The club has been fortunate that no major disaster's have befallen us such as lost airplanes, sinkholes, forest fires, etc. and can only thank the hard work of the membership to make our ongoing activities suc-cessful.

The year started out with our annual Allen Mor-ris Laughlin tour which was, again, marvelous and we toured to the Paramount Ranch for a day of his-tory, browsing and lunch.

Noteworthy that Bob Crane did a champion's job of arranging the day at Paramount and Bob enlisted the aid of the local ranger to show us a film on the background of Paramount and historical insight to the rise and fall of the facility.

We had the usual suspects, Allen Morris, Don Troyer, Ed Hoffman, Bob Crane, Dick Bottis and wife, Bob Beck and wife, myself and a half dozen guests and after the tour Bob had made reserva-tions at Wood Ranch for a great BBQ lunch.

The next event that all should be aware of is the CCC spring meet in Fresno and it is expected to be well turned out.

The club's next event is the spring meet on May 4 at John Piovesan's GMdownuder and it appears that we have reached our limit of judged cars and as always need judges - you all know that the club

does not skimp on taking care of our judges and participants and this meet will be no exception.

The next outing we have planned is to the Or-ange Empire Railway on June 21 and to the Reagan Museum on September 20 and our fall meet is going to be at the RANCH (Verity and Rusty Hobbs place).

I would note that VCCA had it's annual All-Cal meet in Laguna Hills the end of April and the meet was organized by our Allen Morris and the OC VCCA crew; the meet was held at the Hills Hotel off of La Paz road and we toured to Lou Webb's auto muse-um (one of the best museum's I have been at in a very long time), the Lyons air museum, a boat tour of Balboa Harbor and am early morning kick tire get-to-gether and a day driving tour - the last thing that was on the agenda was a fantastic dinner (arranged by Allen) at Villa Roma and the food did not stop coming, did not stop coming.

The board voted to donate $500.00 to the Cor-vette Museum to be used for the damage caused by the sinkhole.

Jerry Louer is our road tour leader and he has made all the reservations along the way so if any of you are thinking about joining us on the tour please get in touch with Jerry for any information you need (951 734-9818) - I can assure you that Jerry's road tours to Nationals are well worth participating in.

I always look forward to seeing more of our members participate in the many events we have planned for the year and may we all "SAVE THE WAVE".

Corvette Museum - Sinkhole Recovery

After the shocking devastation the museum in Bowling Green suffered on February 12th, work crews labored to recovered the swallowed up historic Corvettes.

Only the pictures do justice to the enormity of the damage wrought to the very cen-ter of the museum. Sadly, some of the cars will obviously not recover.

2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Ends Quest to Save Museum Corvettes The last of the "Great 8" Corvettes has been pulled from the depths of the 40 foot wide by 60 foot deep sinkhole that collapsed within the Skydome building of the National Corvette Museum exactly eight weeks ago, marking the end of the first phase of rebuilding. "We're happy to have the completion of our major goal to recover all eight of the Corvettes," said Wendell Strode, Exec-utive Director of the Museum. "Next week we have a meeting with all the major players, including the construction team, geo-technical firm, cave and karst specialists, engineers, our insurance company and others to review all the findings and have discussions on the next steps and a mutual understanding about rebuilding." The 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 was one of two Corvettes that's whereabouts were initially unknown after the sinkhole happened. The car was finally discover this Monday, upside down with the nose pointing towards the red Spire in the center of the room. It is, by far, the most heavily damaged of all eight Corvettes. "It looks like the worst one... a lot of parts and pieces," said Mike Murphy, CEO of Scott, Murphy and Daniel Construc-tion. "It took a lot of punishment from a lot of big rocks."

NCRS Presidents Message “The Great Eight”

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — As many of you know by now on Wednesday February 12, 2014 a sinkhole formed un-der the National Corvette Museum, swallowing eight cars. The devastating news came to me as I was at work that morning with a phone call

Sometime before 5:30 a.m. CT, the sinkhole started to form underneath the Sky Dome. By 5:45 a.m., motion detectors were going off and police were called. As the world has seen by now security cameras at the muse-um caught the destruction. It was surreal as we look on and saw the floor open up taking the eight Corvettes into the sink hole

Of the eight cars that fell into the hole, the museum owned six and General Motors owned two. None of the cars affected were on loan from individuals.

