard DennardJoin a Master Photographer for this two-part workshop. On Thursday evening, you will get an illustrated overview of location portrait strategies and photography techniques. On Saturday morning, travel to a scenic spot for a portrait session with a live model. After a break for lunch, meet at another location for more posing and photography. Our instructor has traveled the world photographing nature and wildlife professionally. Join him for this exciting

weekend exploring and photographing the barrier islands, back bay and gulf waters near Panama City Beach, Florida. Travel to select locations by pontoon boat (provided), car or on foot, shooting on-site. Bring your laptop, tripod and an island attitude. Tuition covers instruction only. Photography Studio RentalBefore you invest in a home studio, consider taking advantage of the uptown Rankin Arts Photography Center. The 350 square-foot space features 11-foot ceilings and a closet filled with accessories, props and clothing to enhance your shoot. The RAPC studio is fully equipped with white lighting studio flash units and accessories, a Quantum Radio Slave Receiver and Transmitter, a flash meter and a variety of backdrops available for your use. Private Photography LessonsPrivate lessons are a great way for individuals to learn techniques beyond the courses that are offered through the Rankin Photography Arts Center. FEES Course fees are stated at the end of each course description and payment is due at the time of registration. Laws exempting senior citizens from college tuition costs do not apply to these self-supported courses. No cash is available after 4:30 p.m. If you register after 4:30 p.m., please have the exact amount or pay by check, credit card, or company billing (purchase order number and contact person required). PAYMENT PLAN POLICY Continuing Education offers payment plans for select Professional Development courses. Eligible courses are taught in-house with a tuition fee of $300 or more. Online courses or courses offered via third-party educational partners do not qualify for this payment plan option. However, some of these programs may be eligible for financial assistanceoffered through the educational partner.

The Continuing Education payment plan offers the option of paying tuition in three installments. 50% of the tuition is due at the time of registration. The remaining 50% is divided into two equal installments: the first is due on or before the first day of class; the last installment is due by the mid-point of the class. In order to utilize the Continuing Education payment plan option, you must register for the desired course(s) in person and complete a Payment Plan Agreement. For more information or to inquire about the eligibility of specific classes, please call 706.507.8073.

REFUND POLICY As Continuing Education (CE) is a self-supporting branch of Columbus State University, we rely on student registration fees to cover all costs. If you must withdraw from a class, please notify us by 5:00 PM at least three business days before the course begins. A full refund minus a $15 processing fee will be issued. You may also choose to accept a CE credit voucher for the full course amount, in lieu of a refund, and processing fee will be waived. If you withdraw after the 3-day period, but before the class begins, you will receive a 50% refund or credit voucher. No refunds can be given after a class begins.

In the event of class cancellation or changes of times and dates, we will attempt to notify you at least two business days before the course begins. If you cannot attend the course due to these changes, you will receive a CE credit voucher, which is valid for 18 months from the date of issue.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY Columbus State University will not issue refunds for classes which have been postponed due to inclement weather or other circumstances beyond our control. We will make every effort to reschedule such classes. In the event of inclement weather, tune into your local radio or television station for information about closings.

PERMANENT RECORDS The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a nationally recognized measurement of noncredit course work. One CEU (1.0) may be awarded for each ten hours of participation in an approved program. We keep a permanent record of participation in selected programs, issue a certificate to acknowledge successful completion of the program, and provide official transcripts to you or your employer.

FUNDING OPTIONS Many of our certificate courses are approved for VA education benefits by the Department of Veterans Affairs. For information or to inquire about a specific course, call 706.507.8070.
