The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) is an essential partner for every veterinarian at each stage of their career. Our Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program has been developed and curated by a dedicated team of volunteer members and staff and has been tailored by special interest and region to assist the needs of our members.

With our profession’s dedication to life-long learning, we are very grateful for the hardworking special interest and division committees that prepare the program each year. It is this passion and commitment that makes AVA’s CPD program outstanding value for its members.

AVA is also very proud that all monies raised through the program can provide more training and services to our members. For 2018 it will be a privilege to present over 200 courses, conferences and events for AVA members throughout the country.

The CPD Handbook is intended to assist you in getting organised for 2018. We encourage you to use it to plan for the learning needs of yourself and your team in the coming year.

By making the most of the services available to you as a member, you can continue to develop and nurture your clinical skills, to advance your career goals and to improve your personal effectiveness.

In addition, the social and wellbeing programs that we have built into our activities are as important as the CPD itself. They are designed to give members time to reflect, to share experiences and learning in an informal setting and to broaden their networks.

We continually update the handbook throughout the year as it comes to hand, and you can register for these events through the AVA website.

I look forward to seeing you at our CPD events throughout 2018.

An equine veterinarian needs to be fully competent in all aspects of performing the Pre-Purchase Examination. Be that in either the Sporthorse, Racehorse or the Juvenile, being able to to communicate effectively with the Purchaser and Vendor; knowing how to report abnormal findings; drug screening; being able to assess the use of radiology, endoscopy and drug screening and very importantly, avoiding litigation from a disgruntled client are essential skills for the equine vet. EVA’s excellent Pre-Purchase Examination video will be used to cover all the aspects in a completely interactive process. With newly updated material for 2018 and presented by two former presidents of Equine Veterinarians Australia, this comprehensive one day Pre Purchase Examination workshop is a must for equine veterinarians and mixed practitioners alike. All delegates will receive a complementary copy of the brand new edition of the ‘EVA Blue Book: A guide to the examination of the horse.’ The workshop is excellent value and attracts 11 VetEd Points.

Radiology is an essential discipline for the equine veterinarian. Your skill and ability in radiology can be developed and attendance at this two day EVA wet-lab workshop will assit you in achieving that objective. The first day will teach participants how to improve their ability in taking the 36 standard views that are required for lodgement in the repository at the yearling sales. Using the very latest in first class equipment, hands-on

instruction will improve your ability in shooting, reading and interpreting the 36 views. Day Two will focus on advanced views incuding upper limbs, head and neck with hands-on instruction in shooting, reading and interpreting the views. The day will also cover what is required from radiological views being shot for a Pre-Purchase Examination. This course is very practical and is suitable for recent graduates, veterinarians returning to practice or for those that wish to get the very best from their radiology work. Being presented by foremost experts in the field of radiology, Drs Kirsten Neil, Johnathan Lumsden and supported by friendly and highly experienced demonstrators.

This includes the skill of actually performing the procedure as well as being able to identify the common conditions and understand their aetiopathogenesis, significance and treatment options.Lectures will include video recordings to demonstrate appropriate endoscopic techniques of the URT and UG systems. These will include demonstration of the technique for obtaining and recording pre-sale endoscopic evaluations of yearlings for sale and a complete examination of the URT and UG. The lectures will be interactive, encouraging discussion and debate. Practice Managers can be a valuable asset to veterinary practices as they possess the skill set to streamline business operations and drive growth. However, practice owners may be unsure of the key roles they play and the tangible benefits they can provide.

This webinar uses insights from three experienced practice managers to discuss the key roles and responsibilities of a practice manager, the benefits they provide in transforming business operations and the stage at which business owners should decide to employ one.

WEBINARAPPOINTING A PRACTICE MANAGER

Division: VBGDate: 13 March 2018Duration: 1 hourDelivery Platform: Online

Speaker: Alison Lambert

An essential part of the decision making process in whether to appoint a practice manager is deciding whether you really will let them manage once employed! Are you ready to appoint a manager? Can you afford one? Do you need one? Will you support one or just keep tinkering with bits like you always have?! It’s more about behaviours than dollars. In this webinar, you will be challenged to think about what role a manager will actually play in your business, where they add value and how you measure their input. We will look at what we really mean by manager. Do you really mean administrator? These are two very different roles. You will learn the importance of letting go and letting folks manage …are you ready for that?

