As we welcome in 2013….a time ofnew beginnings for all of us, we alsoreflect back on a Fall and EarlyWinter that began with the Openingcelebration of the Center forWorkforce Development andProfessional Studies.

We also remain mindful of thedevastation that has impacted somany lives and property as a result

of Hurricane Sandy and the Nor’easter that followed it….and our hearts go out to allthe people and communities that still remain affected by its aftermath.

The Fall also brought recognition to Lourdes Mangual de Delgado, ContinuingEducation’s Marketing Coordinator, for receiving the Continuing EducationAssociation of New York (CEANY) Award for Outstanding Marketing. Lourdes workstirelessly to identify new ways for us to reach our expanding audience of learners.

The New Year brings a farewell to our Assistant Dean, Lorraine Altman. Lorraine isretiring after over 10 years spent planting the seeds and expanding the vision ofwhat is possible in lifelong learning and workforce development opportunities forresidents of the Bronx and Upper Manhattan.

We invite you to review all the course offerings including new certificate programsthat are launching this semester. We are increasing to 10 percent our traditionalOpen House Discount (see page 4). Check out our non-tuition Grant Programs,including the Pipeline Program (see page 8) that are no-cost opportunities to notjust find a job, but to also build a career.

The Division plays a prominent role in the mission of

Hostos Community College, that is, to provide access

to higher and postsecondary educational opportunities

leading to intellectual growth and socio-economic

Hostos Community College received a

Health Profession Opportunity Grant from

the US Department of Health and Human

Services to offer the Allied Health Career

Pipeline Program. The program is a

career-focused job training program for

low-income individuals to gain careers in

the allied health professions. The

Pipeline Program will provide enrolled

students with all the necessary services

and support to complete the training

course and internship, pass the state

certification examination and achieve

employment. Ultimately, students may

choose to continue their training along

the pipeline leading to college entry to

become a Licensed Practical Nurse

(LPN).

CUNY CareerPATH (Preparation for Adults through Training andHigher Education) is a low to no-cost program supporting unemployedadults and adult workers looking to advance their careers by providingopportunities to earn both industry-recognized credentials with collegecredits and to find jobs in the healthcare sector.

At Hostos Community College we offer:� Credit-bearing certificate programs in Community Health Worker and

Health Information Technology Professional

� Academic basic skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and ESL support

� Hands-on training and externships

� Career counseling services and job placement assistance

� College advisement and Associate Degree paths

Eligibility Requirements:� Adults, preferably 24 or older

� High School Diploma or GED©

� Desire to go to college (participants must take CUNY Assessment Test)

� Legally authorized to work in the United States

� Desire to work in healthcare sector

� Unemployed, dislocated or TAA-eligible worker

� Not currently enrolled and matriculated in college

� Minimum 10th grade reading and writing level

This program will train community residents ofthe south Bronx and northern Manhattan whomeet the eligibility requirements to join thehealthcare workforce as “community healthworkers”. The training will consist of 120 hourscentered around community health worker corecompetencies, and contemporary health issuessuch as asthma, diabetes, heart disease andchronic disease self-management.

Community Health Worker

This program will train candidates who meet theeligibility requirements to join the healthcareworkforce as “Health Information TechnologyProfessionals”. The Technical Software SupportStaff program will focus on networking andhealth information exchange, vendor-specific sys-tems, introduction to information and computerscience, working with health IT systems, andconfiguration of electronic health records.

The Hostos Adult Learning Center seeks to help adults obtain thenecessary skills and/or credentials to transition to college oremployment. For men and women who have not completed highschool and/or have limited English language skills, program services provide students with achance to build basic skills, strengthen their academic foundation, and/or prepare for the highschool equivalency exam in an engaging learning environment.

The Young Men’s Initiative (YMI) IMPACT PeerMentoring Project at the Adult Learning Centeris structured to improve GED pass rates,increase college enrollment & retention, and toprovide peer mentoring college support for blackand Latino males from 18 to 25 years of age.Young females are also welcome to apply.Must be enrolled in ALC GED class in orderto be eligible for services.

Partnerships

The Center for Bronx Non-Profits (CBNP) at HostosCommunity College is a convening, training, andresource-sharing space that strengthens the capac-ity of local community leaders and non-profit organ-izations serving the Bronx. The work of the CBNP isBronx-based and community-focused. It links Bronx non-profits with

resources of all kinds, both in and outside of the borough. Existing and newly developedCBNP programs focus on building technical skills as well as helping leaders identify oppor-tunities and address challenges confronting their organizations.

