Cordant Occupational Health Services provides new worker health screening services by way of a screening questionnaire, or the provision of a full medical focusing on the health potential of an employee. Our screening questionnaire can be delivered as a paper based solution or via our bespoke web based platform.

Many roles can be modified to accommodate the employee if there is a medical problem or disability. Other roles may need a medical assessment to comply with a statutory requirement under Health & Safety legislation e.g. Lead, Asbestos, Confined Spaces.

Under the Equality Act 2010, employers are required, if they reasonably know of an employee’s disability, to make appropriate adjustments to their role and their working environment. A new worker health assessment is the most cost eective way for you to identify cases where adjustments might be needed and thereby to mitigate the risk of an allegation of failure to make reasonable adjustment.

To identify physical and psychological problems which aect the ability of the employee to carry out the employment in a safe and eective manner

To identify those adjustments to employment that may be required to enable the employee to perform the job to the standard required.

To provide a baseline health profile for COSHH and other statutory health surveillance to measure and detect any health changes during employment

To advise whether the Equality Act 2010 is applicable.

The applicant is asked to complete the new worker health questionnaire online. This is then received directly by us. Upon receipt of the questionnaire, we would review it and within 48 hours issue a ‘certificate of fitness’ to theemployer and recommend any action required as a result of the assessment.

Sometimes the candidate may need to be contacted for further information or they may be referred for a face-to-face consultation or medical assessment with the Occupational Health Advisor or Occupational Health Physician. Further information may also be sought from the candidate’s General Practitioner or Specialist.

The ‘certificate of fitness’ is issued as well as advice on any possible adjustments or restrictions that might be considered to ensure that the employee is able to carry out the requirements of the role.

Sickness Absence & Management Referral ServiceIt is widely accepted that a healthy workforce is crucial to the success of any organisation. With sickness absence costing £595 per employee per year (Miller, J. (2013). Absence Management. CIPD Annual Report. P5) many UK employers are now implementing occupational health programmes; which significantly reduce the cost of absence by managing the health and wellbeing of a workforce.

Having access to a Management Referral Service allows businesses to manage employees eectively and take a more constructive approach in helping them back to work.

A Management Referral is when an employee is asked by their employer to attend an appointment with an Occupational Health Advisor or Physician with the aim of a receiving a medical report which will influence a management decision.

There is a legal requirement to ensure that an employer does not put any prospective or existing employee’s health at risk and to make any reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010. Essentially any pre-existing health conditions must not be made worse or aggravated by the requirements of the job. Hence a sensible precaution is for all new employees to have a medical or complete a screening questionnaire prior to starting work or as soon as possible thereafter.

Cordant Occupational Health Services provides specialist Occupational Health Nurses and Technicians to carry out health surveillance to ensure that our clients are cost eectively complying with relevant Health & Safety legislation. This can be onsite or where appropriate at a local osite clinic.

‘Random’ and ‘For Cause’ testing usually applies to those individuals in a safety critical role. ‘Random’ and ‘For Cause’ testing will investigate the presence of Drugs, Alcohol and other substances. A positive result, indicating the presence of these substances could signify, depending on your company policies, that the employee’s ability to perform their role is impaired and could lead to disciplinary action. Employees should be aware that a positive result can occur a long while after the discernible eects of a drug have disappeared.

We are able to be on site within two hours of a request to carry out ‘for cause’ tests on a 24 hour service every day of the year. Results from the tests are available immediately and positive samples are sent to our laboratory for analysis and legally defensible results. Advice and support is oered to management throughout the process.

Cordant Occupational Health Services has a nationwide drug and alcohol testing service with fully trained collection ocers for response to ‘random’ and ‘for cause’ testing requests.

‘Random’ Testing

If employees are undertaking work where there could be a significant risk to health

by drugs, alcohol or other substances then they would be deemed to be in a safety critical role and may be randomly tested for these substances.

We will provide logistical and practical components for either 'Random' or 'For Cause' testing, however the process must be supported with robust policies that inform, protect and counsel the employee in preparation for the test and in the event of a positive outcome.

‘For Cause’ Testing

‘For Cause’ testing is screening or testing for drugs, alcohol or other substances which may be carried out after an incident or accident or if there are reasonable grounds to suspect that an employee’s behaviour is so unusual that there is concern that they are unfit to continue to work and to determine if drugs, alcohol or other substances could be a contributing factor.
