Rob Smith, CAA CEO Welcome to the 2015 CAA National Convention!

We have entitled this year’s annual celebration “Yes We Can” to reflect the optimism and positivity we hear most every time we speak to a member of our Association or our industry.Canadian cattlemen are an intrepid group – independent, entrepreneurial, ecologically-respectful – and are as committed to their livestock as any agriculturists anywhere in the world… if not more so. Our people have long been about endurance… about ‘buckling down’ and ‘gritting our teeth’ through the tough times. There have certainly been some of those. But each year, over the past few, we have seen our people become a little ‘lighter’ in spirit… a bit… relieved. Optimism and positivity have ALWAYS been there, and always will be. But the market conditions are giving our people the chance to actually breathe. To think about plans beyond this or next year… plans that may actually be greater than us. To think about our next generation and even to move forward into

succession for our operation. Today, as opposed to a few years ago, the future is something we can be excited about. And enough to get a lot of other people excited, too.Indeed, we are in great times! And whether you are wanting to expand your operation, or invite your children or grandchildren to ‘come home’ and realize their lifelong dream of being a full-time cattleman, or if you want to finally capitalize on your years of dedicated hard work and get out now while the prices are extraordinary (although based on the virtually non-existent number of dispersal sales last fall, I think most of you are thinking more of the former than the latter), our Convention wants to celebrate with you that, “Yes We Can”. There is nothing right now that you cannot do as a cattleman. For a sector that got pretty used to ‘a world of NO’, we are now operating in ‘a world of YES’! And how great that makes me feel for our cattlemen who I respect so much and for whom I feel this is almost like winning the lottery… except that you are now just being paid for what your product is worth. And what your effort has been worth, for a long, long time. And, of course, we all still have to work! Maybe harder than ever before…

So we’ve compiled speakers and sessions and personalities we hope will assist with your celebration… with your forward thinking and planning. There will be Angus people from across Canada, the United States, Mexico and beyond. We are very excited to see you and hope you enjoy your time at Convention 2015.If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask any member of your CAA staff team or your elected CAA Board members. We are all committed to delivering a great experience for you and hope you enjoy the learning, networking, breed building and marketing that our Convention hopes to maximize.And remember… YES… WE CAN!!!

We are honored to host you here at Angus Central, our national headquarters. For many of you this may be the first time you are able to tour our new Angus office. We know you will feel a great sense of pride in what you have built.As we gather to celebrate the past

year in Angus I urge everyone to take a moment to think about your past year as well. In any operation or organization, it is beneficial to celebrate our success, consider our shortcomings and most importantly work towards building a stronger future. Where the Angus Breed is concerned, we can do this best when we work as a team. Teams need great leaders but they also need members that support those leaders with ideas, comments, commitment and constructive input. We look forward to that input and to celebrating with you a great year in the cattle industry and the Angus breed.

Panelists - Friday 9am Tom FenwickTom Fenwick was raised on a mixed farm in Saskatchewan, just northeast of Regina. He studied agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, and worked his first job for HRS Herefords in Prince Albert. Tom moved to Alberta to be a programmer for Canadiana Genetics and afterwards worked for JBS Simmentals. The last 15 years have found Tom working for Tongue Creek Ranch, an operation located in 14000 acres of the Alberta foothills. He has been the manager of Tongue Creek for the past eight years. They run about 700 mature cows and are in the process of building the herd to approximately

850 head of all commercial Black Angus cows and purebred Black bulls.

Lyle MillerLyle Miller was born in Calgary and raised in Acme. Through his youth he was active on the family farm and in the Swalwell Beef 4-H Club. Lyle went into post-secondary at Olds College, graduating in Ag. Business. He later took up the family run operation- Highway 21 Feeders. Lyle has been involved in business side of beef industry since 2002 and the production side prior to that. He has a wife and three children.

Rick Wright Rick is an Order Buyer that works for Heartland Order Buying Company. He purchases livestock out of Manitoba and Eastern Saskatchewan for feedlots and grassing operations across Canada and the USA, including Lakeside Feed Yards at Brooks, AB and Dumain du Parc, in QC. Rick is the Executive Administrator of the Livestock Markets Association of Canada and on the executive of the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency.

