El Camino Divino Pilgrimage

Would you be interested in a chalenging, historic trip in Europe? It is called the Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James). It is the name given to any of the several an-cient pilgrimage routes spanning Europe that end in the city of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, northwest Spain. Here tradition holds that the remains of St. James the Apostles rest within the ancient city’s Cathedral. Fr. Murphy will be leading one such Camino from October 8th to October 19th, 2018. We will cover 98 miles begin-ning from Lisbon, Portugal and traveling Santiago de Com-postela and then returning to Fatima, Portugal. This is a walking pilgrimage! Great food and accommodations are provided each night. This is a guided tour. For more infor-mation, go to the website: www.ultreiaysuseia.com or call Sister Joan Gabbin (904) 881-0921.

From The Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

Happy Easter to you and all of your families! The Easter Season is a time of joy and peace. Christ, after suffering a brutal death on the cross and being buried for three days, arose from the tomb triumphantly. The resurrection of Christ gives new meaning to our lives, most particularly when tragedies or sorrows occur.

Such was the case back in 2001. On Good Fri-day, as I was preparing to conduct services that afternoon, I received a very frantic call from my brother-in-law. He said my sister Joanie was dying in the hospital and had to be resuscitated three times. I immediately informed my pastor and told him that I had to leave and travel three and half hours or more to Summerville, SC. My heart was sickened at the thought of losing my dear sister. I instinctively remember that there was a priest from our diocese stationed in that town. My sister Joanie had once met him some years back. I asked the priest to drop whatever he was doing and go the hospital and give my sister last rites. Moreo-ver, I added that my sister had been away from the sacraments for many, many years. He raced to the hospital. In the meantime, I drove like a bandit up I-95 to get to Summerville only to find out that there was a traffic gridlock on the highway due to the fact it that everyone was traveling for the holi-day.

When I arrived after an exhausting drive, I met my brother-in-law who was nervously smoking a cigarette. He said a priest had come to give his wife the last rites. I called the priest to thank him. He replied that he had somehow heard her confes-sion even though she had a ventilator in her mouth, gave her absolution for all her sins, anoint-ed her forehead and hands with the oil of the sick, gave her Viaticum by putting a small fragment of host into her mouth and then gave her the final blessing. I was so amazed. A miracle. My sister was back in the church!!!

When I did finally see my sister, she looked at me with tears in her eyes. I broke down and held

Her hands telling herthat everything was going to be ok and that I loved her. Shortly after this, she fell asleep and did not come back to conscious-ness. The doctors told us that Joanie was in grave condition and the chances of her recovery were quite slim. I made a decision to travel back to Jacksonville and celebrate the Easter services. It was one of the most difficult Easters I had ever had to embrace. But, celebrating the Paschal mys-teries had such meaning to me. Death leads to new life.

Several days later, close to the Feast of Divine Mercy, I drove back up to Summerville. The doc-tors told us that my sister was dying and that we were keeping her artificially alive and her brain had died. Sadly, I watched as Joanie faded away when the ventilator was removed. My brother-in-law and his kids came in once she had passed away. It was such a devastating scene.

A number of days later, at my sister’s funeral mass, my priest friend who came to our rescue on Good Fri-day, gave the homily. I don’t remember the exact words. But, what came to me was this: My sister was saved from death and now was experiencing eternal life. That gave me great consolation. I knew where my sister was.

Every time we celebrate Easter, we look to hope in Jesus Christ, the Risen One, who conquered death. Death is no longer the end of life but the gateway to new life. Eternal life awaits all those who believe in Jesus Christ but also those who have turned away from sin and embraced the mercy and love of Our Savior. God, in His own mysterious way, showed His tender mercy and love to my sister. This is a memory that I will always cherish, even though it was painful. Those words of Jesus, “Peace be with you,” I now understand these words of Our Lord, as I have to say goodbye to my loved ones and friends through the years. Fr. Murphy
