GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY The ultimate culmination of the event calendar is without doubt the Summer Ball. Traditionally held in the foremost 5 star

hotels of London, most lately the iconic Landmark Hotel, this is a spectacular spectacle indeed.

This year we were delighted and amazed with a Broadway theme and all the trimmings that came with it. The Landmark

ballroom was transformed like we had never seen it before as front and centre was a large stage complete with the

signature red curtains. Paparazzi greeted us on the red carpet as we entered the ballroom and got some rather interesting

shots, and the ballroom walls were lit up with the lights of Broadway.

We were first dazzled by a group of showgirls who Roger insisted were the new telesales team, feathers and all. They

were then joined by a fantastic tap dancer who was so talented he could do it upside-down…and he did. Whilst left in awe

of the girls and their feathers we tucked in to a delicious starter only to then be caught by surprise by none other than the

west end cast of Chicago – “we had it coming!” The cast took the stage by storm and magnificently portrayed the whole

musical in just a ten minute medley, it had all of the glitz and glamour of Broadway…and “all that jazz”.

Then of course we were left with the headlining act, and to everyone’s delight on came The Jersey Boys Tribute straight

from the west end, with Frankie Valli being played by none other than Jon from S Club Seven. Who knew he could sing

like that! Not S Club Seven! They were fantastic and the dance floor was full within moments of them coming on stage,

perhaps because of their catchy tunes, perhaps because some of

the younger girls wanted to get nearer to their childhood crush,

who knows, but they wowed the crowd and really topped off a

night of un-comparable entertainment.

With tummies full from a mouth-watering menu and wallets

emptied to some fantastic causes through the raffle and

auctions, we were ready to dance the night away with our house

band Hooper who never fail to get the party going and keep it

going to the early hours.

With all said and done, another fantastic Summer Ball was over,

the best yet. Once all had come to a close it was off to bed and

the total raised stood at a huge £40,345.00! Thank you to

everyone who contributed to making the Summer Ball another

categorical success. Here’s to next year.

The Alpine Experience. A weekend event in the French Alps where you can challenge yourself, or your

team, taking part in different physical and mental activities. Whether you are looking to raise money for charity,

find a top-notch team building enterprise or even as a personal achievement, the Alpine Experience is the perfect

opportunity. We have been attending since 2002 and are proud to have helped raise in excess of £320,000 for

noteworthy causes across the United Kingdom.

The weekend is based around the infamous ‘Le Belier’ marathon, a 27km run across the 5 mountain peaks

surrounding the remote skiing village of La Clusaz. Normally held in August, over 4000 people of all ages and

ability levels take part each year.

This year saw the 30th

anniversary of Le Belier and the introduction of Le trail, a 42km run across the Alps,

although none of our guests were fit enough or mad enough to attempt it! Whether walked, run, half or full

everyone challenges their abilities and we would like to congratulate everyone who took part!

It’s not all about the run though! The Alps and nearby Lac d ‘Annecy host a huge variety of activities for you to

take part in, such as white water rafting, canyoning, mountain biking and luging. No matter what your age or your

physical ability, there will be something for you. Even if you are unable (or unwilling!) to take part in the

activities, the village itself hosts a variety of shops and restaurants with idyllic Alpine views and scenery to be

enjoyed, photographed and remembered.

IT’S ALL ABOUT EXPERIENCE

RED NOSES Two Friday 13

th’s in consecutive months and

two fantastic days! March 13th 2015 was of

course Red Nose Day. With a rule of ‘wear

red and donate’ we had all manner of outfits

turn up to work, the theme this year was

‘make your face funny for money’ and that’s

just what many of us did. From wigs to

glasses, beards to boppers we had all the gear

and no idea…how foolish we looked!

What would any charity day be without a

large bake sale that hosted an array of treats

that the staff had slaved over! It’s safe to say

lots of the money was made here, who could

resist cheese scones, cupcakes, shortbread

and so many more drool worthy sweets!

With so many ways to raise money we opted

for the ever favourite sweepstake,

congratulations to Megan Sim who won

and generously donated the money back

to the charity.

We also held an office quiz, offered

alcohol as a prize and the entry money

went, of course, to charity. With rounds

based on general knowledge, television

and nature our clever winners were Andy

Wojcik and Megan Sim! As a team we

raised over £130 for Red Nose Day! Well

done to everyone involved!

We take part in many of the charity days,

such as Christmas Jumper Day,

Macmillan Coffee Morning and many

more throughout the year, after all who

doesn’t love an excuse to bake a cake!

Why not find out what charity days are

coming up that your work place could get

involved in?

MUSINGS FROM THE BAR MEETS SILVER LININGS

The latest instalment of the so called “BIG TAX CASE”

(who comes up with these soubriquets?) was recently

played out north of the Border.

Result: A surprise victory for HMRC.

Glasgow Rangers (or more accurately the trading vehicle

that traded as Rangers) in liquidation was hit by a

substantial tax bill arising from the use of EBTs to pay its

staff (including players). The liquidators appealed and

WON at the Lower Tax Tribunal. HMRC were given leave

to appeal to the Upper Tax Tribunal and the result was

another WIN for the taxpayer confirming the efficacy (in

certain circumstances) of the strategy employed. HMRC

appealed, again (money not a constraint to endless appeals

by HMRC) and because of geography the case was heard at

the Scottish Court of Session.

The learned Scottish judges (not a contradiction in terms I

am assured), decided to dispense with the normal legal

convention of accepting foreign law as fact (in this case

micturating over English law) and decided they were

sufficiently qualified to judge the case’s merits and

overturn a specialist court on fairly specious grounds.

“Does anyone care?” By Ipso Dipso

Well to be fair this was the same court that previously

weighed the evidence at Sheepdog trials and convicted 33

Collies all called “Lassie”.

So what does that mean? There is no one to pay the tax

bill; there is no one to pay the costs of all these appeals -

(can anyone see the irony of spending Taxpayers money to

NOT recoup alleged unpaid taxes?). The poor unfortunate

legitimate creditors of the failed football club cannot

receive less than nothing - so what was the point? Is it fair

to put it all down to political one-upmanship with Scotland

thumbing its nose at its southern neighbour? Or has a

serious precedent been set. Well yes and no I would say.

The “silver lining”? The case will now be sent to the

Supreme Court (in London) where “reason free from

passion”* will hold sway and its back to round one – each

case on its own merits.

Your round I think Silver as the one immutable fact

remains –The Lawyers always win.

*irony and Aristotle in the same article? – time to buy a

watchtower!

“MORRY’S ANGELS” “Morry’s Angels” are the lucky few who get to accompany

‘The Chairman’ out West to take in a London show.

Morry and his “Harem’s” as he so often refers to them,

venture off to London where they go for lunch in their

hidden gem, a quaint little “Italian Cafe” (actually a large

chain) that do a good glass of fizz and a bowl of soup!

Morry and his angels have so far

enjoyed the powerful Les

Miserables, the beautiful

Phantom of the Opera and the

classic Miss Saigon.

After the show they often go for

a bite to eat in a nearby classic

restaurant, giving Morry the

chance to reminisce a few good

stories. They were lucky enough

to experience The Stafford Hotel

with its American Bar and ate in

the Lyttelton restaurant which

served divine cuisine.

On their first visit, just a short

walk away, was the renowned

restaurant Kettner’s. With its

elegant 1930s style it is no

wonder it has the reputation it

boasts with Oscar Wilde, Agatha

Christie and Bing Crosby as

prior celebrated regulars.

The building is gorgeous -

Grade II listed and the angels

loved it so much they went back

last time!

On Friday 13th this past February we took our chances and hosted a soft launch dinner at the iconic London Shard. At

a dizzying 33 floors high our guests enjoyed spectacular views of the capital’s busy streets below, not to mention the

bright and beautiful, and of course planned, rainbow that spread over the skyline during dinner – timed perfectly I

might add.

It was of course our first introduction to the new super club, the Alpha Club, and the whole day had an excited and

positive atmosphere. As our guests arrived into the Shangri-La they were met with a décor that gave a sense of being

transported to an exotic country.

THE VIEW FROM THE SHARD

The Shangri-La menu was exquisite and whilst the Asian

twist in the cuisine was tingling our taste buds the talented up

close magician went from table to table leaving everyone

stunned and guessing how he knew that they had just drawn a

giraffe on their card. One of the highlights of the afternoon

was our guest speaker Mr Bill Callaghan, who lives and

works as a Yeoman Warder in the Tower of London and quite

rightly stated: “you can see my house from here”. Bill was

captivating as he told of the horrible histories that the Tower

of London holds and having an amazing view looking over to

the very walls that lived these tales made it extra special. His

comic timing was fantastic and he really brought history to

life, it’s possible that we even learnt something!

We are looking forward to re-visiting the Shangri-La

next month for the official Alpha Club launch and

‘book reveal’.

This past year has been jam packed and what better

place to reflect on all of these events than the place

where it all began.

Places going fast!

When called for dinner we were greeted by Mr Bob Walton MBE,

founder and chairman of the Nth Degree Club who told everyone a

little of what to expect from this new rousing club. Combining the

best from a top circle of suppliers and organisers members of the

Alpha Club will have VIP access to highly coveted events and

tickets including but not limited to the Monaco Grand Prix, the

Rugby World Cup, the Royal Ascot and many more sporting, red

carpet and teambuilding events. Working alongside event

organisers, this club can help you put on exclusive private dining

events in desirable UK venues to entertain and impress your clients

ALPHA IN WONDERLAND

THE PURPLE YEAR IS HERE

The Kensington Roof Gardens are truly a

hidden gem in the city of London.

Approaching the venue, the external aesthetic is

rather unremarkable but don’t be deceived –

hidden at the very top of the building is an

amazing treasure trove of beauty and style. The

Alpha Club hosts a yearly luncheon at this

venue for members to enjoy a day of exquisite

food and drink whilst networking amongst

leading business men and women of their

respective fields.

A noteworthy venue in its own right, the

Kensington Roof Gardens provide fantastic

hospitality and service, confidently boasting an

array of heavenly food and drinks served from

its own Babylon Restaurant. The venue itself is

truly inspiring; as you enter this mystical world

you are transported from the hustle and bustle

of normal life to an exotic land with timeless

influences from all over the world.

This year the Alpha Club is introducing the crème de le crème of

international trips with this once in a lifetime experience to South

Africa, Botswana and Zambia, yes that’s all three in one amazing trip!

This is not a silver trip, not a gold trip, even better than a platinum trip.

This is the Alpha Club Purple Trip. Organised by Alpha club

founding members Ulterior Events, they put on exclusive and very

limited experiences like no other and trust me when I say if there is a

purple trip happening, you want to be on it!

These trips are exclusive for Alpha Club members and include

business class travel throughout. On this fantastic safari trip guests will

enjoy game drives in the beautiful reserves of Africa, a guided tour

and helicopter flight over one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the

world, local cuisine and entertainment as well as five star luxury

accommodations.

To find out the criteria for becoming an Alpha Club member please

Whilst perusing the beautiful gardens and

enjoying a welcome drink we were

entertained by a whimsical and fun guitar

trio playing the likes of La Cucaracha and

La Bamba. Luckily we were blessed with

gorgeous weather to enjoy a dance.

Upon being seated we were welcomed by

the face of the Alpha Club Angus

Dudgeon who spoke of the club and what

it offers, we then indulged in a lovely

summer menu whilst our ears were also

treated to the divine sounds of Sophie

Evans, runner up of ‘Somewhere Over

The Rainbow’, who sang her beautiful

rendition of “I can’t make you love me”

which she sang on the Children in Need

show. A spectacular talent, some of us

even went to her show in the West End

the following week, as we just couldn’t

get enough.

A TRIBUTE

HOLIDAYS ARE COMING

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we have to include this

tribute.

The London Capital Club, who are recent associates of ours and whom we

have been working closely with over the past few months, have lost a dear

member of their team.

Chris Standen was a genuine, kind hearted man who always had time for

everyone, whether he knew them or was getting to know them. After having

Chris at many of our Drop in Drinks, our Alpine Experience and our

luncheon at the Roof Gardens our staff had got to know him well and he

will be sorely missed by us all.

We want to take this time to send our condolences to his colleagues, friends

and family. Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with you all at this

difficult time.

The Staff Christmas Party once again was a great

night at the local Best Parties Ever, filled with

circus themed entertainment and a delicious four

course dinner.

There were most certainly some dance moves that

should have been left to the professionals but

doesn’t everyone think it’s such a good idea to try

out the dirty dancing lift on a night out?

Thank you to all our staff who have worked so hard

this year and we hope you enjoyed yourselves.

