PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Another season has come and gone and while there have been many challenges on the senior front, it has been another inspiring year by the juniors at Coromandel Valley Ramblers. We have had more kids than ever play for our club and the addition of an u15 team has been a huge success with the boys winning a premiership in their first season. Congratulations to Dave, Richie and all the boys on a fantastic season.

Three seasons ago we began our junior program by running Milo In2cricket sessions and found we had enough kids to form an u11 team. Last season we managed to run an u9, two u11s and two u13 teams. This season we added the u15s and are considering fielding two of these from next year. The growth has been incredible and it relies on the kids enjoying themselves and recommending our club to their friends.

This has not been possible without the hard work of many people, some of whom are individually mentioned elsewhere in this magazine. I would like to thank all the junior coaches for their efforts in coaching the teams. It cannot be underestimated the commitment these people make by coaching all trainings and matches for a full season. Further assistance from assistant coaches, scorers & umpires completes the volunteers needed just for the kids to play and I thank them all for their efforts.

On the senior front it was a difficult season with the loss of a few key A Grade players from last season and several B Grade premiership players. This tested the depth of the club and while we may not have seen success in playing finals in any team, it was pleasing that we managed to field 4 teams despite significant player losses. It was also fantastic to see the involvement from senior players with the junior trainings, particularly for the u15s. I would like to thanks our captains – Justin Calderbank, Ben Brown / Glen Rosie, Brett Chilton and Marty Wagner for their efforts in putting together 4 competitive teams. I would also like to thank our Senior Director, Andrew Strunk, for his commitment to both coaching juniors and the

numerous phone calls and selection headaches he achieved this season. I wish Andrew all the best in his recovery from his difficult hip surgery.

I expect two significant changes for the senior teams next season. Firstly, I am in discussions with a current coach of a club in a similar competition to come on board as a player coach for the Ramblers. This would bring a structured program to our trainings and take the workload of the senior director for organising trainings. I hope to have some positive news on a coach by the AGM. Secondly, we have 7 boys in u15s who will be ineligible for u15s next season and they have voted unanimously to play senior cricket next season. The prospect of young players moving from juniors into seniors from next season has inspired us to establish a junior team in seniors that will bridge the gap between the two competitions. We would like to make the move into senior cricket as easy as possible for the boys as it is often a daunting prospect, so allowing the boys to continue to play together in seniors should assist with the transition. Expect to see many more junior players coming through to senior cricket in coming seasons.

In other club matters it was pleasing to see support from both seniors and juniors at our club quiz night and I hope that will only increase in coming seasons. The Quiz Night is our major fundraiser for each season so your support is important to the club. Also, after a long and arduous process of gaining council approval, dealing with neighbours and somewhat reliable tradies, we managed to complete our new cricket nets. This was important for our club to ensure we have adequate facilities to cope with the additional teams we have

and will need in the future. The new matting may be a little bouncy but it is designed to be the same surface as Hawthorndene and should settle down in time. Glen Rosie has arranged sponsorship from Jeffries Nurseries who will apply top soil to create a nice grass cover around the new pitches over the winter.

I would to acknowledge the support of our sponsors who provide more contributions to the club than ever before. Our major sponsor was again Kevin O’Looney of Skyworld Contractors. If you are considering any roof glazing products or café-style blinds please give Kevin the opportunity to quote on your job. We now have many happy club members who have utilised Skyworld’s services. Our new Junior Sponsor for the season was Paul Davy on behalf of Cundall who are specialists in environmentally sustainable building solutions and the Seaford Hotel came on board through Ryan Ward as our seniors sponsor. Further sponsorship of our BBQs came through free bread from Blackwood Bakers Delight and weekly meat trays for raffles from the Blackwood Butcher. As always Steve Davenport and Paul Durham of Promotions R Us sponsored our Quiz Night with further donations from Champs Sports in Blackwood. Details of all sponsors are on flyers at the Presentation night and the club website.

The club committee members need to be acknowledged, beginning with Jarrad Benson as treasurer. Jarrad has again managed the funds of the club while securing more grants and assisting with many other tasks including a great deal of work on our new shed and nets. His success in securing grants allowed us to construct our new facilities. Glen Rosie came on board after the mid-season break when we sent out a SOS for more help. He has managed our functions superbly, even when he couldn’t attend the actual event. Andrew Strunk was mentioned earlier but I thank him again for assisting both juniors and seniors and I hope we can reduce his workload next season to allow him to successfully recover from major surgery. I would like to especially thank Jenny Buersch for the tremendous effort she has put into our juniors this season in her first year as Junior Director. It was never going to be an easy task to step into the shoes of Ashley Bryant who dedicated more time to the club than anyone before him. However Jenny hit the ground running and, with some early help from Ashley, she managed the entire junior program with no issues yet we had more kids than ever. Her hospitality with committee meetings in her home reminded us of years gone by in David Neil’s home and I sincerely hope she continues in her role in coming seasons.

