URCHATZ (Ritual Hand-washing) u ©g §xEWashing hands can take place twice during our Seder to remind us of the ritualpurification of the priests before they made offerings. Now we wash with noblessing, to get us ready for the rituals to come; and then later, with a blessing,preparing us for the meal.

q©t §x©M KARPAS (Green Vegetable)The karpas reminds us of springtime and hope. And yet, sometimes we despair ofthe evil in our world. Pesach calls us to keep hope alive and blooming. Now we dipthe karpas in salt water to recall the tears our people cried in Egypt when they wereslaves. May we never be so comfortable that we become complacent, forgetting thepain of others.

u ©g©i YACHATZ (Breaking the middle matzah)There are three pieces of matzah stacked on the table. We now break the middlematzah into two pieces. One piece, the Afikomen, literally “dessert” in Greek, ishidden. It must be found before the Seder can be finished. We eat matzah inmemory of the quick flight of our ancestors from Egypt. When word of theirfreedom came, they took whatever dough they had and fled before it had thechance to rise, leaving it looking something like matzah. Together:

THE FOUR CHILDRENThe Torah speaks of four types of children: oneis wise, one is wicked, one is simple, and onedoes not know how to ask.

1)The Wise One asks: “What is the meaning of the laws and traditions God hascommanded?”

2) The Wicked One asks: “What does this ritual mean to you?” By using theexpression “to you” he excludes himself from his people and denies God.

3) The Simple One asks: “What is all this?”

4) As for the One Who Does Not Know How To Ask, You shall explain to yourchild on this day, ‘It is because of what the Lord did.

We, of course, have 5 children and the last ones asks "when can I drink morewine?"

CHAROSET There’s nothing further from maror than charoset the sweet salad ofapples, nuts, wine and cinnamon that represents the mortar used by theHebrew slaves to make bricks.

ORANGEThe tradition of putting an orange on the seder plate is a response to those whowould exclude others from our community. The orange is now said to be a symbolof the fruitfulness of all Jews, whether they be gay, straight, male or female.

ROASTED EGGThe roasted egg (baytsah). We now eat the hard-boiled egg, a symbol of thePassover festival offering and new life in the spring season.”

K¥xŸeM KORECHWhile the English Earl of Sandwich is generally credited for inventing the snack ofhis namesake, Hillel may have originated it two thousand years ago by combiningmatzah, charoset, and a bitter herb.

THE THIRD GLASS OF WINEWe recall the third promise God made to the Jewish people: “I will redeem youwith an outstretched arm” with our third glass of wine.

We sing Elijah's song, and watch expectantly and hopefully for the winein the cup to diminish, a sure sign that Elijah has visited and the dawn of a newredemption is near.

dv §x¦p NIRTZAH (Conclusion)Passover Prayer in the Age of Coronavirus

Why is this night different from all other nights? Why is this Passoverdifferent from all other Passovers?

On this Passover, when a pandemic threatens our collective health on anunimaginable scale, we are called to respond with the power of our humanity, withthe Divine spirit implanted within us, with our legacy of hope and determination toprevail. We pray for the at risk, the isolated, the stricken, the mourners.

We pray for those who have dedicated their lives to keeping us healthy—doctors,nurses, health-care workers—and all who sustain our hospitals and health-careinstitutions— existing and makeshift—operating under trying circumstances.

We pray for the first responders—police officers, fire fighters, military personnelwho have been marshalled to the cause—all who are responsible for the safety ofour communities. We pray for our elected officials, who can save lives with wiseleadership. May God bless all of our public servants and watch over them.

On this Passover, when so many are separated from one another, we reach out toone another with renewed love and compassion. When someone is missing fromour Seder table, we tell their story as if they are with us. When there is personalsadness, we respond with communal solidarity, empathy, and fortitude.

On this Passover, not “all who are hungry can come and eat” and not “all who arein need can come and celebrate Passover.” In response, we commit all the days ofour year to a heightened awareness of Passover’s values—to freeing the enslaved,to feeding the hungry, to sheltering the homeless, to supporting the poor.

We rededicate ourselves to rekindling and cherishing our Passover traditions for allthe years of our future, when light will overcome darkness, when health willovercome infirmity. “This year we are slaves, next year we will be free.”As we had the pleasure to gather for a virtual Seder this year, we hope have theopportunity to sit at the same table in the years to come. We pray that God bringshealth and healing to Israel and all the people of the world, as we say:
