Coral Reef Rehabilitation and Management Program III - support to

Coral Triangle Initiative(COREMAP CTI)

COREMAP Phase IIIIBRD: $ 47.4 Mio

GEF Grant: $ 10 MioGOI: $ 5.7Mio

To Institutionalize the COREMAP approach of a viable, decentralized and integrated framework for sustainable management

of coral reef resources, associated eco-systems and biodiversity for the

welfare of the communities in 7 selected

districts

Phase 1: Initiation-pilot phase

EA: LIPI (1998-2003)

Phase 2: AccellerationEA: MMAF

(2004-2011)

COREMAP objective :

to establish viable operational and institutionalized coral reef management system in priority coral reef sites in Indonesia

Establish a viable framework for a

national coral reef management system

in Indonesia

To establish viable reef management systems in at least six priority districts, through a

financially sustainable program that is

national coordinated but decentralized in

implementation

4 pilot sites

IBRD/IDA: $ 6.9 MGEF: $ 4.1 M

7 districts, 358 villages

IBRD/IDA: $ 23 MGEF: $ 7.5M

7 districts and 7 National Conservation Area

IBRD $ 47.4 MGEF $ 10 M

Some Lessons learned (from previous programs)

• Need to adopt ecosystem-based approach• Need to formalize rights of communities• Alternative livelihood activities need adequate

financing, TA and Links to market• Improved surveillance • Marine conservation areas should complement zoning

with management plan• ICM approach should be adopted for reef conservation

New law no27/year 2007 (amended jan 2014) on management of coastal and small islands

Project components

Linkages

• The need to enhance capacity for sustainable management of marine and coastal

• Target national and local/district level

Challenges

• National Focal Point for the program (environment versus marine/coastal)

• Mechanism within the country

• Institutionalise the program

Opportunities

• Sharing lessons learned from previous COREMAP- including co-management, education and public awareness

• Learning network and dissemination

Expectation

• To explore on innovative and best practice to support in particular community livelihood development program ; community right based; ICM application
