CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE
Every Sunday the children and young people meet for worship in their own groups, joining the congregation for the beginning of the 11.00 am service. The Crèche will be available for children under three years old at these services.
When there is an All Age Service all the children remain in the congregation for the whole service.
Prayer for Teenagers on Sunday mornings during November at 10.30 am in the counselling room led by Alison Boon
This is particularly for parents who have teenagers and would like to have prayer for them or for anyone at church who has a heart for praying for our teenagers.
There is a lot out there in the world that can harm them and we need to engage in a spiritual battle on their behalf.

Letter from the Minister Sandpipers, Southampton Road, Hythe SO45 5AA
Tel: Office 023 8084 5008 & Home 023 8020 7868
Dear Friends,
This month the magazine letter has been written by one of our Elders, Angela Lambert. Thank you Angela.
With best wishes for the month ahead.
This is my first letter since becoming an Elder. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone for your encouragement and prayerful support.
It's getting colder and certain festive items have been appearing over the last few weeks in the shops. Are you looking forward to celebrating Christmas? I know I am, thinking of God's son being born for us in humble circumstances. Of course, Christmas would be meaningless without Easter, when Jesus died for us and rose again. In the coming weeks let's not allow the relentless advertising and commercialism distract us from the true reason to celebrate.
There are many people who worry about money, food, rent and so on at Christmas time. Others may be sad and lonely at this time of year. As we approach Advent let's share the good news with everyone we meet and give them hope. There are many ways as the Body of Christ, we are already helping people in our community and around the world. Giving to food banks, supporting families, the Winter Night Shelter project and praying, are some examples. Let's try and show Gods love in action to as many people as possible in Advent and beyond. Whenever opportunities arise, be kind and generous, sharing our time and resources.
Having just done the “Listening” course it has made me realise even more the importance of truly listening to God and each other. Giving people time to talk and being a good listener is worthwhile.
I have recently read 'No Perfect People Allowed' by John Burke which examines the culture in the church. I found it really helpful on how to live out the message of Jesus in today's ever changing culture. God's Spirit lives in our hearts, we have the power to transform lives, let's continue on with that vision.

COULD YOU WRITE A PRAYER?
You may already be familiar with the United Reformed Church’s (URC) prayer handbook. It's our perennially popular collection of prayers and meditations from prayer writers across the denomination. As in the past two years, we are continuing with our bid to widen
the authorship of the prayer handbook and are once again, inviting prayer writers from every part of the denomination – and beyond – to consider submitting prayers for the 2019 prayer handbook.
There is a general theme – of Seasons of the Spirit – to inspire you – and writers are also particularly encouraged to reflect on the dynamics of praise and lament in the Psalms that feature in the 2019 lectionary readings. Deadline for submissions: 4th December 2017
We hope prayers will come in from all corners of the United Reformed Church and are actively encouraging prayer writers of all ages, all traditions, all nationalities, to submit prayers for possible inclusion in the 2019 handbook. If you write prayers, write one for us!

Matthew 5 v 13-16 reads: “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Let's go out and be the salt and light in our community.
Angela Lambert

THANKS
I want to stand up and say A VERY BIG THANK YOU to the many ladies and gentlemen who go out of their way to make the running of our church such a success. When you build a house to live in you go to great lengths to get it comfortable and make it special. Cornerstone would not be like this without those who give their time to help and organise the running of it. No names, so many people do small things and together, they make a big difference. Thank you to you all.”

GOOD NEWS FROM FAMILIES MATTER
We would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who supported our blue token scheme at Tesco in Hythe, Blackfield and Applemore stores.
We received over 20,000 votes and came a very close second to Hythe Youth Club in the overall counting between the three stores. This means we should receive a substantial sum towards the cost of running our very popular parenting courses.
As a result, we plan to run another course here in the church starting on Thursday 9th November. This will be called 'Managing your Child's Angry Feelings' and if anyone would like to book a place on this course, please call us at Families Matter on 02380 207623 as soon as possible as the places are filling up fast!
We still need another volunteer for our Women’s Group on Friday mornings.
Thanks to everyone for their support.