Speaker: James Ramsden & Ben Tefler

WEBINARTOP 10 RISKS

Division: VBGDate: 5 June 2018Duration: 1 hourDelivery Platform: Online

Speaker: Christie Boucher

Managing risks is important for veterinary practices. By managing risks, practices are less likely to face poor outcomes and unhappy clients. However, for anyone to manage their risks, they first need to identify and understand them. Guild Insurance’s claims information helps us understand common risks and how they can be managed.

In this webinar, Guild’s claims information will be used to identify and discuss the common complaints, and therefore risks, faced by veterinary practices. This will be discussed using claims examples and complaints heard from clients. Participants will be given practical tips which they can apply to their practice to reduce the likelihood of these risks becoming a reality.

WEBINARDECREASE COMPLAINTS BY BETTER COMMUNICATION

Division: VBGDate: 19 June 2018Duration: 1 hourDelivery Platform: Online

Speaker: Christie Boucher

It’s often assumed that complaints are directly linked to clinical outcomes. Whilst a poor clinical outcome can contribute to a complaint, there are other factors. This session will provide information about the relationship between communication breakdowns and client complaints and how communication can be improved.

In this webinar, Guild’s claims experience will be used to explore how communication can contribute to the likelihood of a client complaining. Communication is a very broad term and it’s used in so many ways between different people at a veterinary practice. Unfortunately, the importance of communication is too often overlooked; this webinar will remind people of the key role it plays.

WEBINARTHE VET PRACTICE FITOUT PROCESS – CONSULT STAGE

Division: VBGDate: 3 July 2018Duration: 1 hourDelivery Platform: Online

Speaker: Ian Shapland

When you are ready to start the process of fitting out your new practice, you often don’t know where to start. If you break your fit-out project into manageable stages you can achieve a lot or even decide whether it is better to engage a design and fit-out professional..

In this webinar, you will learn to identify the potential challenges that will come up when starting the fit-out process such as town planning requirements and how this will impact your timeline and budget. During the webinar we identify a typical persona and provide a case study of a client fit-out for this stage of the process.

WEBINARTHE VET PRACTICE FITOUT PROCESS – PLANNING STAGE

Division: VBGDate: 24 July 2018Duration: 1 hourDelivery Platform: Online

Speaker: Ian Shapland

When planning a fit-out, you will always need to analyse and assess all aspects of your new practice regardless if you use a design and build fit-out expert or just do it yourself. You will need to envisage the day-to-day practicalities of how your new practice will work from a technical and operational functionality perspective.

In this webinar, we will discuss your day-to-day operations to determine your action plan so that you and your practice function productively. We also discuss the type of client in this stage and review a case study.

SEMINARTHORACIC RADIOLOGY

Division: VICDate: 21 February 2018 Duration: 2 hoursVenue: Mercure North MelbourneAddress: Harker St & Flemington Rd, North Melbourne VIC 3052State: Victoria

Speaker: Dr Marjorie Milne, Senior Lecturer in Diagnostic Imaging, UoM Relevance: From coughing dogs to dyspnoeic cats, cardiorespiratory problems are commonly encountered in general practice. Thoracic radiographs often play a crucial role in solving the diagnostic puzzle. Successful thoracic radiology not only relies on acquiring diagnostic quality radiographs, but having some tricks for interpretation that can help determine if the problem is cardiac, pulmonary, or pleural space in location. This seminar will involve practical small group work and active discussion and questions are encouraged.

Learning Outcomes: • Describe key considerations for making diagnostic

quality chest radiographs. • Identify when radiographic quality may complicate

interpretation.• Identify in which ‘compartment’ of the thorax the main

problem resides: cardiac, pulmonary, pleural space?

• Formulate and appropriately rank a differential diagnosis list based on the affected compartment, radiographic appearance, and relevant clinical information.

SEMINARTHE END TIMES - HELPING YOUR CLIENTS IN THE MOST DIFFICULT TIME

Division: QLDDate: 31 May 2018 Duration: 2 hoursVenue: Kawana Library Meeting Room - Sunshine CoastAddress: S30 Nanyima St, Buddina QLD 4575State: Queensland

Speaker: Dr Michael O’Donoghue

This seminar is about helping your clients through the last stages of their pets life.