Finally, I would like to thank you for your on-going support of our club and remind you that if we are to continue to grow and succeed we need to fill our committee which currently has some vacancies. We always welcome feedback so that we can improve and I ask that anyone who would like to become more involved to make themselves known to myself or any committee member. Cheers, Matt Smith

As you are all aware this is my first year as a Junior Coordinator for the Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club. Although I was on the Junior Committee last year taking on Junior Coordinator has been quite a challenge and it has also been very rewarding in seeing the improvements through the club and also on the field. Although I haven’t been to support every team due to having children

of my own, I have seen the results and watched them train to see there has been a vast improvement by all the children involved. With every team from Under 9’s to Under 13’s winning at least one game during this season to where the Under 15’s were undefeated all year and not to mention the Under 15’s winning the Grand Final, well done to everyone. The 2011-12 season, showed even more of an expansion with the junior program at the Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club. In 2009-2010 we only had one Under 11 side and now to date we

have one Under 9 side, two Under 11 sides, two Under 13 sides and one Under 15 side. Once again we also ran the Milo In2cricket program and although the numbers were down this year compared to other years, the program was a great success. We had some of the kids from Milo In2cricket playing in the Under 9 competition which was great to see. The seniors have been very supportive with the Milo In2cricket program and also with some of the junior training nights. Due to the junior committee dissolving quite a few of the decisions had to be made by the club committee and also by conversations with parents which has delayed some events etc. However there were three parents that raised

their hands to help me where I needed it the most. A special mention must go to Sharon Hunkin, Garry Handke & Gary Croft for all their efforts in helping me by taking on the leg work in picking up meat and bread for BBQ’s and organising everything on the nights of the BBQ’s. They also helped by consulting with schools around the local area and passing out leaflets to help build the junior program even more. Thank you for everything you have done to make my job easier. Obviously without the support of volunteers, it would be

very hard to run a junior program. I wish to extend my thanks to all the team coaches, their day to day volunteers such as the scorer’s, team managers and umpires and also everyone else who has helped out whether it has been on a BBQ, completing set up or helping set up our events such as the Quiz Night.

A special mention also needs to be made to our junior sponsors, as without them, the fees and charges for many of these club programs would be much higher. Once again, Kevin O’Looney from Skyworld Outdoor Blinds

provided the major sponsorship for the club and our new sponsor, Paul Davy from Cundall providing the major sponsorship for the juniors. In addition, other junior sponsors also provided goods and/or services to the club across the year, including Blackwood Butchers, Bakers Delight at Blackwood, Joan’s Pantry, Champs Sports in Blackwood, Promotions R Us, Seaford Hotel plus many others, for which we must all be thankful for. Since they have helped support the club, I would urge everyone from within and near, each family to consider using their services. Although there has been a few little problems during

this season, I believe that all of our members including players, parents, volunteers and spectators can hold their head up high and be proud of being part of such a great club and I hope to see you all back again for the 2012-2013 season. If anyone is not returning next year I wish you all the best in your new activity and remember that you are always welcome back to Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club. I hope that each and every one of you has enjoyed the 2011-2012 season at the Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club. As a club, I hope that we have helped develop your cricket game further and provided you with plenty of opportunities to socialise and to make new friendships. I wish you well in your winter activities and see you in September. Jenny Buersch Junior Coordinator

TROPHIES AND AWARDS 2011/12 A.R. BENSON A GRADE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Congratulations to Justin Calderbank on winning the A Grade Player of the Year. This represents the second time Justin has won the award during his 5 year tenure as skipper of the A Grade after finishing runner up on two occasions. In another close count Justin has finished on 12 votes and beaten Jarrad Benson by two votes and Matt Smith by three. This season JC has continued with his accurate “stump to stump” bowling that challenges batsmen’s concentration and has taken 28 wickets at an average of 16.6. While his batting was somewhat inconsistent he did play some important knocks when the team needed it most. He finished with 152 runs at 13.8. Well done JC on another great season!

