In December, Celeste Wong, Selina Yee, and Stacey Loy Wong from thePink Connection Group organized the collection of 75 shoeboxes for theSamaritan’s Purse Organization (Operation Christmas Child) as well as provid-ed many volunteers to help sort the thousands of shoeboxes at their ware-house in Orange County.

Also in December, we held ourannual Adopt-A-Family program forthe Friendly Center in Placentia. Aspecial thank you to May Quon,Sherrie Fong, and the Red ConnectionGroup for their leadership in collect-ing and delivering all the gifts, mak-ing sure that the family of six weadopted had a wonderful Christmas.Your December Missions donation of$572 was used to purchase items thefamily needs: a baby car seat, a largeset of dinnerware, and other house-hold items we often take for granted,as well as a gift card for groceries. The remaining funds of $153 weredonated to the Placentia FriendlyCenter to help with their ChristmasOutreach Program.

Searching for Shalom

SEE – Pastor’s Corner - Page 3

After being immersed with theChristmas season, it’s good and refresh-ing to enter the New Year with antici-pation of hope and change—andmaybe even with a little “magic” as wetrust God to lead us beyond the chal-lenges of 2015! A classic carol, SilentNight, Holy Night, soothes us with “All is calm, All is bright…Sleep in hea-venly peace.” This refrain reminds meof a poem written by a long-agoacquaintance, Ann Weems, in her bookSearching for Shalom:

I keep searching for shalom, draw-ing my water from one well afteranother—but still I thirst for the show-er of blessing that is shalom.

I keep searching for shalom, butholy places are not magic. Good worksand printed prayers don’t guaranteeshalom.

We often have the longing forshalom but it means so much morethan quiet and calmness. It is morethan just the absence of stress andmuch more than peace. It is a peacethat surpasses understanding. It is apromised gift of God.

We heard a lot about the “magic ofChristmas” but what about the magicof a New Year? I think every seasonand celebration holds its own magic, expectancy, and wonder. This may bewhat happens when you were raisedwith Disney—like me—but work withme here. The New Year of 2016 canbe an invitation to come and fight fordeep magic, but only if you’re lookingand listening for it. C.S. Lewis described

Missions Cont’d from Page 1

Extension 777“Deep Magic” in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe when Aslandescribes his sacrifice— that “the Tablewould crack and Death itself wouldstart working backwards.”

The kingdom of God is floodedwith wonder and magic. It comes inthe form of resilient hope, steadypeace, childlike joy, and unending love.Could anything be more magical? TheNew Year of 2016  says to us, “Come, pause, breathe, and hope.” The ApostlePaul writes: “And the peace of God,which surpasses all understanding, willguard your hearts and your minds inChrist Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)

As we embrace and live in the mir-acle of  a baby King born to bringpeace  and breathe out the clashingchaos, I invite and encourage you totrade in your anxiousness for the won-der of the Savior’s love, freedom, anddelight. Choose to be present to won-der this New Year, and surrender to thedeeper magic of God waiting to be dis-covered. The poem above ends this way:

In the face of Jesus is the peace that passes all understanding, the ever-lasting Sabbath…Shalom!

Grace & Peace, Pastor Jerry ✝

On Nov. 29, 2015, we were fortunate to have theEng Family Bell Ringers perf0rm their beautiful musicduring our Sunday Worship Service.

On Dec. 20, 2015, Cornerstone showed appreciationfor our Pastor and church staff with a love offering andgifts for Christmas.

This year will be full of excitingchanges as Matt, Nick, Karen, Ryan, and myself (Katie) join the Ext. 777leadership team with Jon and Cherylas our mentors. They have done aphenomenal job leading our collegegroup for the past 10 years (since2006!), and we know it is only withGod’s guidance that we can continuethis ministry to which they have beenso graciously devoted.

In December, many of us went tothe Operation Christmas Child ware-house, where we checked the pres-ents to make sure they were safe, andgot them ready for delivery. We alsohad our annual Christmas party! Wehad a fun photo backdrop with props, plenty of delicious food, and tons ofgames including White Elephant,

Word Assassin, Unwrap the Box, anda toilet paper snowman contest!

Recently, Jon and Cheryl askedeach person on the new leadershipteam to lead a Bible study. Karentaught us clear and concise ways topresent the gospel. Matt spoke aboutthe importance of repentance andgave biblical evidence for its necessi-ty. Nick discussed using a sound doc-trine in church and not being feeble infaith. Ryan will be speaking aboutfinding your identity in God in themidst of doubt. And I will be speakingabout the power of prayer. As thenew year begins, we ask that youkeep our college group in prayer withthis transition. We look forward toeverything God has in store for us andfor our church! ✝

He also feeds thehomeless at the same church, everyMonday and other days. "In the past,my hobbies were treasure huntingand looking for antique bottles. I would go to the beach with a metaldetector and find coins, rings, andother jewelry. I saved these foundobjects. The sense of discovery is sofun, you never know what you'regoing to dig up. I also enjoy walkinga great deal. I used to race walk in the70's. One time, I walked all the wayup Mount Wilson."

If Jesus came to dinner, Rogerwould ask "Can I go to heaven withyou right now?" Roger reflected, "I'dbe so surprised, I'd be breathless andspeechless. Instead of a question, Iwould make a statement to Jesus: 'I love you very much.' That would bethe best thing that ever happened tome. I would tell him the things I'vebeen doing to please the Lord. I would not need to show him any-thing, He knows all. Some of myfavorite Bible verses are: Psalms 121:3, 4, God is always with you, he won'tgo to sleep on you, and He's alwayswatching out for you. It gives mepeace, Lamentations 3:22, 23, andJohn 3:16. I also love the Lord'sPrayer. It's shows me how God is try-ing to help us, it's so beautifulbecause of the wording. I say it everymorning." Thank you, Roger, you area gift to our church family. ✝

She is veryfriendly, and the choir she sang inwent to Carnegie Hall. Recently I'vehelped her a lot, accompanying herto doctor visits. I appreciate thefriendship most of all. Forty-seven New Lifers began the holiday season with an early (December 2) Christmas luncheon at the KingLobster Palace in Orange. If seven courses of Chinese food didn’t fill us, there was a feast of fruits and desserts at thehome of Pam and Richard Fitch. What a wonderful way to begin the season in the midst of festive decor and fancydesserts! So much chatter and laughter drowned the announcement of prize winners! Although the spread of dessertswas awesome, the fellowship amongst us far outweighed the food! ✝
