WELCOME

Message from the Committee PresidentIt is my pleasure to welcome all sponsors, competitors, spectators and stallholders to the Annual Coonamble Rodeo & Campdraft.

The Coonamble Rodeo & Campdraft is one of the premier competitions on the regional rodeo circuit attracting both national and international rodeo and campdraft champions.

This year the Coonamble Rodeo Association (CRA) has again been inundated with entries in all rodeo and campdraft events. Quality livestock has been sourced from the local area and the CRA would like to thank all cattle donors for their continued support.

The CRA would also like to thank all sponsors, the local community, Coonamble Shire Council, Campbelltown City Council, the ABCRA and Destination NSW for their support and involvement. I would also like to thank all our committee members and volunteers for all their hard work.

All events conducted by the CRA strictly adhere to the NSW Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals Used in Rodeo Events. The CRA is a member of the Australian Bushmen’s Campdraft and Rodeo Association (ABCRA), which is a recognised association under the code of practice.

I wish all the competitors the best of luck and safe travel to all. I hope you have a great time and return again next year.

Len Scott President

RODEO & CAMPDRAFT EVENTS

Bareback Bronc RidingBareback riding involves riding a rough horse without a saddle or a rein. A bareback rider ‘starts’ the horse out of the chutes with his feet over the break of the shoulder. If he misses the start (‘mark out’) he is disqualified. In bareback riding the contestant is judged on his spurring technique. The ideal spurring action is with the rider leaning backwards with his heels starting in front of the horses shoulders.

Team Roping Two ropers- a ‘header’ and a ‘heeler’ work as a team to catch and control a steer. As the steer leaves the chute the header ropes it around the neck, horns or head. The header then turns the steer while the heeler moves in and ropes both hind legs. Improper catches to the head or horns result in a disqualifica-tion, and a five second penalty applies if the heeler only ropes one leg.

Saddle Bronc Riding Saddle bronc riding is a stylised, highly skilled and technically difficult rough stock event. The rider synchronises his spurring in time with the horse’s bucking action. A perfect action, earning highest points, is with feet starting in front of the horse’s shoulder then- with a long sweeping ‘stroke’ – to the back saddle as the horse bucks.

Ladies Barrel RacingThe cowgirl runs a clover-leaf pattern around three barrels and back across the score line. Either barrel, on the left or right, may be taken first, but a contestant will be disqualified for not following the clover-leaf pattern. A five second penalty will be added to the run time for each barrel knocked down.

Steer WrestlingPerfect timing and team work between a steer wrestler and his helper, a mounted ‘hazer’ is the key to fast times in this event. A good horse will be able to ‘rate’ the steer and place the con-testant just right for his leap and catch. It is the ‘hazer’s job to keep the steer running straight and not veer away. Steer UndecoratingSteer Undecorating is the female version of steer wrestling - the cowgirl removes the ribbon attached to the steer’s back. As soon as she has the ribbon, she holds the ribbon aloft to signal her victory to the judge. The cowgirl is allowed a ‘hazer’ to aid her in lining up the charging steer. A hazer is a mounted cow-boy that gallops his horse along the right side of the steer and keeps it from veering away from the cowgirl. If the ribbon falls off the steer, a re-run is allowed.

Bull RideThe judges look for a bull rider using a combination of free arm, legs and feet for balance to keep him in the best body position during the ride. Extra points are awarded for the use of the feet when responding to the bull’s twist and turns to hold the body upright. A bull rider is disqualified for touching the animal or his equipment and bucking off.

Rope and Tie The animal is roped from horseback after being given a head start. The contestant then dismounts and places the animal on its side, tying three of its legs. The contestant must then remount his horse and ride it forward to prove that the tie will hold. If the animal kicks free no time is given for the run.

Breakaway RopingThe ladies breakaway roping is similar to the rope and tie how-ever the competitor is not required to dismount their horse and tie the calf. The contestant is required to give the calf a head start. Once the rope is around the calf’s neck, the roper sig-nals the horse to stop. The rope is tied to the saddle horn with a string. When the calf hits the end of the rope it pulls taught and the string breaks. The breaking of the string marks the end of the run. Campdraft The rider commences their run when instructed to by the judge (positioned on a horse in front of the cut-out yards). There are 7 cattle in the yard from which the rider must select one to work. Separating it from the others, the rider brings the beast to the front of the camp (cut-out) and then calls for the front gates to be opened onto course. The pattern required is very similar to the Barrel Race pattern. 40 seconds is allowed from the mo-ment they leave the camp yard. Judges score riders according to how fast, tight and controlled they negotiate the course.