Fred TaylorFred provides grading services to the beef packing industry in some of the plants in Alberta. He grew up on a family farm near Pierson, Manitoba and has a small cow calf operation there. He still appreciates being referred to as being from Pierson, Manitoba. Fred now lives at High River, Alberta and has some cattle there to look at every day.Fred loves to take part and interact with all aspects of the beef industry - from producers to feedlot operators to the packing plants and on to retail, restaurant chefs and the consumer. At the plants, he tours people from all levels of the industry originating from all over the world. His main passion is for the youth in the industry by teaching 4-H kids and other

farm groups about what the industry and consumer are demanding for the present and the future. His wife never has to look far for him in a grocery store. He is always at the meat counter discussing beef quality with the retailer or a consumer.

Rich VestaRich Vesta, President of Vesta Holdings, is a 47 year veteran of the meat industry. He has worked in nearly every segment of the business and has held executive positions in some of the most prestigious meat companies in the United States including Land O Lakes, Val Agri, Swift, Monfort, and JBS. In 2011, Rich stepped away from JBS to form his own investment company with the goal of applying his experience and techniques to the challenges of a new era, and teaching a new generation of managers how to build a successful business within the beef industry.

SpeakersKent AndersenKent Andersen was raised on a diversified livestock and farming operation in central Nebraska. Following graduation from the University of Nebraska (B.S., 1985) and Colorado State University (M.S., 1987 and Ph.D., 1990), Andersen served as Director of Education and Research (1990 to 1999) and Executive Vice President (2000 to 2009) for the North American Limousin Foundation. During his career, he has been active in various beef industry organizations, including the Beef Improvement Federation, the National Pedigreed Livestock Council, and the U.S. Beef Breeds Council. In his position with Zoetis, Andersen serves as Genetics Associate Director of Global Technical Services. Andersen is active in his family’s commercial cow-calf and farming operation in Nebraska. He and

his wife Wendy, along with ten-year-old daughter Claire, reside in Centennial, Colorado.

matt sutton - vermeulenMatt Sutton -Vermeulen has more than 30 years of experience working in the food chain. Matt helps his clients recognize their opportunities and address their challenges in a candid, practical way. His clients include farmers, fortune 100 organizations, trade associations and start-ups in the agriculture and food sectors. Matt started his career as a hired hand on a ranch in northeast New Mexico, after earning a two-year certificate from the Institute of Agricultural Technology at Michigan State University. He then graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a degree in animal science and has been consulting in meat, milk and eggs for 20 years. He plays soccer for fun and has been married for 29 years to an awesome lady named Suzi. They have two boys in their 20s and a teenage daughter in Ankeny, Iowa.

Deborah WilsonDeborah has spent the last 38 years in agriculture, predominantly the cattle industry, both commercial and purebred. Her work experience has been agriculture related in livestock production, advertising, marketing, sales, and business development. In 2007 she moved to work for Farm Business Communications, a division of Glacier Farm Media. Deborah is probably best recognized for her work with Canadian Cattlemen, the Beef Magazine, Canada’s only national beef publication. She was responsible for business development and was team leader for national advertising sales at Farm Business Communications. She was and still is a strong proponent of strategic industry partnerships, which make our industry stronger and more sustainable. On February 1, 2015, Deborah transitioned to her new position as Senior Vice-President of BIXSco Inc., a partnership formed between Canadian Cattlemen’s Association and Viewtrak Technologies Inc. BIXSco Inc. controls the Canadian voluntary Internet database (BIXS) designed to capture and exchange data linked to an animal’s unique electronic ID tag number which can track both management date up and down the value chain, as well as economic carcass data for producers.

Michelle Miller Michelle completed her Bachelor of Science in Molecular Genetics from the University of Alberta and Masters of Science in Human Genetics from McGill University. During her studies, Michelle partici-pated in a 16-month internship at the Alberta Research Council (currently, Alberta Innovates Technol-ogy Futures) and a one-year student exchange program at the University of London. Previous work experience was in both Canada and the United States looking at various genetic conditions that affect humans. Michelle has recently completed her Masters in Business Administration at the University of Alberta. In her position as Director of Operations at Delta Genomics, Michelle is responsible for the laboratory’s operations, specifically process improvement and optimization, financial management,

customer service, and human resource activities.

