Mrs. Mahalaris 1st GradeMrs. Mahalaris 1st GradeMrs. Mahalaris 1st GradeMrs. Mahalaris 1st Grade As we are getting close to the end of I Love to Read month, I asked my students about their favorite book and what it was about the book that the loved. Following are their replies. Izzy loves goldilocks and the Three Bears. Sh said, “I usually read it every night. I love it “cause I like fairy tales and I like bears. I actually have four at home.” Abby told me that Time to Sleep, Little Bear was her favorite because “my Aunt Linda gave it to me. I like the pictures and on the second page they have a beautiful sunset.” Tayler likes Scooby-Doo “because it has monsters chasing Scooby-Doo and Scooby’s friends make a trap and catch the monster and take off his mask and find out who it is.” Haleigh said that her favorite book is Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. Sh said, “ I like when the mother monkey tells her kids not jump on the bed and at the end, she jumps on the bed.” Mia likes The Snowy Day. She Explained that the reason she likes it is because “it has pictures of things that I like to do in the snow, like make a snow-man and slide down hills. When I read it I make a lot of connections.” Dylan likes Pirates of the Caribbean “because there are octopuses and sharks. Everybody is a pirate and they are looking for treasure, but sharks are guarding the treasure. At the end the pirates get the treasure, but not before they get attached by a squid.” The rest of my class has fallen in love with The Magic Tree House books, which they affectionately refer to as the Jack and Annie books. Jacob said that his favorite Jack and Annie book is Sunset of the Sabertooth be-cause “there is a sabertooth tiger in it.” While Sean likes the octopus, shark and dolphins in Dolphins at Day-break. Trevor said Midnight on the Moon was his favorite “because it talks about what is on the Moon. It’s

like a learning book” and Clair likes Eve of the Empire Penguin because “they go to the Arctic and get on a bus and meet friends on the bus.” Alex thought that Midnight of the Magic Flute was a great book because “when Jack played the flute, all the animals followed him like the cheetah and the bear.” Jorielle got Lepre-chaun in Late Winter at the book fair and that was her favorite because some of the leprechauns look like fair-ies because they have wings.” Aiden is another student that likes Sunset of the Sabertooth. He liked the part when Jack and Annie go in the cave and see the picture of the reindeer with the owl mask on. Meaghan liked Carnival at Candlelight because she liked that Kathleen made a rhyming book for Jack and Annie. Finally, Jake told me that his favorite Jack and Annie book was Dinosaurs Before Dark. He said, “I enjoyed Dino-saurs Before Dark when you read it to us, so I asked Trevor if I could borrow his to read and ye said YES!” So Epping, if you are looking for a good book to read on one of these cold wintry nights, I have a group of First Graders that have some great suggestions on good reading material. Until next time, Epping !!!

Mrs. Demers 2nd GradeMrs. Demers 2nd GradeMrs. Demers 2nd GradeMrs. Demers 2nd Grade Greetings. Our classroom has been very busy and February brings several special events. Last Thurs-

day the students got a peek at our new Artist-in-Residency, a puppeteer. Today we celebrated Valentine’s Day. Next Wednesday we will celebrate our 100th day of school.

During our reading block everyone has been actively engaged in independent reading. Each student is well on their way to completing our classroom “I love to Read” goal of two books in each of the six genre, and at least one other book in a genre of their choice. This is a great opportunity for students to read books other than fiction.

In phonics we continue to investigate multisyllabic words. Before moving on to my favorite, the conso-nant le syllable type (better known as the “turtle words”), which contains a schwa vowel sound, we will learn about the schwa sound. Red words continued to be practiced through a fun game of relay. Our new units of study will be contractions, then diphthongs. Math is also getting exciting. We will be learning the procedure for subtraction with trading first. New copies of the addition and subtraction algorithms will be sent home. Keep them handy as study guides through out the rest of the school year. Most students now realize the benefit of knowing those basic math facts. One can never practice too much the adding or subtracting of 2 or 3 from any number. With the help of arrays, we will be investigating multiplication and division, which will complete the 1st half of the math curriculum. In unit Seven, we will be looking at number patterns, and finding the median (the middle value of a set of data). Then it’s on to fractions! In our writer’s workshop we are becoming poets! We have written a few poems about the penguins that we have been studying. Then we will try our hand at some free verse about subjects that we feel passionate about. Lastly, please be sure to send your student to school with a change of shoes each day. The play ground areas are wet and sandy. Have a great weekend!

