As teachers and parents, we continually look at what we can do better; where improvements need to be made, and how we can progress a step further. We sometimes do not clearly see the excellence that is demonstrated on a daily basis. Yet, it is clear that we live and work in an excellent school district and are privileged to work with excellent students. Over the past year at Copley High School, I have seen this excellence first hand on a daily basis and am proud to be a part of this district. As I reflect on the successes and the challenges of the past school year, there is an apparent theme; it’s all about the people. It is not about one person or one group of people; we are an excellent school because parents, teachers, staff, and students are all working together for a common goal: providing the best high school experience for our children. It is due to this collective effort that we have found success over this past year. As each school year ends and another begins, there is one thing that we can always count on, and that is change. Copley High School will have two individuals retiring at the end of this school year. Many times when you ask adults to name those people that had the greatest influence in their lives, they typically share the name of a teacher or coach. Mrs. Good and Ms. Bennett are two educators that have had this positive impact on thousands of students over their careers. Although they will be retiring at the end of this school year, they will forever be a part of Copley High School and be held with great admiration and respect in the memories of the countless students and colleagues that they have influenced over their years in education. We wish them the best of luck in their retirement. To our seniors, congratulations on all that you have accomplished over the past thirteen years. You all have left your mark on Copley High School, and it has left one on you. For this, you can be proud. I have truly enjoyed working with each of you and look forward to seeing all you will accomplish in the future as you begin this new journey in your life. On Sunday, June 5 th , CHS held its 115 th Commencement ceremony. This was truly a day to celebrate the accomplishments of our seniors, and the support and appreciation we have for our teachers, staff, parents and community. At this time, I would like to bring to your attention a couple of corrections to our graduation program. Imani Scruggs, Alexander Stopar, and Kyle Sutter earned an Honors Diploma. These students should have been noted within the program. Finally, it has been a pleasure to work with each of you. We may have worked together through difficult situations or exciting events, yet the key point is that we worked together. By accomplishing this task, we have made a positive impact on our children; thank you! On behalf of everyone at Copley High School, please enjoy the much deserved summer vacation and thank you for another successful school year. I hope your travels are safe, the weather is warm, and you enjoy your time with family and friends. Sincerely, Cameron M. Ryba

I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with you throughout this school year. It has been an honor and a privilege to be part of such a successful year. Congratulations to all of the students for completing another year at Copley High School. I thank all of the parents, students, and staff members for your support throughout the school year. You are the reason that we are able to remain one of the top schools in the area. I am very proud to say that our students have worked to meet our expectations in and out of the classroom. It has been amazing to witness our students’ successes throughout the school year. We are fortunate to have such talented students. Our students’ academic ability, musical talents, theatrical skill, and athletic gifts have been impressive. As a new assistant principal, I could not be happier; I am very proud. I have enjoyed getting to know you and look forward to strengthening our relationship and to working next year to continue to increase school and community pride. Our clubs and athletic teams have been very successful … winning both state and league titles. I could not be more proud of everyone’s efforts! I would like to extend a special thanks and congratulations to our seniors. You and your families can be proud of your journey over the past thirteen years. Continue to strive for excellence; you have been given many talents, so use them well. I look forward to hearing of your newfound success. Good luck to all of you as you begin your next stage in life’s journey. As I begin to prepare for next year, I am excited about continuing the Copley Pride, helping to initiate the Suburban League Leadership Team, and look forward to developing plans to increase student involvement in school activities. Research has shown that students who are involved in school related organizations often perform better academically. I hope to help provide new ways for students to become involved in our school community. I feel that we are fortunate to be part of a top-notch school system and that it is important to help increase the levels of student involvement. Ideally, I would like to know that each student has the opportunity and desire to participate in an organization, team, or activity. As we end the school year, I feel it is important to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer. This time of year provides both staff and students a much-needed break. Enjoy this free time, have fun, try new things, spend time with your family and friends, but most importantly make good decisions and be safe. Have a great summer break! Sincerely, Rick Gurski

Copley H.S. Personal Finance Virtual Business

June 9, 2011

Copley H.S. has two students who have mastered the management of their personal finances over 25 virtual years in Personal Finance-Virtual Business. Peter Weigand managed his virtual life to amass a Net Worth of $2,431,672 and a Credit Score of 735! Ian Gould managed his virtual life to earn a Net Worth of $1,291,850 and a Credit Score of 840! Both earned bachelors degrees, progressed in their profession and invested in real estate. All this had to be accomplished while scheduling a healthy lifestyle and paying their bills. Congratulations Pete & Ian for setting the bar high for future students in the New Career Game! The Personal Finance-Virtual Business software was secured through a grant from Knowledge Matters, Inc. by Personal Finance teacher Diane Dann.

The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) will be given to tenth and eleventh grade students on October 15 at CHS. Students planning to take the SAT should take the 2011 PSAT/NMSQT this October. The PSAT/NMSQT measures verbal and mathematical reasoning and writing skills, making it an excellent preparation for the SAT. The PSAT/NMSQT will provide students with personalized feedback on college success skills that will be tested on the SAT. The PLAN Test will be given to tenth grade students on November 12. The content of the PLAN test is closely tied to that of the achievement tests in the ACT Assessment, which is broadly used for college entrance and placement decisions. The curriculum-based tests cover the skills and knowledge that are commonly taught in the nation’s schools and are judged to be important for success in both high school and college. Tests measure what students know and what they are able to do with their knowledge.