MINCE PIES FOR CHRISTMAS
As always, we plan to provide mince pies for the Salvation Army Band Christmas concert on 25th November, the Christmas Fayre on 2nd December and the Carol Service on 17th December.
This year we are asking people to put money in a mince pie collection box instead of buying mince pies. So please can you be as generous with your pennies as you were with boxes of pies in previous years.
The box will be on the foyer bar from the beginning of November and will be clearly marked “MINCE PIE DONATIONS.”
Many thanks, Bev Hall

BOYS' BRIGADE
During September it was good to welcome some new members and also James Willett, the Youth Worker. It was lovely to see Bill Irwin on the Monday following his 90th birthday. He brought along some birthday cake which we all enjoyed. Thank you Bill. In October we invited Jean and Ken Young along. Jean has been our
treasurer for many years and has now decided to step down. The boys presented her with some flowers and a card. Thank you Jean for all you have done for us and thanks to Joan for taking over as treasurer.
Over the last few weeks the Anchors have tidied our border and planted some Tulip bulbs and Sweet Williams. The Juniors have made pizza baguettes. We joined with the Girls' Brigade for the Harvest Parade Service. Well done to all the boys who took part. At the time of writing, Steve and Jake are in Sierra Leone, we look forward to hearing all about their trip when they return.
Gill Tabenor Officer in Charge
The picture shows some of the boys at Boys Brigade as they said a big thank you to Mrs Jean Young when she retired from being Boys Brigade treasurer after 17 years. This is longer than the boys have
been alive of course! Eddie Boon

This will be the last Open Doors this year as it has been decided not to meet in December because of so many

These get-togethers are ideal for those who may find themselves alone on a Sunday afternoon and also for others who would welcome the company of a fun social time, sharing together and forming new friendships.
Why not come along and enjoy some tasty home-made cakes with a nice cup of tea or coffee. We would love to have your company and would give you a warm welcome through our ‘Open Doors’.

ONE WORLD
THE GOD WHO RESCUES
A transformational ministry to children and mothers in Bangalore
Printed by permission from Barnabus Aid magazine
Divya Shanthi is a place where the peace of God is present, where His shalom brings healing and wholeness to young lives in the midst of poverty, squalor and deprivation. Here, babies are rescued from certain death, children educated, young girls saved from the sex trade, mothers trained and enabled. How aptly it is named “Divya Shanthi”, meaning God’s Peace.
All this has developed in the downtrodden Lingarajapuram district of Bangalore in southern India over a period of four decades thanks to the courage, vision and dedication of one Indian Christian couple Colleen and Vinay Samuel.
Baby Home – Saving the Child Sacrifices
In November 1977 a huge tidal wave hit the cyclone-prone east coast of India. The 15-metre high wall of water came several miles inland and killed an estimated 50,000 people. After this, giant waves began hitting the coastal fishing villages far more frequently and regularly destroyed many homes. The fisherman sought the help of local Hindu religious leaders, who told them that the sea gods were angry and should be appeased by sacrificing baby girls. In 1978 the first babies were left on the seashore in baskets, placed so that the rising tide would carry them away.
Miles inland in the city of Bangalore, where she worked with street children, Colleen Samuel heard a report about the child sacrifices. She sent her colleagues to the coast late one night, where they rescued 21 babies from the seashore and took them back to Bangalore. Some of the fishing community helped the Samuels with their rescue work but religious community leaders opposed them and threatened violence.
So started Divya Shanthi’s Baby Home, Many other babies were rescued over the coming years. Some of the local farmers, keen to please the gods and get a good harvest, would leave babies usually girls) on the riverbank, lying on large leaves or in baskets, so that the