GM's Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant has offered to help with the restoration of the damaged vehicles.

The 8 Corvettes are now being known affectionately as” The Great Eight”.

Cars involved in the incident, which occurred inside the museum's the Sky Dome, are listed below:

•1962 black Corvette

•1984 PPG pace car for the Indy 500

•1992 white 1 millionth-built Corvette

•1993 ruby red 40th anniversary Corvette

•1993 ZR1 Spyder on loan from General Motors, a design study that was never built.

•2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette, a one-off tuner model.

•2009 white 1.5 millionth-built Corvette.

•2009 ZR1 "Blue Devil" on loan from General Motors, the show car for the re-introduction of the ZR1, last built in the early 1990s.

That day the staff at the museum moved over 20 vehicles from the rotunda. The Sky Dome exhibit area of the Museum is a separate structure connected to the main Museum. The Museum was closed to the public for the day to allow crews to carefully assess the situation. We will keep everyone informed as we know more.

To help the NCM defer some of the unexpected expense of the repairs to the floor and displays, the NCRS Foun-dation has made a five thousand dollar donation to the NCM. The NCRS Foundation will also match up to an ad-ditional five thousand dollar more for any NCRS Chapter donation to help with the sinkhole efforts. This could bring the total donation up and hopefully over $15,000, with a total of $10,000 from The Foundation plus Chap-ter donations. I would encourage all of the NCRS Chapters to participate in these efforts.

2014 NCRS National Convention

As you receive your Driveline please take some time a checkout all the events happening at our National Con-vention to be held at Overland Park Convention Center July 13-17. This year’s convention will be hosted by the Kansas City and Saint Louis Chapters. The show field will be a 60,000 square feet indoor convention center; the event will offer many events that are easily assessable from the host hotel.

Some of the many attractions include The National World War I Museum, The Steamboat Arabia Museum, we also we will host an evening event at the Armacost Automotive Museum. I would invite all of our members to come and enjoy Midwestern hospitality hope to see everyone there.

About ten people showed up for a tour of Paramount Ranch on Saturday, March15, 2014. The ranch is home to an old Western Movie Town, number 8 on the en-closed map, and an old racetrack, outlined in dark on the map. At 11:30, National Park Service Ranger Tom Young, shown below, gave our tour group a voice and DVD presentation of Paramount Ranch’s history that included the Western Movie Town and the old racetrack. The town was background for several movies and TV shows, including Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. Movie stars who were in films made at the ranch include Gary Cooper, W.C. Fields, Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Carole Lombard, Marlene Dietrich, Mae West, and Wm. Boyd.

The racetrack only operated for two years, 1956 and 1957. It closed after separate crashes result-ed in three deaths on a single weekend. Ranger Tom pointed out several problems with how the track was laid out. Cars were initially supposed to go in one direction, but the location of a curve near an opposite direction straight stretch was thought to cause too many accidents. So the car’s direction on the track was reversed.

Page 11: Corvette Museum Recovers - NCRS

Web Site: http://www.ncrs.org/scc/ 11 Email address: [email protected]

An up and over bridge near the end of a straight stretch and close to a curve was too much for car’s brakes of that day. And people who watch the rac-es were too close to the track. Ranger Tom showed us movie clips of cars racing around the actual track. The clips were from the movies: Bwana Devil 1952, Devil's Hairpin 1957, How to Stuff a Wild Bikini 1965, Munster, Go Home 1966, Spin Out 1966, and The Love Bug 1966 (All AAA rated movies?). At the conclusion of Ranger Tom’s presentation, we walked to the Western Town and went in the saloon (shown below), jail, and train station. We also went inside the movie sound stage made from an old horse barn. We then walked on a heavily

banked turn on the old racetrack. Most of the track has been broken up from extensive flooding over the years, but parts of it are still intact. The road we drove on to get to the Ranger Station was part of the original straight stretch. After three hours that passed very quickly, we left Paramount Ranch and went to WoodRanch for a BBQ lunch.

Tech Article- C 4 Corner By Don Troyer

As the cars age, you may find it necessary to work on things in the dash area. This could be just replacing light bulbs or removing major components. To work on or remove the instru-ment panel, radio, electronic climate control or many other items hidden in the dash area, you will need to remove the cluster bezel. Reading the procedures in the shop manual or just looking at the dash you will see that the headlight switch knob must be removed. If you have worked on C 1, C 2 or C 3, you know that this is rather easy. Just reach under the dash, push a button on the switch and you can remove the knob and shaft. Looking at the dash, it’s obvi-ous that is not the way to remove the knob on a C 4.