PLAYER OF THE YEAR Well done to Simon Billett after polling 14 votes to win the Player of the Year award for 2011/12 by 2 votes from Scot Brodie, Justin Calderbank and Kingsley Smith. Simon proved to be the backbone of the D Grade team this season and it was no coincidence that the team struggled in his absence in the later part of the season. Simon accumulated 374 runs at the astonishing average of 74.8 in only 7 innings and took 16 wickets at only 13.5 which is a remarkable season by anyone’s standards. It is more remarkable that he only played 9 games in achieving this. Well done Simon and we hope we get at least 11 games plus finals from you next season.

GLEN WATCHMAN CLUBMAN OF THE YEAR This season’s winner of the Glen Watchman Clubperson of the Year is our first ever female recipient and is someone who may not be familiar to many of the senior players in the club – Jenny Buersch. Jenny is our Junior Director and has filled the shoes of Ashley Bryant since his departure for WA. She has not only run the entire junior program this season but added an extra team in the form of u15s and without the assistance of a junior committee. The behind the scenes work to run 6 junior teams, organise & collect fees from 85 junior players & 30 milo kids, plus heavy involvement in social functions including the quiz night, is immense. She also almost solely ran the junior presentation night which featured over 230 juniors and parents and she has assisted with the senior presentation night behind the bar. Clubs do not survive without dedicated helpers like Jenny and we urge you to say hello to her and offer her your assistance in the future. If we can assist her with some of the many junior we may be able to keep her involved for many years to come! It is no coincidence that the winners of the last 3 awards have come from involvement with juniors as much work has been put into developing the kids and we thank Jenny for all the hard work this season and hope the award goes some way to recognising her dedication.

Well done & thankyou Jenny!

HAYDEN HILL MOST PROMISING JUNIOR For the first time in the club’s history we have junior cricketers who will move from juniors into the senior ranks next season. This provides us with a huge pool of talent from both the younger seniors to the u15s and ensures a difficult decision in choosing the Most Promising Junior. The winner of the award had an outstanding season in the u15s, particularly with the bat and clearly stood out as our most promising junior cricketer. James Baird is the winner for 2011/12. James made 301 runs from 11 innings at an average of 60.2 for the season, including an important 50 in the grand final against quality opposition. In fact, James would have scored many more runs had he not been required to retire after reaching 50 on numerous occasions. He has also taken 13 wickets from 29 overs at the measly average of 8.0. He also dismissed one of the key district batsmen from Morphy Parks in the final with a great caught and bowled that can be seen below. James also ventured down to Sturt to help out when they were short in the u16s and managed to top score with a 40 in a depleted team. No doubt they have their eye on him. We wish James all the best for his cricketing future and will gladly have him play for the Ramblers as long as he so desires. Well done James!

DAVID FERRIS MOST IMPROVED PLAYER The David Ferris Most Improved Player for the 2011/12 season has been awarded to Colin Farrell.

Colin has only joined the club this season and hails from the beautiful part of the world known as Cherry Gardens. He was attracted to the D Grade this season to join the likes of Judd Brumby and Daniel Hayes as key recruits to Marty Wagner’s side.

Colin’s first game was in round 2 and showed early promise with some pacey, yet inconsistent, left arm swing bowling. His figures in his first game were 8 overs 0/33. By his second game he started taking wickets while was still rather expensive with figures of 5 overs 3/41. However, from that point on he continued taking wickets consistently and the run rate dried up as his line and length improved. In fact, Colin went on to win the D Grade bowling trophy with 26 wickets at the impressive average of 17.1. This is a fantastic improvement in form and fits the criteria for this award perfectly.

Left arm pace bowlers are valuable in the game of cricket and Colin has a bright future bowling for the Ramblers. Well done Colin!

DUCK CLUB

It has certainly been a fantastic season for all the duck enthusiasts at the Coro Ramblers. With 64 ducks this season (compared to 50 last year) one would assume we have lost our way with the willow. This may be disappointing for those who enjoy winning, but there are many of us at the Ramblers who are in awe of blokes who successfully fail to get off the mark.

One such gentleman achieved this feat 3 times this season. That is a fine effort, but what makes it remarkable is that he did this in 3 consecutive innings in rounds 2, 3 & 4. In fact, he didn’t bat in rounds 1 and 5 and didn’t score a run until round 6. This is the sort of form that duck club legends are built on and for that we offer the Captaincy of the 2011/12 duck club to Caleb Blesing. Congratulations big fella!

It was a tight race for the vice-captaincy duties, with 8 other players also achieving 3 ducks. However, Angus Fisher elevated himself above all other by also scoring 3 consecutive ducks in round 8, 9 & 10. This would have been captaincy material had his form be as consistent early, but with 24 runs before Xmas he falls just short of Caleb. Nevertheless, with only 32 runs in total, Angus has done us proud in his first season and we can rest assured that he is truly duck club captaincy material for the future. .