At this end stage every word you say, every action you take, will be thought about over and over for maybe more than a year.

Vets receive more cards after euthanaize pets then at any other time, they may have saved the pets life several times, but it is only at the end that the client acknowledges the effort.

Michael has been working with pet loss counselors for several years, and finds it interesting to hear what people are really thinking, and what happens months later, or over the next few months in the clients thoughts and feelings.

Pet loss and grief is a very significant part of owning a pet, as people become closer to their pets and spend more money on them, they are more likely to bond more significantly with them. Pet loss can be similar to losing a child, but most parents will never see a child die, but with pets it is more likely to happen, with the average lifespan of a dog or cat about 12 years.

This presentation is about the long term impact of those decisions and what best can be done to help people through this difficult time.

SEMINARWHAT IS THE EYE TRYING TO TELL ME? COMMON CLINICAL SIGNS OF OCULAR DISEASE AND WHAT THEY MEAN.

Division: VICDate: 7 June 2018 Duration: 2 hoursVenue: EODEV OfficesAddress: 1 Taylor Street, Epsom, BendigoState: Victoria

Speaker: Dr Simon Hurn

Relevance: Recognising the signs of eye disease early in the course of their development is often the most critical factor determining successful treatment of many ocular diseases.Outcomes: Clinical signs of ocular disease can give us valuable information about the type, severity, location chronicity of ocular disease. Common signs of eye disease will be explored with an emphasis on how general practitioners can use the information gathered during an ophthalmic examination to help facilitate better treatment outcomes.

SEMINARFROM POCKET TO PADDOCK

Division: WADate: 9 June 2018 Duration: 4 hoursVenue: Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD)Address: 444 Albany HIghway, Albany WA 6330State: Western Australia

Speakers: Speakers: Dr James Haberfield BSc BVMS PGCBM MANZCVS (Medicine and Surgery of Unusual Pets, Avian Health)Join Dr James Haberfield and DPIRD staff as we look at the animals which don’t meow or bark! Start the day learning about rabbits - from husbandry and diet to recommended preventative vet care. James will then move on to the humble hen. Dr David Forshaw will talk about the neurological horse while Dr Andrew Larkins will give you an update on the status of the bovine blood parasite, Theileria orientalis. The day will end with an hour of case discussions - bring in your perplexing cases and burning questions so that we can work on solutions as a group.

SEMINARTHE URINARY OBSTRUCTED CAT

Division: TASDate: 13 June 2018 Duration: 1 hourVenue: Guild InsuranceAddress: 2/38 Montpelier Retreat, Battery Point TAS 7004State: Tasmania

Speaker: Dr Vibeke Russell

This AVA seminar will discuss how obstructive lower urinary tract disease in cats can be very frustrating. Especially if it is the second or third time a cat has been obstructed and the owner has run out of patience and used their savings. We discuss why we are seeing fewer lower urinary tract obstructions, and ways to prevent the subsequent event. We also touch on ureteral obstruction and the apparent increase in cases seen.

SEMINARUSE OF QUANTITATIVE PCR TESTING IN SMALL ANIMAL CLINICAL PRACTICE

Division: VICDate: 13 June 2018 Duration: 2 hoursVenue: Geelong RSLAddress: 50 Barwon Heads Road, Belmont, GeelongState: Victoria

Speaker: Dr Steven Holloway, BVSc MVSc Dip ACVIM MANZCVS Registered Specialist in Small Animal Medicine PhD

Molecular biology based diagnostic tests are now commonplace in small animal practice when investigating infectious diseases. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods initially used for diagnostic testing were limited in many cases to a simple positive or negative result. The advent of quantitative methods of PCR have now allowed for more meaningful results where a pathogens DNA or RNA can be quantitated and the result assessed for causality. Furthermore multiple pathogens can be tested for at the same time.

This presentation will discuss the use of quantitative PCR methods in different clinical scenarios. Examples including chronic diarrhoea, respiratory disease and neurological disease using clinical case material. Treatment options for different scenarios will also be discussed.