THE BATTLE OF THE 5 STAR AIRWAYS By The Not So Mystery Flyer To Oz

I have flown to Oz 18 times in the last 3 years and flown with many different

airlines which gives me a good insight. Virgin Upper Class was one of my

favourites, but they now co-share with Singapore Airlines and have stopped flights

to Oz. Air Malaysia was an interesting airline; everything was designed for

someone who was smurf-like in stature, from cutlery to baggage trolleys, so not that

great for someone who is let’s say ‘chunky’!! Singapore Airlines have been my “go

to” airline, but with the introduction of their Star Alliance product, basically co-

sharing with 10 other airlines, the flights are normally full and the cabin crew have

lost their “sparkle”.

So, time for a change! I wondered how Emirates would match up to Singapore in

business class…spoiler alert…the pros definitely outweigh the cons for the price

and product.

I flew out of Gatwick, which I much prefer to T2 at Heathrow, which is far too big

as you have to walk for 30 minutes from check in to gate. The business class lounge

was lovely, the selection of food was restaurant quality, can’t remember how many

lamb chops I had! On boarding the plane I was welcomed on board in style with a

glass of bubbles and wash bag with all the gubbins you could need and a food

menu. The seats are arranged in 2+2+2 but are staggered so you can lay flat. The

seats are ample and even ‘the ever shrinking’ Chris Pearson would be

comfortable! If you are flying as a couple I would sit in the middle as 2 pods

join up to make a “super pod”. If you are bigger than Chris I would sit in row A or K as you have a window seat which is slightly wider as there is no side return.

Dinner was served in “silver service” style and after eating too much cheese, I had a digestive at the in-flight bar, which seats 2 lots of 4 people and could hold 15-

20 standing. The porcelain in the WC was full size and had plenty of room. I returned to my seat to examine the 300+ films I could watch. On disembarking, after

passport control, a limo driver greeted me and drove me to my destination. All very slick. The Nth Degree partnership with Emirates brings you a personal service

in the form of Anna, who books all your flights and arranges the best seats for you, along with booking the pickup and drop off drivers. If you are a regular

traveller it’s luxury. This is the cherry on the cake. In summary, no brainer.

The only con I could find is the business class lounge in Dubai which is poor compared with Singapore, but with the amount of miles I’m racking up, I will have

my platinum card which will allow me access to the 1st class lounge soon!

Now to that tricky subject of price point. Most business class flights are £4k low season and £5k high season with Singapore. Emirates is the only airline to offer

‘save’ business class seats which on average are £3.6k compared with their flexible ticket which is a lot more, which knocks Singapore out of the park. Coupled

with Nth Degrees’s further discount of 10-15%, it’s a no brainer.

Forever

January 2016 8

This year saw the inaugural Alpha Club Christmas Ball, and what a night it was!

Held at the stunning Rosewood, London it was full of festive spirit, as you drive

into the courtyard you get a truly magical feeling as the drive is lined with

glistening Christmas trees.

On entering the foyer for a champagne reception you could be captured in front of

the picturesque tree towering behind you or seated on the wooden sled among the

frosted fir trees. The foyer was draped with traditional Christmas décor including

reindeer and pine cones and had a warm comforting feeling. One thing certain to

cool you down however were the very popular snow cones, served from a cart you

could get cocktail flavoured cones with or without alcohol, although I’m sure you

know which most opted for.

We were called into the ballroom and the sight was truly enchanting, perfectly

decorated, but our eyes were drawn to a mysterious archway in the centre of the

floor. Once welcomed by Roger Purkiss who handed the baton onto Angus, the

very first Alpha Club members watch, by Christopher Ward, was presented to

Robert Walton MBE for being part of the brain child of this new exciting club.

AND SO THIS WAS CHRISTMAS…

WE HOPE YOU HAD FUN

The festivities started with an

impressive ‘aerial act’, the archway

on the floor rotated as a pair of

incredible gymnasts used the bars to

perform mesmerizing lifts, holds and

tricks using just the archway, drapes

and each other for support. We had a

mouth-watering four course menu

including a traditional turkey

Christmas dinner, which was

delightful, who can complain about

two Christmas dinners in one year?

In the midst of this captivating

evening came bounding out Paul

Dabek who very quickly won over

the crowd with his high energy and

quick wit. Paul was astounding with

his tricks and comedy, he had us

‘eating out of the palm of his hand’

and left us scratching our heads at

how on earth he got that £20 note

inside the banana, he then went

around the tables amazing the guests

with close up card tricks.