Mrs. Dodge 3rd GradeMrs. Dodge 3rd GradeMrs. Dodge 3rd GradeMrs. Dodge 3rd Grade February is an exciting time of academic growth for third graders. Our students are perfecting their skills and achieving mastery in all subjects. In writing, growth is especially noticeable where students have developed the stamina to write longer quality narrative and expository pieces. Currently Writers’ Workshop compliments Readers’ Workshop, where both include the exploration of nonfiction. In Readers’ Workshop, we are studying the genre of nonfiction where the following nonfiction text features are highlighted: table of contents, glossary, index, headings, bold and italicized print, photographs, captions, maps, charts, graphs, and inserts. Knowledge of these nonfiction text features assists students in accessing in-formation as they conduct their research. Of particular concern, within the genre of nonfiction, is the ability to: skim, scan, determine the importance, synthesizing, and summarizing. In addition, the application of the

Page 4: COOL NEWS 2-12-2010 - SAU 14 NEWS 2-12-2010.pdfJacob said that his favorite Jack and Annie book is Sunset of the Sabertooth be- ... skim, scan, determine the importance, synthesizing,

above skills facilitates success on standardized testing such as the NECAP. Our Writers’ Workshop compliments and extends Readers’ Workshop, where we are in the process of pub-lishing our small moment stories, and then it’s onto expository (nonfiction) writing. Within our unit of ex-pository writing, we’ll explore the following questions: (How do writers use nonfiction resources? What are the structures of informational writing? How do writers decide which information is important? How do ex-pository writers synthesize as well as summarize facts and details?). This unit of study will encompass over a month focused on researching a topic of interest while incorporating the application of the following strategies: inferencing, determining importance, synthesizing, paraphrasing, and summarizing. The culmination of our efforts will be an All About Book which will afford the students the opportunity to highlight their expertise on their topic of choice. In math, we are revisiting and exploring the strategies that unlock a conceptual understanding of the rela-tionship between multiplication and division. Part of our focus will be the mastery of multiplication and divi-sion facts. We practice math facts in the classroom, yet many students are in need of additional practice to achieve memorization. All students have a home set of math fact triangles from which to study. Once these facts are memorized, students are then free to focus on concepts and not left to struggle with computation. Mastery of math facts is especially helpful during standardized and computerized testing, where mastery is as-sumed, with many questions focused on higher order thinking and problem solving skills. Students lacking the mastery of math facts are often left frustrated and challenged to answer these questions. As we conclude our unit of study, A System in the Sky, we will begin our Social Studies unit, Maps and Globes. During this unit the students will identify the: equator, North and South Poles, compass rose noting North, South, East, West, map key, map symbols, seven continents (North America, South Amer-ica, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica), as well as recognizing the United States as part of North America. Consider a library visit over the February vacation. Studies show that library visits are an important part of a child's creative and intellectual growth. Consistent library visits have been proven to encourage a lifelong love of reading. Wishing you a very enjoyable February vacation!

Mrs. Dawson 4th GradeMrs. Dawson 4th GradeMrs. Dawson 4th GradeMrs. Dawson 4th Grade February has been a very exciting month in 4-D! We are underway with our non-fiction All About books! We have worked each week on developing our own pages using books and internet articles for information. We have included a history page, question and answer page, compare and contrast and a “how to” page. We have also learned how to use transition words to provide our opinions in each paragraph. We hope to have these books typed, published and ready to share next Friday before vacation! The kids also can’t wait for me to share my own personal non-fiction books on labs! I have an exciting visitor who is coming in to meet them! In Math, we are working on multiplication. We have graduated from addition/subtraction minute tests to multi-plication facts. Please make sure you are quizzing your child at home on their multiplication facts. Most of the kids are on to the 4’s tables and will need to know up to the 10’s. We are also working on the partial products method to solve multiplication. In Reading, we have finished our unit of making inferences and begun a unit on poetry. We have started with what a poem is and why we read poetry. We are working on creating the images using our senses. We are en-joying sharing out our favorite poems with the class. We are also in the middle of the read aloud, SCAT. The kids are making many inferences while I am reading aloud the text. In Science, we have just finished our unit on bones. The kids enjoyed the owl pellet unit and also making ob-servations on bones. We also learned about the skeletal system and the important bones we have in our body. In Social Studies, we are beginning a unit on life in colonial New Hampshire. We will explore the importance of family life in New Hampshire and how the colonials lived during this time. Please feel free to come celebrate with us while we share our All About books, next Friday February 19th. TBA! Please look for information to come home. Hope everyone has a great February vacation!