The other positions were well contested but after due consideration the line-up is as follows:

Karl Gill is unlucky to not be in a captaincy role after scoring 3 ducks from only 6.5 games and will open the duck club batting in his usual buccaneering style. It makes those of us in the Duck Club proud to know that a batsman who clearly has much talent prefers to test fieldsmen by hitting the ball as high as possible from ball 1. This ensures regular appearances in our most coveted team.

Joining Gilly as an opening bat will be Leigh Porter who also achieved 3 ducks this season. Now Leigh is not a typical duck club member, he prefers to grind an innings out and never likes to give up his wicket. This would normally omit a player from duck club selection. However it seems that Leigh’s batting form was bad enough this season that no matter how long you grind out an innings, you still have to get off the mark in the first place.

At 3 will be a fellow whose form was so poor early that he had only 10 runs to his name from 5 games at a beautiful average of only 3.4. Josh “Archie” Haussen was at one time thought of as a number 3 batsman but

Page 12: Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club – Fun, competitive ......Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club. I hope that each and every one of you has enjoyed the 2011-2012 season at

oh how he proved us wrong for much of the season. With 2 ducks from his first 3 innings and another in round 8 for good measure, he lost his way more so than Bubbles driving home from the Blackwood Footy Club. Striding to the crease at 4 is a favourite son of the duck club whose long term duck form warrants immediate selection. Andrew Strunk has carried on last season’s impressive Duck Club captaincy with another two ducks this season which puts him a class above of many others. Given Strunky’s recent health issues we are sure there will be plenty more ducks to come whenever he manages to pick up a bat again.

Our no. 5 has not featured regularly in the team before but with 3 ducks, including the last two innings of the season, Andrew Work is showing great promise for future inclusion. Andrew also managed to carry his form between the grades with a duck in As in round 10 followed by a duck in the Bs in round 11. It is always pleasing to see a player go down the grades to find form, but find none.

From no. 6 the batting stocks really disappear and it is no surprise that the duck club features a long tail. With 3 ducks from 4 games in the middle of the season Judd Brumby has shot to fame in only his first season. In fact, he could have had 4 from 4 and shot straight to Captaincy if he was given a bat in round 5. We will blame Marty Wagner for that but all will be forgiven between the two over several scotch n colas at training.

Though his years may be few, Sam Davenport has proven to be a true stalwart of the Duck Club in recent years and again commands selection with 3 ducks. Davo will come in at 7 for a brief, but entertaining innings. Entertaining not far some classy shots, but the impressive way he will find himself dismissed. Indeed Sammy is one who believes the boundaries are there to be cleared but unfortunately for him they rarely are.

Our no. 8 has achieved two ducks in each of his first two seasons with the Ramblers and with time on his side he will probably score many more. Mitch Higgins was an unlucky omission from last year’s team but on consistent form he now warrants selection. It would seem Mitch has come a long way with his bowling in two years, but we can’t say the same for his batting.

The all-important no. 9, whose role it is to protect the vice-captain and captain from certain ducks, is a legend in the making at the Ramblers. For a man whose skill, athleticism and general wellbeing deserted him many years ago, Dave McDonald proves that lack of ability is no obstacle to scoring ducks. With another 3 ducks from only 6 innings Dave has his sights set on the club record of 7 when he strings a full season together.

At 10 and 11 are our vice-captain and skipper who would not be harshly judged for declaring at 8 wickets down to save some quotient.

Should any of the above team member lose form and start scoring runs, the first in line for selection will be Steve Davenport (2 ducks), Dave Zadow (2), Andrew Fisher (2), Sam “Bull” Durham (2), & Johnno Hilditch (2).

BBQ MAN OF THE YEAR The BBQ Man of the Year Award has been awarded to Nick Work. Nick has secretly been eyeing this trophy off for some time now but has been frustrated in the past by cameo performances by the likes of Geoff Stanley and Marty Wagner who stole the lime light for a single season. However, this season Nick has proven to be a true workhorse around the BBQ and has teamed up magnificently with his little brother Andrew Work to cook many BBQs with very little praise. In fact, the abuse that comes with the job means only the hardened chef can continue in the role – just ask Tom “Mad Dog” Muir who became depressed after burning his favourite chicken patties and was quickly deposed from BBQ duties by several players.

Also, it is has been proposed that Nick Work be affectionately known as “Sauce” from this day forward in honour of his BBQ dedication and his carrot top. This will also distinguish Nick from his brother who currently responds to the same nickname. Perhaps if Andrew’s form at the BBQ carries into 2012/13 we may see him with his hands on the trophy and the Works can retain the treasured meat chop in the family home. Congratulations “Sauce” and we hope next season you can turn the strike over in the middle as often as the snags at the BBQ.

A GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT Hi to all players and members. I would like to start by thanking Matt Smith and his team on a fantastic and successful year behind the scenes. There has been a lot of hard work from the committee raising funds to get our training facilities up to scratch and to take the club to another level with the new nets and storage shed. The ways this has been handled with the hard work and effort from these people, the club is in a great position for many years to come and one day to have our own clubrooms. Again, fantastic job by all. Congratulations to Dave Benson and Richie Veroude on a fantastic year with the under 15’s by winning a premiership in their first season. They have definitely shown the boys how to play the game and develop their skills. It is pleasing to see them also show these young fine cricketers the culture of the Coromandel Ramblers Cricket Club. Congratulations to all. To the other sub junior coaches and volunteers, without you guys putting your hands up year in year out, great clubs like this would not succeed and most importantly grow stronger. Well done to all. Onto the year that was... A very frustrating year for the A Grade boys, starting off with losing a few key players from last seasons team and not quite having the depth to cover these players, however it opened the door and gave opportunities to players that did the right thing e.g. John Hilditch who arguably was one of B Grade’s better bowlers for years, he got his opportunity to play A Grade this season and took it with both hands and bowled extremely well, I must add he took one of the finest catches that the boys had ever seen against Westminster. We will never call him Philip Tufnell again...he he. Great season Johno. To another player Steve Davenport who arguably is not our future...he he, but did everything right from day one by training and little things like helping out with under 15’s, he was consistent with the bat for most of the season. Steve topped this off with a century in the C’s, well done Steve. Matt Smith had another 300 run season and a magnificent 100 not out against Belair, a fantastic knock Smithy, well done. Matt continues to show us and the competition that he is in the top half a dozen players in the comp and has threatened oppositions bowling attacks throughout the season and gave his team mates pleasurable moments in watching him go about his batting. Well done again Smithy. To another future player of our club – Dave Benson...he he, on top of his under 15’s commitments his commitment to senior cricket this year like Steve’s was sensational. His keeping behind the stumps was solid all season including a blinder of a catch against Sharks at Cove in a 20/20 game followed up by him applauding himself after taking the catch. Also, Benno single handedly won the game for us against ICC Sharks. Chasing down 260 to keep our season alive, Dave went on to make a fantastic 100 odd not out in one of the most memorable wins we have had in A Grade cricket. A great season Beno. It was great to see Andrew Work who we all know has raw talent. Worky has really matured this season and should now be setting himself up as an established A Grade cricketer for many years to come. Well done to Jarrad Benson who had a fantastic year with the bat and showed his commitment to A Grade cricket by giving up his B Grade captaincy to pursue his A Grade cricket career again. It was good having Jarrad’s knowledge and experience throughout the season, well done Jarrad. I would like to especially thank Josh Haussen for supporting myself as my vice-captain for the past four seasons, it has been awesome the support he has shown me on and off the field, he is a good mate not only to me but to all of us. Cheers Archie. Like I said it was a frustrating season but we still had a chance to play finals up until the second to last game of the year, unfortunately we did not take our opportunities prior to Christmas and lost too many easy games. We shot ourselves in the foot in those games, unlike previous years where we won those games and went onto play finals. It shows that the way the competition is we are not that far away. Section one is all about taking opportunities, hopefully we can learn from this and have a more successful season next year.

Page 14: Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club – Fun, competitive ......Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club. I hope that each and every one of you has enjoyed the 2011-2012 season at

In finishing, it has been and honour and pleasure being the A Grade Captain for the past five seasons and to everybody who has supported me and given me the opportunity, I would like to thank them. This is a great club and we need to stick together to achieve that ultimate prize of an A Grade Premiership. Cheers, JC Justin Calderbank, A Grade Captain

B GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT

B-grade had what could only be called a difficult season. After winning the premiership in section 3 last year, we were promoted to section 2 which is a substantial step-up as a number of the teams are club's A-grade teams. With a very different side to the premiership team and 31 players rotating through the side during the season, it was difficult to have a settled side. However, there were a number of positives to come out of the season, particularly with the emergence of a number of young players performing very well. Names we'll hopefully be hearing more and more as the years go on such as Harley Simmonds; Angus Fisher; Darcy Kildea; Sam Walwyn; David Zadow and others really stepped up and have bright futures ahead. Other pleasing aspects of the year were the competitive nature in which the games were played and fought out, but also the camaraderie between the players on and off the field. This should always be seen as a key component in all grades and the club as a whole, and this was especially good to see given our fairly disappointing win tally of just two for the year. Ben Brown, who captained the side for much of the year, was a big instigator of this and ensured that everyone felt like they had a role in the team. When I took over for the last few games or so, I tried to continue that with a straight-forward, "batsmen bat, bowlers bowl" mentality. Our batting was an area where I think we have talent but we found ways of getting ourselves out fairly cheaply. Chad Porter with 182 runs @ 20.2 just edged out Harley Simmonds by only 1 run with 181 runs @ 22.6 for the batting trophy. Kingsley Smith made 170 runs @ 13 with Glen Rosie making 112 @ 37.3. Dave Wright rounded out the top 5 with 111 runs @ 22.2. The batting highlight of the year was Harley Simmonds' maiden century for the club with a very well compiled 108 in round 10 in extremely hot conditions and really anchored that innings. He also finished with the highest partnership for the season with Glen Rosie with 66 runs for the 8th wicket. The bowling saw a number of changes throughout the season with a huge number of players getting overs, but the run-away winner of the bowling trophy is Kingsley Smith with a 26 wickets at 18.4. He consistently opened the bowling all year and bowled very well and proved instrumental in getting breakthroughs when needed and getting early wickets. Jonathon Hilditch from only 3 games finished second with 12 wickets at an impressive 10.8 average; Ryan Ward was third with 10 wickets at an also impressive 9.6 (both achieving 6 wicket hauls) and Geoff Stanley finished fourth with 10 wickets at 25.2. Angus Fisher, who has immense promise and it'll be exciting to see him open the bowling for the Bs and As in the very near future, rounds out the top 5 with 7 wickets @ 26.1. Fielding was, well… let's just say there's plenty of room for improvement for next season. Too many catches were put down this season which can often mean the game can turn in an instant. Darcy Kildea won the trophy with 6 votes from as many matches getting the 2 votes in the last game to win over Glen Rosie with 5. Captain's trophy this year goes to Kingsley Smith. Not only did he have a great all round season with bat and ball; he also was the only player to play each game and was always early to help set up and then pack away the gear at the end of the day. He's the kind of team player each captain loves to have - he's happy to score; umpire and do what's required of him to help the team out. Lastly, a big congratulations to every member of the club on making what the club is right now - a very enjoyable place to be. I think we've got a great mix of competitive & social cricket along with strong mate-ship throughout the club which, with our incredibly strong junior program, holds the club in good stead for a very prosperous near future. Glen Rosie, B Grade Captain

C GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Continuing in Section 4, we had a disappointing season with only two wins out of eleven rounds. We were convincingly beaten by the top four sides, and in regard to the other games we certainly had some opportunities to turn the game to our favour. We did not, and allowed these games to get away from us. Having said that we all enjoyed our cricket and did our best we could on the day. Batting trophy was won by Scott (Gringo) Brodie with 347 runs, top scores of 93, 66, and 50 runs. This was supported by Brett (Chilly) Chilton on 279 runs, Andrew (Strunky) Strunk on 228 runs including a fine knock of 89. Kevin (Kev) O’Looney hit 163 runs and Andrew (Fish) Fisher on 149 runs top scoring with an entertaining 65, and a 55 run innings in just 14 balls against Belair. Bowling honours went to Alex Manning with 13 wickets. Following up was Mark (Chief) Withers taking 10 wickets, Ben (Benny) Chilton, David (Z) Zadow, and Andrew (Fish) Fisher each taking 8 wickets. Best figures belonged to Fish with 5/24. Fielding votes was tied this year between Andrew (Fish) Fisher and Ben (Benny) Chilton on 6 votes. These two virtually guarantee that if the ball comes to them in the air then they will make a catch out of it. Fish only

played 4½ games, and Ben always fields well with catches and returning the ball quickly to the keeper. Well done boys. Captain’s trophy is going to our Vice Captain this season. Andrew (Strunky) Strunk’s support on and off the field was exceptional. I have valued his input on the field as quite often his strategies have worked, to off the field in organising the C Grade to be ready to play cricket on the Saturday. Thank you Strunky for all of your hard work. Furthermore I would like to thank Scott (Gringo) Brodie for the match fee collection and his work in the scorebook. Without him at times the scorebook might have looked like it suffered a terrorist attack with errors and simply not adding up. Thanks Gringo for fixing those occasions up and your work with data collection at the end of the season. Another season gone, not so successful. However the enjoyment factor is still extremely high. Mixing the game of cricket with a good bunch of blokes playing for the Ramblers…quite a leveller. Cheers, Brett Chilton, C Grade Captain

D GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT The 2011/2012 D grade season has been a special one for me personally taking the reins as captain, the first time I have been named captain of anything! The first undertaking as captain was to introduce the 5 cans or 5 laps option as warmup before training. Not many takers for the 5 laps! The first challenge which was to remain a common theme for the rest of the season was to get enough players on the field for the first game. Thanks to Geoff ‘Gyprock’ Jenner, Karl ‘Gilly’ Gill, Bill Tonkin, Harry Lincoln, Phil Megson and Ray Haussen for offering their help in the first round to get enough numbers for an unfortunately forfeited game by Sheidow Pk. Pretty easy this captaincy thing so far! The second round we fielded a strong team against ICC Sharks with 2 new recruits, Colin Farrell and Daniel Hayes making their debut. Phil Megson enjoyed the previous round forfeit so much he came back for more punishment and made a solid 30 as opener. Simon Billett made his stamp on the D grade side with a 43 with the bat and 5 wickets with the ball. The tone was set for the year by this classy player and Ray Haussen’s still rubbing his ribcage where Billett’s ball got through! Josh Edson had his best game for the year with a 46 run knock and 2/3 with the ball. Round 3 was against one of the grand finalist’s teams for this year, though we didn’t know it at the time, Mitchell Pk. Another 2 new players joined the side in Patrick Needham and Judd Brumby and a great team bond was developing amongst the players. Billett again was inspirational with a great ton (106) after a major batting collapse and 4/49 with the ball. The captain supporting him stoically with a patient 30! Patrick Needham showed he was no mug with the bat or ball and could keep wickets as well! Colin Farrell’s excellent season was underway with 3/41 helping the D grade to an extremely enjoyable 6 run win. Round 4 against our old rivals Coromandel started with 4 of the D grade team informing me that they had just got back from clubbing in the city all night! And no, Harry Lincoln was not one of them but the team was treated to a master class in controlled bowling by this amazing bowler. Coro knocked us off fairly easily with some aggressive batting and good length bowling this game but the result could have been different if half my team was sober! Billett again BOG with 78 runs. Round 5 we caned South Rd easily, with wickets shared by several bowlers making for a fine team effort. Judd ‘the partnership destroyer’ Brumby taking his first wickets for the club with some fine Harry Lincoln type bowling. Robbie Jones back from the B grade smashed an entertaining 109 with the bat. Justin Langley found form with a fine 44 but special mention to Dave MacDonald and Tom “Mad Dog” Muir for a great opening stand, both weathering some difficult overs at the end of the first day. Also special thanks to Harry Telford and Tom Callow, 2 under 15’s that filled in enthusiastically and contributed a lot to the team. Round 6 we packed our bags, brimmed our petrol tanks and headed to North Haven to battle out top spot with them. Mad Dog Muir managed to navigate his car past Coromandel Valley too! A solid batting performance by the top order followed up by some determined middle order runs made for a competitive total of 174, Billett hitting a six to cow corner that still hasn’t landed! Colin Farrell cleaned up the North Haven batsmen with an impressive 5/28 helping restrict them to a 96 run total just before the sky opened up with a massive storm! The word “finals” was being thrown around a bit by players come round 7 against Warradale and confidence was high amongst the group, just the recipe to bring us back down to earth! With Robbie Jones and Colin Farrell elevated up the grades the team was weakened considerably, Justin Langley and Patrick Needham batting well with 57 and 77 respectively to give us 170 to bowl to. Warradale made the runs only 4 wickets down, our bowlers toiling hard all day for little reward, Simon Billett injuring his back badly during 1 over. Lesson 1 as captain, no talk of finals until you’re in them! Round 8 against Woodcroft and we fielded a strong side against a weak opponent. The opposition was better at drinking cans than bowling, Mad Dog making his highest score of 47, Langley dominating with 147 and Robbie Jones smashing 74 to give us a declared score of 2/302 after 45 overs. Woodcroft duly collapsed for 85, Colin Farrell (4/34), Judd Brumby (3/11) and Mitchy Higgins (2/34) running through them. An outright looked on the cards, Colin Farrell taking another 4 wickets, but was unfortunately denied to us by 3 wickets. So close but so far... Round 9 we fronted Plympton Footballers who batted first and made a respectable 199. The total could have been much more if not for an excellent effort after the 45 over drinks break, particularly by Dan Hayes who ended up taking 4/24 and Colin Farrell with 3/36. Mad Dog and Phil Megson opened the batting well making

Page 19: Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club – Fun, competitive ......Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club. I hope that each and every one of you has enjoyed the 2011-2012 season at

