Getting to Know Silent Calby Rushad Thomas

Over the course of the last few months I’ve had the honor of further acquainting myselfwith President Coolidge by voicing his words in our audio edition of The Autobiographyof Calvin Coolidge. The Autobiography is Coolidge’s recollection of his youth,education, and years of public service. Coolidge’s gracious New England spirit shinesthrough in the words he penned. My favorite parts of the Autobiography include the humorous anecdotes the Presidentrelates about various items. For instance, in Chapter 2 he tells a story about aparticularly amusing prank students executed at the Black River Academy during histime there. During the night a creature the President describes as "a domestic animalnoted for his long ears and discordant voice” was left for a janitor to discover in one ofthe upstairs classrooms. Coolidge’s words regarding his own culpability in theseshenanigans are too hilarious to exclude: “About as far as I deem it prudent to discussmy own connection with these escapades is to record that I was never convicted ofany of them and so must be presumed innocent.” Such lighthearted narratives convey the President’s warm jocularity. However, it isclear from the Autobiography that President Coolidge took seriously the obligations andduties of public service, and this is why we so admire him. Coolidge’s Autobiographyprovides an intimate look at a man who exemplified all the characteristics of anupstanding servant of the people that we look for today. As part of our effort to bring Coolidge to a national audience, the Board of Trusteesvoted this winter to update the name of our organization to the Calvin CoolidgePresidential Foundation. We have found that inserting the word "Presidential" adds adegree of gravitas that both clarifies our organization's mission and accords toPresident Coolidge the dignity he deserves as our former national leader. No matterwhat our name may be, we will ever remain dedicated to honoring the President'smemory and perpetuating his legacy to a new generation.

Coolidge Presidential Economic Debate



This summer students from the Debate Institutes of Dartmouth, DDI, will be comingto Plymouth Notch on July 8, July 10 and August 1 to tour the Historic Site, learnabout Coolidge and compete in debate. In all, some 225 students from more than 116high schools, plus China, will attend DDI and debate at the Notch.

This is an expansion of last year's successful debate tournament hosted at the Notchin partnership with the DDI and the Bush Presidential Center. The Bush Centerproduced a video of last summer's debate tournament, available below. In the videoyou will see some of the key partners who make this project possible: RobertoSalinasLeon, our international economics instructor, Nicole Serrano, director of theDebate Institutes of Dartmouth (learn more about Nicole below), as well as many of ourdebate judges including David Pietrusza, Gaurav Tiwari, and Amb. Meet Nicole Serrano

Nicole Serrano directs the famous Debate Institutes at Dartmouth, our summer debatepartner. As a high school coach at Lexington High School (MA) and Montgomery BellAcademy (TN), Nicole has coached teams to the top four of nearly every majornational high school tournament including National Forensics League Championships,The Tournament of Champions, Harvard University Invitation and more. She has alsocoached students to numerous top ten speaker awards, including a top five speaker atthe Glenbrooks, Harvard, Emory University’s Barkley Forum, and NFL’s tournaments.

Now in Dallas, TX, Nicole has tripled the number of schools and students thatparticipate in debate in just two years by writing the curriculum used in the 35 schoolsand working handson with nearly 700 students across the school year. Dallas UrbanDebate students have won several debate scholarships and national recognition,including the “Great Space Debate”, a public debate at the Smithsonian Air & SpaceMuseum in 2012. In addition to being a previous member of the Executive Board forthe National Debate Coaches Association, Nicole has won the Bronx ScienceAchievement Award for her contributions to the debate community. She will soon begina new position with the National Speech & Debate Association as their Director ofAlumni and Community Impact. We are excited to be working with Nicole this summerto bring high school debate students to the Notch!

Coolidge Foundation Home School DebateCamp



The Coolidge Foundation is excited to announce our first annual Home School SummerDebate Camp, to be held here at the Notch from July 30 to August 2, 2014. This debatecamp is an exciting opportunity for home school students to learn how Americanhistory and economic principles can help them gain an indepth understanding of awide range of speech, debate, and extemporaneous topics.

Calvin Prize for Vermont Youth

The Coolidge Foundation has established the Calvin Prize for Vermont Youth, awriting prize named after President Coolidge and Calvin, Jr. Writers aged 19 years andyounger currently living in the state of Vermont are eligible to compete for the firstplace prize of $1,500 and the runnerup prize of $500.



This year's Calvin Prize, the second annual, asks Vermont students to think aboutwhat factors will influence their decision to remain in Vermont or move elsewhere whenthe time comes. Furthermore, students are instructed to use Coolidge’s Autobiographyand other sources to address the issues they face and compare and contrast their ownsituation and decisionmaking process with that faced by Calvin Coolidge in his yearsas a Vermont youth.