Since 2002, Hostos Community College’s Continuing Education Workforce Division haspartnered with CAUSE-NY, the inter-group relations division of the Jewish CommunityRelations Council of NY(JCRC), to build this vision into a reality. Now housed at our newlocation at the new Center for Workforce Development and Continuing Education at 560Exterior Street, the CBNP is poised to offer an even more extensive array of programmingfor Spring 2013 year. Interested in enhancing your skills and improving your non-profitorganization! Attend our professional development series in the Spring.

You must be a strong reader to pass the GED®exam. This class is designed for students have takenand passed the math section of the official GED®test, but need assistance in passing one or more ofthe other sections of the exam (i.e. language arts,science, and social studies). Improve your English language skills with our comprehensive offering of English classes.With basic, intermediate, and advance level courses available, we offer instruction atvarious levels of language proficiency. This course is designed for students with advancelevel language skills who wish to improve theirEnglish in order to enroll in college. Instruction willfocus on building academic skills, introducing stu-dents to college life, and helping them prepare forthe CUNY entrance exam. This introductory course on the basic procedures used for obtaining blood from

veins and capillaries is available to students who have a current NYS Certified

Nurse Aide certificate, RN or LPN licenses. Students will learn the skills and

responsibilities of the professional phlebotomist. Topics include standard precau-

tions, collecting blood specimens for diagnosis and treatment, performing capillary punctures,

and more. This course is a combination of theory and practical training. Live veinipunctures,

conducted in class, will be a component of this course. Participating students and volunteer

subjects must sign an "Acknowledgement of Risk" form. Upon successful completion, students

will be able to sit for the NHA Certification exam. (The Hostos coordinator’s permission is

Registered Dental Hygienists are now permitted, under the direct supervisionof a dentist, to administer intraoral and infiltration anesthesia or nitrous oxideanalgesia to a patient who is 18 years of age or older. Hostos CommunityCollege’s Department of Dental Hygiene is offering a course for certification inLocal Anesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia.

In compliance with recent law in New York, this course will facilitate the New York Statelicensed dental hygienist’s application for a Restricted Certificate in Local InfiltrationAnesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia. The program will be comprised of lectures (30 hours) andhands-on clinical application (15 hours) under faculty supervision.

Upon successful completion of this course, the dental hygienist will be able to apply for cer-tification through the New York State Education Department.

Participants who do not meet clinical competency for local anesthesia and nitrous oxide pro-cedures will not be permitted to challenge the written certification exam and will be requiredto retake the entire course at their own expense.

High School Tutorial Prep

A high school diploma expands career and education opportunities for high school gradu-ates. In New York City, high school students must successfully complete Regents examsto graduate. When they pass these exams, they earn a local, Regents or Advanced RegentsDiploma. High school students begin to fulfill their graduation requirements in the 9thgrade. They must receive a minimum score of 65 on all five of the required exams: EnglishLanguage Arts, Global History, U.S. History, Science and Algebra. Students who earnscores of 90 or better on their exams will receive an Advanced Regents Diploma.

Our High School Tutorial Prep courses present a review of course curriculum for each ofthe above disciplines. Emphasis will be placed on strategies for answering multiple-choiceand essay questions, as well as open-ended critical thinking questions. Tuition Discount:Register for 2 or more classes: 5% discount. Seniors (62 years or older): 15% discount. HCC stu-dents, staff, and alumni with valid ID card: 15% discount. Note: Only one discount applies.

Registration Fee:There is a non-refundable $20 registration fee per person, per semester.

Tuition and Fees:Registration is done on a first come first served basis. Students are not considered officially reg-istered until they have completed their tuition payment. Most courses require the purchase ofbooks. Students must pay in full when registering. No personal checks accepted.

Changes in Program:The Continuing Education Program reserves the right to cancel courses, to make substitutions infaculty, and to change the days, times, and locations of classes if necessary.

We are not responsible for misprints in catalogues, brochures and/or advertisements. In the eventof an error, we will make every effort to provide you with corrected information. All coursesdepend on sufficient registration to operate. If a course is cancelled by the College, all registrantswill receive a full refund.

Session Guarantee:Bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances may cause the cancellation of a class ses-sion.
