life to all He brings, Ris’n with healing in His wings. Mild He lays His glory by, Born that men no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth.

What Child Is This? What Child is this, who, laid to rest, On Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping?

Refrain:This, this is Christ, the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing. Haste, haste to bring Him laud, the Babe, the Son of Mary.

2. Why lies He in such mean estate Where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christian, fear, for sinners here The silent Word is pleading.

3. So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh; Come peasant, king to own Him. The King of kings salvation brings; Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

Good Christian Men, RejoiceGood Christian men, rejoice With heart and soul and voice! Give ye heed to what we say: News! News! Jesus Christ is born to day! Ox and ass before Him bow, And He is in the manger now. Christ is born today! Christ is born today!

2. Good Christian men, rejoice With heart and soul and voice! Now ye hear of endless bliss: Joy! Joy! Jesus Christ was born for this! He hath opened heaven’s door And man is blessed forevermore. Christ is born for this! Christ is born for this!

Joy to the World!Joy to the world! the Lord is come; Let earth receive her King. Let every heart prepare Him room, And heav’n and nature sing, And heav’n and nature sing, And heav’n and heav’n and nature sing.

2. Joy to the world! the Savior reigns; Let men their songs employ, While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

3. No more let sin and sorrow grow, Nor thorns infest the ground. He comes to make His blessings flow Far as the curse is found, Far as the curse is found, Far as, far as the curse is found.

4. He rules the world with truth and grace And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders of His love.

O Come, O Come, EmmanuelO come, O come, Emmanuel And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here, Until the Son of God appear.

Chorus:Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel!

3. O come Thou Wisdom from on high And order all things, far and nigh; To us the path of knowledge show And cause us in her ways to go.4. O come, Desire of nations, bind All peoples in one heart and mind. Bid envy, strife, and quarrels cease; Fill the whole world with heaven’s peace.

Silent NightSilent night! Holy night! all is calm, all is bright, Round yon virgin mother and child! Holy Infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.

2. Silent night! Holy night! shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar, heavenly hosts sing: “Alleluia.” Christ the Savior is born,Christ the Savior is born.

3. Silent night! Holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace. Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth,Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

4. Silent night! Holy night! wondrous star, lend thy night; With the angels let us sing, alleluia to our King;Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born.

Hark! The Herald Angels SingHark! the herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King; Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!” Joyful, all ye nations, rise, Join the triumph of the skies; With th’angelic host proclaim, “Christ is born in Bethlehem!”

Refrain:Hark the herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King.”

2. Christ, by higest heav’n adored; Christ, the everlasting Lord! Late in time behold Him come, Offspring of the Virgin’s womb: Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; Hail th’incarnate Deity, Pleased as man with men to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel.

3. Hail, the heav’n-born Prince of Peace! Hail, the Sun of Righteousness! Light and

The week after my infant son Paul died, I went to pick up my two-year-old daughter from preschool. No one said a word to me other than “Here she is.” I realize they felt awkward, but the silence was crushing. I barely made it out the door before bursting into tears.

It’s hard knowing what to say when someone has experienced a great loss. Saying “I’m so sorry” feels trite, so it’s easier just to say nothing. But for those who are suffering, silence hammers the hurt even deeper, especially during the Christmas season when the ache of loss is intensified. The weight of tragedies — the death of a loved one, divorce, disease, divided families, depression, and disaster — can all feel heavier at the holidays, as the festivities acutely remind us of what we have lost.

I have buried a child, endured four miscarriages, gone through an unwanted divorce, parented troubled teenagers, and continue to deal with a painful deteriorating disability — so I understand how difficult this time of year can be. While each person and each loss is unique, from my experi-ence, here are five suggestions for caring for those who are suffering at Christmas.

1. Acknowledge the loss.Having someone simply acknowledge your grief can be a gift in itself. Though our suffering

friends may never mention it, the sadness of the situation will be a constant backdrop throughout the season. When we verbally recognize their loss, it shows we notice and care. Our words need not be deep or profound; just recognizing the ever-present reality of their pain can be encourag-ing.

Consider offering:• “I know this season is particularly hard. I wish you weren’t dealing with this agonizing family

situation and all of the fallout.” • “Losing your wife will understandably overshadow everything else that is happening this

Christmas. We miss her too, and we know your pain is even deeper.” • “I’m guessing these health struggles make it harder to enjoy Christmas because you can’t do

the things you loved and did before. I’m so sorry about that.” 2. Adjust your expectations. Our friends who are reeling from loss this holiday may not be able to do things they did in

years past. Since it may be harder to buy gifts, they may not participate in the usual gift-giving. Social events may be too emotionally or physically demanding to attend. Include your friends and offer to go with them to functions, but be understanding if they cancel at the last minute. Suffer-ing people often don’t know what they can do until right before the event.

Also, extend grace when they are down or depressed. Tears may appear unexpectedly and so can irritability. You don’t need to cheer them up, but understand that their emotions may be constantly on edge. The impact of your support and encouragement is appreciated more than you realize.

