    Abstract. he article is a contribution to knowledge of the bryophyte flora of the Djerdap National Park in the EasternSerbia. Eighty-two bryophyte species were recorded, 71 mosses and 11 liverworts.

    Introduction

    Although there have been some recent attempts to im-prove knowledge on the bryophyte flora of Serbia, manyregions are still very poorly known and many new spe-cies can be recorded (e.g. Sabovljevi 1999, 2003a, b;Blockeel & al. 2000, 2003; Sabovljevi & Stevanovi2000; Papp & Sabovljevi 2001; Sabovljevi & Cveti2001, 2003; Velji & al, 2001; Sabovljevi & Srgio 2002;Pcs & al. 2004). Even the regions under legal protec-tion, like the National Parks, are out of knowledge onbryophytes growing within them. Lately, some data onbryophytes from four National Parks of Serbia havebeen presented (NP ar Planina: Sabovljevi 1998; NPara: Papp & Sabovljevi 2002; NP Kopaonik: Papp &al. 2004; NP Fruka Gora: Cveti & Sabovljevi, 2005).

    Presently, there is one more National Park in Serbia withno data on bryophytes: the Djerdap National Park.

    he Djerdap National Park (Iron Gate Gorge of theDanube) is situated in the Eastern Serbia, on the rightside of the Danube canyon (Fig. 1). he park is an in-ternationally protected region which continues into theRomanian Iron Gate Nature Reserve (Parcul NaturalPortile de Fier), along the left bank of the Danube. hearea of the park in Serbia covers 63.608 ha, with a sur-rounding protective area of 93.968 ha. he DjerdapNational Park follows some 100 km of the Danube,from Golubac town to Karatas by Kladovo, coveringa narrow strip of forested hills, about 28 km wide, inthe altitude range from 50 to 800 meters.

    he Djerdap gorge was declared a National Parkin 1974. he park is mostly covered by the forest(ca. 64 %). It comprises terrestrial and river parts andconsists of three canyon-gorge valleys (Golubaka,Gospodjin Vir and Mali i Veliki Kazan) and tree ba-sins (Ljupkovska, Donjomilanovaka and Oravska).Canyons cut into the limestone rocks of the SouthCarpathians.

    he park ecosystems have refugial characteristics,with high percentage of relict species and communi-ties and this is one of the most valuable peculiarities ofthis region (Stevanovi & Vasi 1995).

    he specific climatic conditions, relief and soils,and hydrology referred especially to the Danube can-yon have endowed this region with some of the mostcomplex and richest relict vegetation in SE Europe.he taxonomic richness of the vascular flora amountsto over 1100 species within the park limits, with unu-sually rich relict tree flora (Stevanovi & Vasi 1995).Of the ca. 50 forest communities within the park, about35 have relict characteristics, some of which are rel-ict and endemic polydominant forest types (eg. Fago-colurnetum mixtum; Querco-colurnetum mixtum;Fraxino colurnetum mixtum; Syringo-colurnetum mix-

    tum; Celto-Juglandetum) (Stevanovi & Vasi 1995).Endemics are mostly present among the non-tree spe-cies and one of the famous endemics of the Djerdapgorge is ulipa hungarica.

    he main natural feature and attraction of theDjerdap National Park is the Djerdap gorge the fa-mous Iron Gate a magnificent gateway through thesouthern slopes of the Carpathian Mountains, wherethe longest and greatest river accumulation in Serbiais located.

    Up to date no bryophyte survey has been made inthe region of the Djerdap National Park, although afew bryophyte records can be found (Pavleti 1955).

    Materials and methods

    In July of 2001, the author compiled a huge collectionof bryophytes. he bryophyte specimens are depos-ited in BEOU herbarium. he transect method wasused to cover as many different ecosystems as possi-ble in the central region of the Djerdap National Park(Fig. 1). he nomenclature mainly follows for moss-es Corley & al. (1981), Corley and Crundwell (1991),Cortini-Pedrotti (2001a, b) and for hepatics Grolle

    and Long (2001). Bryum lanatum is treated as a goodspecies according to Frahm (2002).

    Disscusion and conclusion

    he study is the first step to the bryophyte flora ofthe Djerdap National Park with the surrounding ar-eas. A further investigation is expected to increasethe number of bryophyte species, especially consider-ing the fact that the collection period was extreme-ly dry and that only a small part of the National Parkwas covered. here have been no nationally red-listedspecies among the recorded species (Sabovljevi & al.2004) or internationally (ECCB 1995).