Learning Outcomes:

• Perform a major body system assessment. Create a prioritised problem list

• Initiate appropriate stabilisation

• List the most common trauma related problems of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological systems

• Shrewdly select diagnostic tests that give you the most useful information

And hopefully save a few more trauma patients!SEMINARVIC & NSW SURGERY & DENTAL SEMINAR

Division: NSW and VIC Date: 26 July 2018 Duration: 2 hoursVenue: Quality Resort SiestaAddress: 416-422 Wagga Road, Albury NSW 2641State: New South Wales

Speaker: Dr Rod Salter and Dr. Peter Young

Surgery Seminar: An opportunity to develop confidence in managing traumatic wounds and to develop a plan for closure of extensive tumour resections. Often, vets in general practice sometimes avoid large or aggressive tumour resections because of concerns about wound closure, which often results in tumour recurrence. Confidence in developing closure techniques will result in better outcomes. Extensive wounds often benefit for flap or graft closure. Multiple case series will be shown which will demostrate appropriate outcomes. As well, failures which occurred due to poor planning will be highlighted.

behaviour as well as changes in the appearance of the eye. Emergencies need to be diagnosed and treated appropriately as vision loss can rapidly occur and potentially become permanent, especially if the chance to treat appropriately is missed. This talk will help you to recognise an ophthalmic emergency and give you some indication as to what to do and when to do it. We will cover a range of ophthalmic emergencies including proptosis, glaucoma and ulceration.

Speaker: Dr Dez Hughes BVSc Diplomate ACVECC, Associate Professor and Service Head, Emergency and Critical Care, UoM

Relevance: We all see them commonly and many of them have escaped serious injury. But the unlucky ones have cardiovascular, respiratory or neurological injuries that can range from mild to imminently life threatening. The really unlucky ones have all three! Employing a standardised approach using the Major Body System Assessment method allows rapid, efficient identification of the severity of injuries as well as the order in which to stabilise them: WHAT’S GOING TO KILL IT FIRST?

Using loads of images, videos and case examples we will talk about MBS assessment, differential diagnoses, which diagnostic tests are most useful and how diagnostic testing is always a balance between whether the information will change what we do vs how stressful it is to the patient.

SEMINAREMERGENCY TRIAGE OF BIRDS AND EXOTIC PETS

Division: VICDate: 6 June 2018Duration: 2 hoursVenue: Metropole HotelAddress: 44 Brunswick St, Fitzroy VIC 3065State: Victoria

Speaker: Dr Jaclyn Gatt, BVSc MVS (Conservation Medicine) Relevance: Birds and exotic pets are becoming increasingly popular pets, yet for many practitioners their presence in the appointment schedule induces an audible groan. These patients go to great lengths to hide their illness, so by the time they present to a vet, it is often an emergency. Getting a positive outcome for these patients requires effective triage and stabilisation on arrival. This seminar will focus on identifying the needs of commonly encountered exotic patients and what to do for them in an emergency situation. There will be plenty of practical tips and case examples to get us through. Learning Outcomes• Identify key considerations for triaging birds, exotic

companion mammals and reptiles in an emergency• Describe key considerations for stabilising birds, exotic

companion mammals and reptiles• Formulate an appropriate analgesia and fluid therapy

plan for these species

Speaker: Professor Colin Masters B MEd Sci (Hons) MBBS MD Hon DLitt W.Aust FRCPath FRCPA FAA FTSE AO

Colin Masters has focused his career on research in Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, including Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. His work over the last 35 years is widely acknowledged as having had a major influence on Alzheimer’s disease research world-wide, particularly the collaborative studies conducted with Konrad Beyreuther in which they discovered the proteolytic neuronal origin of the Aβ amyloid protein which causes Alzheimer’s disease. This work has led to the continued development of diagnostics and therapeutic strategies. More recently, his focus has been on describing the natural history of Alzheimer’s disease as a necessary preparatory step for therapeutic disease modification.

Prof Masters will talk about the latest advances in Alzheimer’s disease research into its diagnostics and treatment/prevention/retardation. Professor Masters is currently the Head of the Neurodegeneration Division, Florey Institute and a Laureate Professor at the University of Melbourne.
