Joint Venture between Power Grid

and Sulabh International

Power Grid Corporation of India has shown interest tocollaborate with Sulabh International Academy ofEnvironmental Sanitation & Public Health to initiate variousprogrammes under CSR activities.

Sulabh International has got years of experience inimplementing various programmes concerning environmentalsanitation, hygiene education, health, alternate energy etc.

The plan is to have a joint venture between POWERGRIDand Sulabh International to meet the social needs of thedeprived community both in the selected rural and urbanareas.

Sanitation and Health Scenario

Very high Child Mortality Rate (66 under 5mortality).

More than fifty diseases including diarrhoea,

cholera, poliomyelitis, etc. have been reported

because of defecation in open due to lack of

toilets.

India rank 119 amongst 169 countries in the 2010

Human Development Report.

British Medical Journal conducted survey amongst

experts and medical professionals to identify the

best medical breakthroughs and scientific

advances of the past 150 years - Sanitation Voted the Greatest Advance since 1840.

 As per WHO-UNICEF JMP 2010 report globally

over 2.6 billion people lack basic sanitation

worldwide- of which 650 million people reside in

India.

Sanitation –  Present Situation

 According to WHO- UNICEF Joint Monitoring programme (2008

Status), 54% of urban household exclusive use latrine and

another 21% use shared latrine. For rural areas the figures are

21% and 4% respectively. However as per Department of Drinking

Water and Sanitation, GOI, the districts were reporting rural

Sanitation coverage of 68% in 2010.

It has been observed in India (Total Sanitation Campaign), that

sanitation Programme that neglect sustainable technology and

adopt cheap, unscientific and environmentally unsustainable

sanitation facilities, achieve Hygiene Behavior Change (open

defection) in short term but face revarsal of behavior in the longterm. ( Reverting back to open defection).

Drop-out of girls from schools was high.

Public places like railway stations, bus stops, religious and tourist

places, had no provision of public toilets.

Scope of work –  Under Social

and Environment Sector Household toilets in the rural areas.

Liquid and solid waste management in rural areas.

Human Resources Development Centers in the rural

blocks/districts. Community toilets with bio-gas generation in the urban

and rural areas.

Initiation of “Healthy Village” programme in selected

areas. School sanitation cum science clubs

The programmes may be developed in a cluster of

village.

Household Toilets

The activities proposed under this programme will include:

Sanitation coverage of all households

Health & Hygiene promotion

Women Empowerment

Strengthening of Self help group (SHG)

Construction of toilets facilities

Example: In Hirmitla village of Mewat district of Haryana, Rail Tel

Corporation of India is funding for construction of 120 household

toilets. For this project 80% funds are provided by Rail Tel and

balance 20% generated from the beneficiaries. This will provide allthe households in the village with individual toilets.

Solid and Liquid Waste

ManagementThe activities proposed under this programme will

include:

Study the needs for solid and liquid waste

management in the rural areas/villages.

Develop suitable models with community levelsustainable technologies for implementation.

Install various technologies as per site conditions.

Monitor environmental factors for adaption of these

technologies.

Provide training to the community members to adapt

the technologies and maintain them.

Develop operation and maintenance manual for the

community.

Human Resources Development

CentersThe activities proposed to be included in the programme:

Development of training modules for the village community

based as need assessment.

Vocational training on various trades to the selected members of

the rural community. Development of demonstration centre to showcase various units

related to environmental sanitation technologies, rainwater

harvesting.

School for the children for use of village community.

Health sub-centre for the benefits of the community. Community toilet with biogas units for use of the community and

demonstration.

Bio-gas generation from

community toiletsThe primary objective of the project is to provide pollution free and

sustainable sanitation facilities to the community in the urban

and rural areas towards achieving the MDG target.

The specific activities of the project will include: To demonstrate self-sustaining and environment friendly public

toilet facilities to be used by the community.

To inculcate the clean habits such as use of toilet, personal

hygiene, hand washing etc. amongst the community.

To generate bio-gas for local use. To support and demonstrate to the local bodies the construction

technology, operation and maintenance of community toilets in a

sustainable manner.

Healthy Village

The activities proposed under this programme will include:

Promotion and mobilization of health and environmental measures.

To raise community awareness on health, hygiene and the other related

issues.

Priority on improving environmental services (water supply, sanitation,

village cleanliness, etc.)

To mobilize communities and stockholders to participate in various

Environmental Sanitation activities.

To facilitate the cooperation between health sector and other sections at

local level.

To prioritize environmental and basic services.

To encourage and promote mobilization of resources for socio-economic

integrated development.

Involvement of local schools to activate the process at village level.

Improvement of environment & health in an integrated fashion.

School Sanitation cum science

clubsThe activities proposed to be included in the programme:

To identify the issues related to the health, hygiene & sanitation in

schools.

Design and develop the appropriate intervention on health, hygiene and

sanitation education in schools.

Orient and sensitize school teachers and community on health, hygiene

and sanitation education.

 Aware , educate and sensitize school children for better sanitation &

hygiene promotion through interactive classroom sessions,

demonstrations etc.

Promote responsible behavior among school children throughbehavioral change & communication.

Promotion of school sanitation cum science clubs.

Develop & construct model toilets in all selected schools.

Conclusion

Corporate Social Responsibility is represented by the

contribution undertaken by corporate to society

through its core business activities, its social

investment and philanthropy programmes and its

engagement in public policy.

 A strong CSR programme is an essential element in

achieving good business practices and effective

leadership. The corporates have understood that

their impact on the economic, Social andenvironmental landscape directly affects their

relationships with stakeholders, in particular

investors, employees, customers, business partners,

governments and communities.