THANK YOU
Heather Bowers would like to thank Eddie and the Church Fellowship for lovely colourful flowers delivered to her during a difficult time in October. Thanks also to Kerry and Jenny who delivered them and chatted with such compassion and understanding, which helped me to start the week more positively. Thank you so much. There are such loving friends at Cornerstone who just know sometimes when you need them. Praise and thank The Lord for them. Gill Lever writes: “To Eddie and my Christian friends, thank you all for the lovely bouquet of flowers. Your thoughtfulness is a gift I will always treasure. All I can say now is that I am grateful and blessed.”
rising river would float them away. All the rescued babies grew up to know and love the Lord Jesus and some are now serving Him full-time.
The Vital Link
Divya Shanthi started when Vinay and Colleen reached out from one part of India to another to rescue the babies on the seashore. But how did they hear about this need? The main newspapers in India were silent about the fishermen/s child sacrifices. The vital link was not in India but far away in the Netherlands where a Dutch newspaper carried a report about the babies being sacrificed to stop the tidal waves. Perhaps a story about keeping the ocean back was of special interest in a country where 26% of the land is below sea-level.
Just at this time, a recently widowed Dutch Christian called Anky Rookmaaker was asking the Lord what she should do with her life now that she was on her own. The Lord answered by calling her to set up a ministry called Redt Een Kind (Help a Child), which was soon supporting over 10,000 children in India and Africa,

COUNTRYSIDE AND CLOISTER by Marie Litchfield
A few years ago, Anne Sanders and I were helping in the crèche at church. In conversation, we discovered that although at different times, we had both been pupils at the same convent school in Glastonbury. Earlier this year Anne offered me a book that she thought I might like to read. Whilst she was at the convent, she had been good friends with its author, Marie and stayed with her family at Ashcott. Marie went on to become a Carmelite Nun and wrote her autobiography, which Anne has given to me to read and pass on. The book was a delight, more so because of the personal links with the school and the area. This extract which comes near the end, touched my soul so deeply that I felt led to
share it with you all. Audrey Edmonds “I am growing older now; the energy of earlier days has mostly slipped away, except for little occasional unexpected moments of youthful vigour, brief as an April shower, swiftly come and gone yet bringing refreshment. I’m getting rather deaf; but with a little National Health assistance I can still hear the cry of the curlew as it rises from the bank of the River Wharfe on a May morning, and wings its way high above the garden. The robin’s song, and the chiff-chaff in summer with its monotonous little voice that somehow always seems full of enthusiasm - all the wild birds still give me great joy. I hope I shall be able to hear them for a little longer; but even if I can’t, I’ll still know their music in my heart.
I still know where to look for the first celandine in spring, and which part of the woods the wood-anemones will clothe the earliest. These are things we share; they go right to our roots, and are part of our lives. I sometimes see wild swans fly over, and remember the ones that nest beside the rhines on the moors of Somerset. I feel akin to them, and love to watch the sweep of their strong wings. I can still see quite well, thank God, and am able to appreciate more than ever before the wonders of the ever-changing world of nature around me. People say to me: ‘Isn’t it dull, staying always in one place? You must know every stick and stone’. But of course nature isn’t like that - every day it is new, every day there is more to discover, to explore, to gaze upon with amazement and wonder. Even the longest, strongest life-time would be far too brief to allow one to lift more than a tiny corner of the veil and see the exciting treasures hidden in one patch of garden or woodland - not to mention the wild creatures that pass through it, or the wonders of the skies above.”