3. Actively offer assistance.Deliberately look for ways to help, and then offer specific suggestions. It’s hard to follow up

on vague offers, so don’t just say, “If you need anything, call me,” because they won’t call. If you do offer specific support, be sure to follow through. They know it’s a busy time of year, but if you have committed to help, they are likely depending on it.

“Trying to fix people only deepens their grief. Unsolicited advice feels like criticism.”Some things that may be helpful are:• Offer to help with Christmas shopping, decorating, or even gift-wrapping. • Since food is a big part of the holidays, offer to cook or bake something, or even invite their

family for dinner. After my first husband left, it was a priceless gift to be invited to friends’ homes where we were able to form new memories.

• Offer to run errands like grocery shopping, going to the post office, or picking up children from school.

• Keeping their children for the afternoon can be a huge help, giving them time to be alone, rest, or get needed things done.

4. Ask how they are doing without putting them on the spot.Even though everyone at a gathering may know them well and share concern for them, it is

difficult to be put on the spot with more than a few people present — so ask in private. …Regu-larly call or come by to check in with them. The question, “How are you doing today?” can open the door to conversation since it acknowledges that grieving and suffering changes from day to day. It also lets them answer the question without feeling they need to summarize everything that has happened over the month. But don’t ask prying, personal questions or speak in hushed, mournful tones. That often makes people feel uncomfortable, and like a project more than a friend. (Link to whole article: https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/what-suffering-people-wish-you-would-do-at-christmas

What Suffering People Wish You Would Do at Christmas

Desiring God | Contributed by Vaneetha Rindall Risner | December 17, 2017

Page 4: Cornerstone Bible Church December 24, 2017 Welcome ! Prelude Sandra … · 2017-12-21 · 2. Joy to the world! the Savior reigns; Let men their songs employ, While fields and floods,

be a blessing in this coming year.27. Please pray for those who are on

the Associate Pastor Search Committee as they continue looking at candidates; pray that they would have wisdom as they consider various men. Without an Associate Pastor, the existing staff is doing a lot of extra work. Pray for them to understand how to spend their time and focus on the things that are really important.

28. Lorie Steele asks us to pray for the Soul Care Women's Ministry. The annual Women's Retreat planning will be underway soon. Please pray for great attendance, insight for speaker, Julie White, as she prepares her messages to the women, and for lots of vol-unteer help to make everyone's job a little easier. We appreciate the Lord's kindness in providing a wonderful retreat center and making each retreat a time of refreshment for all who attend.

29. The study in Luke for Women In Scripture and Men Of the Word resumes Janu-ary 2/3. The teachers always appreciate prayer for their lecture preparations, and the discussion leaders for time and energy to give to their groups. God is teaching us so much through Luke's wonderfully detailed account of Jesus' ministry. We pray that we will absorb all the insights and applications He has for us.

30. Everett Bracken with the Parkview Christian Learning Center asks us to pray about donating to CORE Foundations so that they may continue to prepare public high school students to become influenc-ers who follow Jesus and have an impact in every area of culture through off-campus, elective Bible classes. These classes meet at CBC during the school year. Pray for the students, that they may see the importance of following Jesus. Pray for the teachers that the Lord will be with them as they study the Word and prepare to share it with the students. Thank the Lord for continuing to bless this ministry, and for allowing it to be offered to students.

= Please pray for Joyce Carlson as she has been moved to her daughter's house with hospice care. Ask God to comfort and strengthen all of her family during this time.

= Please continue to support Doug and Cheryl with your prayers as their days can be challenging and unpredictable because of the multiple myeloma. Pray that they will have the Lord's peace and comfort.

24. Paul Schmidt writes that he has fin-ished his third week in India checking Scrip-ture portions with two teams. He is praising the Lord that they have met their goals, and his time there went well. He is looking forward to being at home with his family in Dallas over the Christmas holiday, and the family is doing well. Paul asks for prayer for his son-in-law, Russell, that he would find a full time job. Russell has been without one since April, and it is wearing on him. Also, pray that Paul will have clarity to make travel plans for 2018 with the Seed Company, as he expects to continue making trips to India every three months or so.

25. Today let's thank the Lord for send-ing His Son so that we can have forgiveness of sins, and eternal life through His Name. Pray for those today who have not heard the Gospel. Pray for those who are mourn-ing the loss of a loved one this time of year. Pray for those who are homeless, who have little to be thankful for—no electricity, wa-ter, heat. Those who have no ability to have a hot meal today, or any meal at all. Thank the Lord for blessing us generously today, and everyday.

26. Deborah Johnson asks us to pray for the Lilburn Co-op. Pray for the staff as they work tirelessly every day. Pray for the stami-na of the volunteers as they meet the needs of the community this season. Pray that the donations exceed the needs, and that the needy will be relieved of some of their stress by what the Co-op is able to donate. Pray that the Co-op will continue to bless, and