Shortly after the main course came the

main act, the incredible ‘Collabro’ who

won Britain’s Got Talent in 2014.

Since then they have had huge success

with their debut single Stars rocketing

to number 1 in the UK and then

releasing two albums which reached

number 1 and number 2 in the UK

album chart. It’s safe to say that they

met and beat expectations as they are

phenomenal live and they held

everyone’s attention as they serenaded

us with songs from Les Mis, Disney

and recent pop. They filled the dance

floor with their beautiful rendition of

“White Christmas” and had everyone

(well all the big kids) singing along to

“let it go”. It was a sensational curtain

call for the entertainment.

Of course we were then joined by our

never faltering house band Hooper

who as ever got the party started and

took us dancing into the early hours of

the morning.

“A very well organised and fun event!”

In previous newsletters we have introduced the

Bletchley Boxing Club, a local club for kids that gets

them into boxing and off the streets. In Tandem

Resources are a supporter of theirs since donating

money to the club alongside The John Conteh

Foundation.

In March they held a fundraising black tie dinner

event to raise money for the club and the kids fought

it out in the ring in the centre. John attended as a

surprise for the kids, whom he had met a year

previously and took pictures and signed autographs

for them.

It is great to see how well Bletchley Boxing Club

have come along since the ITR sponsorship and we

look forward to keeping up with their progress.

THE SUNSHINE STATE For the past two years The John Conteh Foundation has been holding golf

tournaments across the most prestigious courses of the UK with the aim of

taking the winning team of each round to Orlando Florida to battle it out in the

Grand Final, whilst along the way raising funds for the John Conteh

Foundation.

October 2015 saw that final take place with not only the winning teams, but

some fresh new talent and a couple of local teams from Orlando. Over three

days and three courses the teams were put to the test on Panther Lake, Crooked

Cat and Falcons Fire to crown the champions of the John Conteh Golf Classic

Series.

The results were close, changing every day but the team that came out on top

were Bond, made up of Clive Court, Steve Archer, Richard Bendell and

Richard Archer! Well done guys, let’s see if you can keep your title in the next

series.

The trip included Virgin Atlantic flights, transfers and accommodation at the

stunning 5* resort Gaylord Palms, as well as the golf and a gala dinner!

As Orlando is known for its attractions and appeals to all ages, some players

opted to take their families and partners along. With so much on offer in

Orlando you were never short of something to do or see.

Many took to the theme parks, Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure

offer thrill rides like no other, with a movie set feel to explore along the way.

Then of course there’s the famous mouse with 6 parks in total just in Orlando,

Disney offers something for everyone with rides, shows and festivals to see.

Rumour has it that shopping is so much better in Florida, and the rumour is

true! With so many malls and designer outlets to choose from you can easily

spend a couple of days getting lost in the shops with impeccable service to

make you feel like ‘Pretty Woman’.

It certainly has an appeal for all and our trip’s age range was from 1 year old

to 89 and we still had everyone on the dance floor for the gala finale night,

with some very special guests in the form of the duelling pianos from Las

Vegas!

The first final of the John Conteh Golf Classic Series was a big success and

we would like to thank all the teams, organisers and guests that made it so

special.

All team entries and money raised at the events go to The John Conteh

Foundation, thanks to our generous sponsors who cover the costs of the

events.

The John Conteh Foundation is a fantastic charity created by former World

Champion Boxer, John Conteh. The aim is to raise much needed funds for

charities which might otherwise be overlooked. St Cuthberts Hospice and

Bletchley Boxing Club are two, very different, but very worthy causes

which it supports.

We would like to thank our sponsors:

warm up on the green to scope out the competition before tackling a truly magnificent course. The competition is a

stableford format and there will be competition holes along the way with chances to win some extra prizes on the “Longest

Drive” and “Nearest the Pin” holes.

At the Orlando final in 2015 we were joined by two local teams who each made donations to The Foundation, matched

by sponsor ITR we were able to give £1000 each to two local charities, Buenaventura Lakes Boys & Girls Club and Roy

Cruz of One Punch Boxing Gym. Both help under privileged children and were so grateful for the donation on the lead

up to Christmas, meaning they could give the kids parties and a safe environment over Christmas.

We would like to thank all the teams and supporters that enable The John Conteh Foundation to continue their

fantastic work.