Engraved Bricks The PTSA is currently working to raise funds to purchase a new electronic sign for the high school. The new sign will allow the school to better communicate with students, parents and the community regarding academic achievements, sporting events, band and choir concerts, etc. To reach this goal, we are selling engraved bricks for $100 that will be placed around the base of the new sign. The bricks are a great way to honor a current CHS student or future student as well as a recent graduate. Don't miss out on this chance to leave a lasting tribute at CHS. Please complete the form in this issue of Smoke Signals and return it to CHS PTSA, 3807 Ridgewood Road, Copley, Ohio 44321. Checks should be made out to CHS PTSA. If you have any questions, please contact Jodi Vrabec at [email protected] .

Page 19: Copley High School Smoke Signals...FAIRLAWN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE – Abby Grable, Lexi Gruich, Alyssa Petsche, and Elise Rininger FAIRLAWN CITY WOMEN'S CLUB – Hailey Cornwall,

THANK YOU TO ALL! Saturday, May 28th saw the 2011 CHS After Prom with the high school commons transformed by the theme “Oh the Places You’ll Go”. It is our hope that our seniors and their guests enjoyed this evening of time with friends, casino games, inflatables, a senior photo wall, money machine, prizes, air brush tattoos, food, games, a comedian, and souvenir t-shirt. We hope too that this evening may become a fond memory of their time at Copley High School as they move on to the wonderful places and experiences in the next phase of their lives. This event is the culmination of a year of fundraising, planning, and finally, implementing. None of this would be possible without the innumerable hours from our volunteers and the generous donations made by our senior parents and local businesses. We sincerely thank all of our committee chairs and the LONG list of volunteers. The full list of volunteers can be found on the PTSA website. I thank each and every one of you. I would be remiss to not extend a special thank you to those that were with us for the entire year and always ready to help, sometimes multiple days in a week. Your efforts and time away from your families to create a special evening for all of our students is truly appreciated.

Business Donations The PTSA would like to thank the following businesses for their generous support of CHS After Prom 2011.

PAY IT FORWARD On behalf of the Music Boosters, I would like to personally thank the out going Board for a great year! Many thanks to Karen Martin, Sharon Nagy, Lorraine Signore, Alec Works, Laura Geisendorfer, and Cristine Braman. You have left some really big shoes to fill in the coming year! I would also like to thank the incoming board members and committee chairman for volunteering to fill the shoes of our predecessors! The month of May has flown by and here are just a few of the events that our music students and Music Boosters were involved in:

• Loras John Schissel: Music Director & Conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra Blossom Festival Band, Senior Musicologist at the Library of Congress. Provided a workshop to the Concert and Symphonic Bands followed by a Q&A with students; reception provided by the Music Boosters. The Music Department is looking forward to Maestro Schissel’s future returns and collaborations.

• Band Banquet: A great time was had by all who attended. The Band Council and Senior band members

provided a great evening along with lots of great memories from their fellow students and band directors. The video presentation was great! Thanks to Nancy Klein, et al in the kitchen for a great meal. The evening ended with a performance by Nick Martin and The Whalers.

• Year End Choir and Band Concerts: Held on 5/17 & 5/19 respectively. Both concerts were well attended and the

music performances were great!

• Copley Township Memorial Day Parade: The Copley Marching Indians under the direction of Mr. Foster and Mrs. Smith participated in this parade and ceremony that honored our fallen veterans and current men and women in active duty.

• Graduation June 6th: The Band and Choir students will be involved with commencement. We wish our Seniors

the best of luck in their future endeavors. Upcoming Events: Summer band schedules came home last week with students. YES, the schedules were distributed. Ask your kids! The schedules will also be posted on the Music Booster website soon! Fourth of July Parade: Come out and watch our kids march in the parade in Fairlawn! Our incoming freshman will be marching for the first time! As I end my first letter to the families, students and supporters of the Music Boosters, I want thank you in advance for your time, energy and commitment to our kids. Without YOU, we would not be a successful organization. We will always need volunteers, so when asked, please consider volunteering. I look forward to a great year working with Mr. Foster, Mrs. Smith, Mr. Kochan, Mrs. Cuilla, all the WONDERFUL volunteers, students, families, faculty, committee chairman and board members. Have a Great Summer and see you in August! Yours in Service, Kim Self-Martter, Music Booster President

It's been a great first year for me at Copley. I am happy to report a lot of growth in all my students.

The Honors Biology class just finished an overview of animal systems with a frog dissection as the finale. They have really worked hard this year and I am very proud of them.

My Biological Studies students stepped up to the challenge. They accomplished many difficult tasks and overcame obstacles over the course of the year. So many of them have matured to another level...congrats and job well done! "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."--Confucius

The AP Biology students also have the opportunity to dissect a frog this year. But more importantly, they have tackled a college course to help them prepare for their college experience. I commend them for their tremendous efforts during the course of the year. As Aristotle once said..." We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit."