Angela and Tony Steele write: “Thank you so much for the beautiful flowers we received on Angela’s return from Girls’ Brigade camp. God bless you.”
Gill and Lawrence Tabenor say: "Thank you for the Church flowers we received on the first anniversary
of Dad's death. They were very much appreciated. Thanks also to the Pastoral Team for their lovely card.”
Diana Sandy would like to thank Eddie and all her friends at Cornerstone for the flowers, cards, prayers and best wishes she received following the death of her mother at the end of September. They were a great comfort.
Edna Phillips writes: “Thank you very much for the card. It is lovely to know that my mother, Helen Holm is remembered. It is always a difficult time for any family, so thank you ever so much.”
Rosemary Wilson would like to say thank you very much for the surprise gift of flowers which was very much appreciated and thank you Anne for delivering them.”
Dorothy Carr writes: “Many thanks for the lovely flowers from the Church. They brightened up a miserable day.”
Anne Gale and Charlie say thank you for the lovely flowers. It has been a very trying time for us both, the flowers were most welcome and brightened our day.”
Pat and Peter Dudley write: ‘Once again we would say “thank you” for the church flowers we received from Cornerstone after Peter’s “Mini Op” on his leg which is now healing well. We are so grateful for the concern and care shown through receiving flowers and Barbara’s cheery visit.’
Bill Irwin says: “I would like to thank the members of my homegroup for arranging a party and Eddie and friends at Cornerstone for the flowers. Thanks also to Anne for delivering them. It made my 90th birthday one to remember.”
Eleanor Clarke says: “Thank you so much for the beautiful flowers I received from Cornerstone. They were a lovely surprise.”
Mike Burman writes: “Thank you for the lovely flowers that were left for me on 9th October, what a wonderful surprise they were. Thanks also to the person who delivered them.”

Teams of volunteers will manage the Shelter. All volunteers will need a reference either from their Church Leader or a professional person. They will have to attend two half day training sessions and agree to work in accordance with the Policy documents/code of practice.

PRAYER POINTERS FOR NOVEMBER
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit - and surely I am with you always to the end of the age.” Matthew 28 v 19 - 20
Our Daytime Prayer Group meet on Monday mornings from 10am - 11am. All are welcome to join us.
At our Homegroups we pray for each other, for our friends, our church, and for any situations local or worldwide that are on our hearts. If you would like to be part of a homegroup please speak to Jan Sherlock.
At our occasional Sunday evening Prayer & Praise Services we focus our prayers on particular issues relevant at the time, praising God and bringing our prayers to the Lord.
During our Sunday morning services Intercessions are led by members of our congregation. If you would like to lead the prayers one Sunday please speak to Jytta James.
There is a Prayer Board in the Foyer where you can post requests for Prayer and Thanksgiving which will be brought to our Daytime Prayer Group on a Monday morning. Please feel free to add your prayer requests to the board where we can all see them and join you in prayer.
Why not keep this prayer sheet with your Bible

IN NOVEMBER PLEASE PRAY FOR:
1st – 4th
“God is our shelter and strength a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46 v 1
Pray for those who need to know that He is always there and can help in all circumstances:
in your family
in your circle of friends and contacts
your neighbours
in your workplace, school or college
in the community
in the nation
in the world
5th – 11th
“The Lord is near those who are discouraged, He saves those who have lost hope.” Psalm 34 v 8
Pray for all who are discouraged or have lost hope:
rough sleepers and the Waterside Night Shelter project
long term unemployed men and women
those known to you with serious health problems
those who are struggling with difficult relationships
12th - 18th
“There is surely a future hope for you and your hope will not be cut off.” Proverbs 23 v 18
Pray for those who have been:
35
victims of terror attacks
survivors of the devastation of recent hurricanes
escaping persecution from Myanmar to Bangladesh
surviving in third world countries, without enough food
clean water, shelter and healthcare and for God's provision
19th – 26th
“What strength do I have, that I should still hope?” Job 6 v 11
Pray for those known to you who need this question answered.
Ask God to give you wisdom as you seek to share the Gospel message with them.
Pray for wisdom and compassion for all who seek to share this message in their daily lives.
Ask God to fill you daily with the Holy Spirit and power as you witness to His strength and love in all situations
27th – 30th
“Be strong, be courageous all you that hope in the Lord.” Psalm 31 v 24
As we approach Advent and the coming of Jesus, reflect on what this means to you, what a difference Jesus has made to your life, and with whom you might share this.
Start praying for the opportunities that God is giving Cornerstone during the season of Advent and Christmas.
Ask God to bring to your mind names of those known to you whom you might invite to an event.

HOPE's dream is a growing church, showing Jesus' love and
telling the Jesus story at the heart of every community
IN CHRIST ALONE
In Christ alone, my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song:
This Cornerstone, this solid ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My comforter, my All in All,
Here in the love of Christ I stand.
In Christ alone, who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save.
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live.
