Special Guest Speaker: Stew Burkhammer Stewart C. “Stew” Burkhammer, P.E., CSP, OHST, ASSE Fellow, has 40 years experience in private industry and 3-1/2 years experience with OSHA. He is currently the Director of the Offi ce of Construction Services for the Directorate of Construction within OSHA. Stew is also a Professional Engineer, a Certifi ed Safety Professional, and a Certifi ed Occupational Safety and Health Technologist. He was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Safety Engineers in 2000, and was presented with the Distinguished Safety and Health Professional Award from the Safety Equipment Institute in 1998. In addition, Burkhammer has Chaired OSHA’s Advisory Committee for Construction Safety and Health, has served as CEO and Board President for the Safety Equipment Institute, is past president of the Board of Certifi ed Safety Professionals, and has been a keynote speaker on the topics of ES&H at several global conferences and seminars.

NY State Labor Law – Employers rights -- Management Track (11:00am - 12:00pm)This session will cover an overview of the NY code of Rules and Regulations regarding NYS Code 240. Silica – Are you at risk and don’t even know it?!? -- Environmental Track (3:00pm - 4:00pm)Crystalline silica affects the health of thousands of workers every year. If you work in a dusty environment or with products that contain sand you may be at risk. Common jobs where dangerous exposure to silica is possible include: abrasive blasting using silica sand as the abrasive; abrasive blasting of concrete; chipping, hammering, and drilling rock; crushing, loading, hauling, and dumping rock; chipping, hammering, drilling, sawing, and grinding concrete or masonry; demolition of concrete and masonry structures; dry sweeping or pressurized air blowing of concrete or sand dust. Come fi nd out what silicosis is, how silica exposure is determined and how you can minimize your exposure. Work Zone Safety & Compliance -- Construction Track (11:00am - 12:00pm)

A review of the standards including MUTCD and OSHA rules and regulations. Also covered will be liability issues, actual procedures for work zone set up and proper device usage - including what work site devices should look like, where to place them and how to recognize non-compliant models. Speaker: Dennis Wright, DMW Associates. Dennis has 33 years of service with the New York State Department of Transportation and is recognized as one of the foremost authorities for Work Zone safety and compliance.

Scaffold Safety, Techniques, Solutions -- Management Track (3:00pm - 4:00pm)

This session cover basics of CFR 1926.451 & 1926.454 scaffolding compliance. A look at the regulation, the training requirements and discussion on pragmatic approaches for compliance. This session will also feature a focus on the most recent and common OSHA & PESH citations as they pertain to scaffolding.Speaker: Bill Stoddard, Professional Safety Consultant and Trainer

Trenching & Excavation Safety -- Construction Track (3:00pm - 4:00pm)Trenching & excavation continues to be a leading cause of construction fatalities. This session will focus on the protection of workers who must work in trenches or excavations and the protection of underground utilities. Representatives from OSHA and Dig Safely New York will provide an overview of the requirements of their respective organizations and some of the common problems they encounter. Speaker: Gordon Deleys, Compliance Assistance Specialist, U.S. Department of Labor - OSHA and Representatives from Dig Safely New York.

“I Was Buried Alive and Survived” (1:15pm - 2:00pm)A construction worker tells the story of how he was “buried alive” while working in a trench. He explains the circumstances and events surrounding his accident and the profound effects it has had on him and his family. Eric speaks from the heart with a desire for you to learn from his death-defying safety message. He has a very genuine approach and his presentation’s intent is to prevent his experience from ever happening to anyone again.