Mrs. Young 5th GradeMrs. Young 5th GradeMrs. Young 5th GradeMrs. Young 5th Grade February vacation next week. My how the time flies!

In Reading and Writing, we are finishing our Nonfiction Unit. Students have been reading and writing non-fiction, with an emphasis on the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Each student is writing a nonfiction booklet on one of the Winter Olympic sports where they will exhibit their understanding of nonfiction text characteristics and their chosen sport. Today, students read All About Chocolate, a very interesting and informative nonfic-tion book that explains where chocolate comes from. An afternoon activity emphasized students’ skills at se-quencing and following directions. Yum! Fractions, decimals, and percents are the focus in Math and students will explore the relationships between them. It will be much easier if they have memorized their multiplication facts. Any help from home would be greatly appreciated. The students’ “State Reports” were wonderful. I now have 40+ experts on United States geography. That knowledge will make it easier for students to make connections as we explore the early Americans of North and South America and the various people who led to the “discovery” of the United States. If you have any questions and/or comments concerning report cards, please email ([email protected]) or call the school and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible. I ask you to check the assignment book at least once a week, as it is a “daily progress report” and effective communication tool. As always, thanks for your support and involvement.

Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day!

Mrs. Mayne Technology NewsMrs. Mayne Technology NewsMrs. Mayne Technology NewsMrs. Mayne Technology News Much of computer time in January was used for NWEA testing but students are now back with the regular computer curriculum. Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 are continuing to work on keyboard techniques and stu-dents in Grades 4 & 5 have completed keyboard quizzes. Our main focus, in addition to keyboarding, is to complete our graphing unit based on data the classes collected. The final step of this process will be to create a slide show to explain their graphing process from start to finish. Students in grades 3 through 5 are also us-ing the computer labs to practice basic math facts and explore different websites. All classes are doing very good work!

Harvey Mitchell Memorial LibraryHarvey Mitchell Memorial LibraryHarvey Mitchell Memorial LibraryHarvey Mitchell Memorial Library Tonight PJ Night returns with a “Hearts and Hugs” theme that will get Epping families ready for Valentine’s Day. Beginning at 6:30, pajama night combines stories, crafts and the ever-popular library-wide scavenger hunt into a fun community event for children ages 3-8. Please bring a snack to share. Something that your child likes will probably appeal to the others too! Pajama Night on March 12th will be a PJ Movie Night fea-turing the movie based on Maurice Sendak’s classic story about Max and the many Wild Things he encounters in his imagination. On the third Wednesday of each month The Dusty Old Mystery Book Group meets at 7 pm and is reading Ca-sino Royale by Ian Fleming this month. Copies are available at the main desk for anyone interested in joining in the discussion scheduled for Feb 17th. The Epping Garden Club, with new leadership, is now meeting at the library as well. On Saturday, February 13th this creative group will gather at 11:00 to start getting ready for spring! Whether you’re an avid gardener or just learning you’re invited to help continue a gardening tradition that’s been active in Epping since 1932. For more information please call Debbie at 793-4416. There’s a new Monday Book Club starting this month too. Meeting the 2nd Monday each month, readers have a choice of either 1:15 in the afternoon or 7:00 in the evening. This month’s title is Lark and Termite by Jayne Anne Phil-lips. Copies are available at the main desk for the March 8th discussion. Once again we will be offering the Vacation Movie Series during February school vacation, with a different movie each afternoon at 1:00. Unfortunately, there are not many new releases coming out in time for vacation week, so we are open to suggestions for old favorites or classics that kids would like to see on the big screen. Please let Miss Tracie know what movies you might like to see at the library! Toy Play Day this month will be a celebration of the Chinese New Year with local resident Lin Lin Choy. Be-ginning at 11:30 children can learn traditional paper cutting, try their skills with chopsticks or find out how to do some Tai Chi moves. Ms. Choy will personalize the program for the ages and abilities of the children who attend. For more information about any library programs please call 679-5944.