john stikaJohn Stika has been the President of Certified Angus Beef ® since 2006 and was with the company for 10 years prior to taking over the President’s position. He completed his BS and MS at Kansas State University and his PhD at the University of Kentucky in Meat/Food Science. Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) is a brand started in the 1970’s when concerned Ohio Angus breeder Harold Etling had a bad steak at a restaurant that advertised “Angus” beef on its menu. He talked to others in Ohio, like American Angus Association Board member Fred Johnson, about how to add value to Angus cattle with a specification-based, high-quality branded beef program. CAB® is a non-profit company that is owned by the American Angus Association and its members and is now the world’s largest beef brand. In 1978 when CAB® officially started, it was new territory for USDA and for cattlemen; all other beef

at that time was commodity. He currently resides in Ohio.

CAA Staff PresentationsKarla Ness - Marketing and ‘yes we can’ -twitter Karla Ness was born and raised in East Central Alberta on a mixed farm with her family. She was a part of the 4-H program for 10 years. After high school, Karla travelled to New Zealand on an agriculture exchange where she milked cows for seven months. After returning from New Zealand, Karla attended Mount Royal University in Calgary in their Bachelor of Communication program. In November of 2014 she graduated with her Bachelor of Communication majoring in Public Relations. Currently Karla works for the Canadian Angus Association as the Director of Member Engagement. Karla has a strong

passion for agriculture and strives to teach others more about the industry.

Kajal Devani - How to read & use EPDs and your zoetis 50k test Kajal Devani is the Director of Breed Development for the Canadian Angus Association. She leads the generation of genetic evaluations for Canadian Angus breeding stock, and identifies and monitors genetic conditions and counsels Association members on the application of genetic tools to balance and optimize healthy herds and economic gain. Raised on a mixed farm in Kenya, she obtained an undergraduate degree in animal genetics from the University of Manitoba, and a Masters the of same at the University of Alberta.

Kajal is passionate about genetics and their ability to enhance production for two primary ends: successful farmers and ranchers, and a memorable dining experience for the beef consumer. Kajal knows that our business, even at its most scientific, is a ‘people’ business; and she is committed to creating value at every level for every participant. Kajal is extremely excited about the opportunity to share information with you during Convention 2015 anticipates learning from you in turn, so bring your ideas and suggestions!

Funny Money CasinoBlackjack 21Object of the game:Player to try to obtain higher total card count than the dealer by reaching 21, or as close to 21, without going over.

Rules:1. MINIMUM BET $500.00, MAXIMUM BET $1,000.00

2. The cards are counted at their face value, with the exception of the Ace, which is 1 or 11.

3. Each player will receive two cards face up. Dealer takes one face up. Dealer takes remaining cards after all players have taken all their cards.

4. Blackjack 21, refers to achieving 21 with two cards. Blackjack 21 take preference over three or more cards totalling 21. If both player and dealer have Blackjack 21, it is a standoff or push.

5. If there is a standoff or push, bets are neither paid nor taken.

6. Splitting pairs;, if the first two cards dealt to a players hand are of the same value, the cards may be split and played as two hands. You must place another bet of the same value as the original bet.

7. Doubling down; if the first two cards dealt to a players hand add up to 10 or 11, you may double down. Place a bet to match the original bet beside the original bet. Only one additional card will be played on the double down hand.

8. Dealer must stand on 17 or better and must draw to 16 or soft 17.

$1000.00 BONUS WILL BE PAID FOR DOUBLE ACES$25,000.00 BONUS WILL BE PAID ON NATURAL BLACKJACK (JACK AND ACE OF SPADES, DIAMONDS, HEARTS OR CLUB

Red DogHow to play:

1. All players and dealer ante into the pot 1st hand and whenever the total pot has been won.

2. Players roll the dies and then make a bet.

3. Dealer roll his die and if he beats player, the player puts bet into the pot

4. If the player wins, he takes the amount he bet out of the pot.

5. If there is a tie, the player pays double his bet into the pot

6. You cannot bet more than is in the pot

7. If you roll a 2 or 3 you usually pass the dice to the next player

ALL BETS MUST BE PAID IN FULL. If you do not have enough money, proceed to the front table and the cashiers will be happy to sell you more funny money to cover your shortfall.