39 and 19 respectively, then the fireworks began with Justin Langley (101) and Rob Jones (123) making fantastic centuries! A score of 3/330 and finals was back on the lips of everyone, you know what happens then... Yep, round 10 against the Adelaide Cavaliers and we won the toss and batted and collapsed to a dismal score of 85. The reality check continued as the Cavaliers batted and made 187 and sent us back in for a possible outright loss. With the captain nursing a crook back and about as useful as a used tea bag this was a game to forget. The loss we had to have before the finals?? No outright defeat but a shocker of game, in hindsight this was our ticket out of the finals. Billett’s 75 and Patrick Needham’s 50 in the 2nd innings the only real highlights. Last game for the year before a possible finals berth was against Morphettville Park, the eventual grand finalist winner. This was a must win game for the team or else depending on results we were a strong chance of missing out on the finals we had been working so hard to get to. Unfortunately after sending the opposition in and taking regular wickets we had a disappointing last 15 overs of bowling, Morphettville finishing on 292. Mitch Higgins bowled the fastest spell I have ever seen and Gyprock was mostly unplayable. An outstanding batting performance was needed but unfortunately didn’t eventuate, injuries and unavailability’s taking their toll alongside the large total we were chasing and putting too much pressure on too few. So the 2011/2012 D Coromandel Valley Ramblers just missed out on playing finals, losing 4th spot to the team that forfeited against us in Round 1, Sheidow Pk. In all I would still rate it as an extremely enjoyable season with many successes and some new faces that I hope to see and have a drink with for many years to come. I am very grateful for the opportunity given to me to captain this side and rate it as an experience of a lifetime. Bring on 2012/13, I can’t wait! Martin Wagner, D Grade Captain

GLEN WATCHMAN CLUBMAN OF THE YEAR

In 1979/80 the club decided to honour its founder, Mr Glen Watchman, by initiating an award to be presented to the Clubman of the Year. The Clubman Award is awarded to a diligent and hardworking person who has had a strong input and contribution to the club performance, generally off the field, for the current year. Glen first played for the Ramblers in 1928/29 and played continuously until 1939/40 when the club went into recess during the Second World War. The Club was reformed in 1947/48 and Glen continued to play from then until his last season in 1966/67 - another 20 years. Up to the mid-sixties Glen was the club. He was Secretary, Treasurer, team organiser, matting steward and Association Delegate. His contribution on the field was just as impressive, with 3606 runs and 336 wickets in 217 games. Glen won 3 Bowling Trophies during the 1950’s and remains 7th on the Bowling Aggregate, 14th on the Games Aggregate and 19th on the Batting Aggregate for the club. These figures do not include statistics from the years he played before the war for which records are no longer available. Glen was also the Patron of the Ramblers from 1970 until his death in February 1985.

HAYDEN HILL MOST PROMISING JUNIOR Hayden Hill joined the Ramblers in 1980/81 after he moved to South Australia from Sydney. Sport was Hayden’s thing. He played cricket in the summer and footy in the winter - too much sport was never enough. In 4 seasons with the B Grade, Hayden won the Bowling Trophy three times and, when promoted to the A Grade for the next four seasons, he also won that Bowling Trophy three times. Hayden Hill could bowl and in 96 games in 9 seasons he took 244 wickets. This is a remarkable effort considering he battled cancer for almost three of the nine years. In his eight full seasons, Hayden never missed a game, such was his commitment to and enthusiasm for the game of cricket. Hayden died in 1990 after putting up a very brave fight. The Hayden Hill Most Promising Junior Award is awarded in memory of Hayden to a junior player (under 20 years of age) who displays just some of the qualities that Hayden displayed in his short time with us.

DAVID FERRIS MOST IMPROVED PLAYER Each year the club has awards a trophy to the club’s most improved player as voted by the all the captains and the coach. The award was started because many players are ineligible for the Most Promising Junior Award. The Most Improved Player must have played at least two seasons with the club and have demonstrated a marked improvement not only in their performance, but also in their attitude and involvement in the club. David Neil has donated the trophy and requested that it be named the David Ferris Most Improved Player Award. David Ferris played 161 games for the club in the 1970’s and 1980’s. He scored 1019 runs at 11.2 and took 288 wickets at 19.1. David played mostly in the A Grade and captained the side in 1979/80 and 1980/81. David was awarded the Clubman Award in 1981/82 and won the A Grade Bowling Trophy in 1975/76 and 1977/78. He was a great clubman and served on the committee for many years, including holding the position of Treasurer from 1974 - 1977.