If you look closely at the base of the knob you will see a small notch. Something must be inserted in this notch to

release the knob. A tool that works very well for this is a small scribe with the end bent 90 degrees. This is a very inexpen-sive tool. Harbor Freight has a set with different

bends on the end for around $5.

To remove the knob, place the end of the scribe in the notch. Apply pressure to the top of the knob and pull back on the scribe. This will release the tension holding the knob in place. While holding and pulling, pull the unit towards you. The knob will slide off the shaft. It’s really easier than it sounds.

With the knob removed, you can see a spring steel insert inside the knob. This is what grips the shaft and prevents the knob from pulling off. Before you replace the knob, it’s a good idea to slightly bend the insert to-wards the center. This will ensure the insert grips the shaft when you put the knob back on.

Dear SCC,

I am writing to ask for help from your Chapter. I have a goal to locate as many Vietnam Veterans that own Corvettes. Although in the past year I have contacted over 650 Corvette Clubs plus Registries and Conuncils, in the 50 States and I know this can only be a small portion.

That said, this would be to the attention of any Vietnam Veterans that are members of the SCC.

There is a Corvette owner/Vietnam Veteran in Lexington NC that developed a Vietnam Veteran /Corvette sew on patch.

He provides this patch to Vietnam Veterans FREE of charge and he does not ask for compensation.

After reviewing this patch, I though how nice it would be if Vietnam Veterans could display this on their Corvettes showing their service to this country.

I discussed and received permission from him that I could have static clings made in honor and memory of our Vi-etnam Veterans. These static clings are 3” round and go in-side of your cars window.

Should any Vietnam Veterans of your Chapter like a static cling, please have them send me a self addressed/postage paid envelope and I will gladly provide them.

Should they be interested in the sew on patch they should contact Charles at [email protected] Thank you,

Don Zullinger 2928 Adams Drive, Chambersburg, PA 17201

Our next stop would be the Southern California Chap-ter meet at Big Bear Lake located in the San Bernardi-no National Forest west of the Los Angeles area. With a little difficulty, we finally located the Town and Country Lodge at Big Bear We had no sooner moved into our cabin when we were greeted by Dodie Con-ners and Al Gershen at the registration desk. The af-ternoon activities consisted of several outdoor tech sessions. Bob Conners was busy demonstrating fiber-glass repairs, and you could even find a part or two for sale. I was pleased to once again see my old friend Mike Ernst, who arrived with his silver 1962 Corvette. And several '83 Road Tour participants also arrived: Mike Pillsbury, Marv and Jan Stober, and Jim and Dee Gessner. Jim is an NCRS Advisory Board mem-ber, and had done much of the preparation work for the event since he lives in Big Bear. That evening a group of us headed into town to a local smorgasbord for a real "pig-out." It's amazing how Corvette people love to eat! Later, we assembled back at the lodge for a brief session on the new matrix judging system conducted by Mike Ernst and myself . Then, Mike Pillsbury showed slides and told the story about his recently acquired 1960 Corvette that he'd found in a junkyard. The car turned out to be one of

three original Corvettes prepared for the race at LeMans. He has done much research on the history and people in-volved with this car, and had the restored frame on display dur-ing the meet. The next morning all the Corvettes assem-bled at a paved area adjacent to the lake that was perfect for display-ing the cars. A judge's

breakfast meeting was held and the concours started at nine o'clock under the able guidance of Jeff Reade. An Oktoberfest celebration was also going on at Big Bear that weekend, which was enjoyed by some of the members, as well as scenic boat tours around the lake. Judging lasted into mid-afternoon. And I got a chance to shoot some photos of Mike Ernst and his car for a future Restorer cover article. Back at the lodge by five o'clock and social hour be-gan, followed by an outdoor barbeque complete with a western band. Jim and Dee Gessner were the chief cooks for this event manning the grills with those big juicy steaks. And love those Big Bear Beans! A scheduled hayrack ride that night never really got go-ing as there was only one wagon pulled by two horses, and it just wouldn't move with 50 people. We were all up early the next morning for a caravan around Big Bear Lake and on to the famous Apple Valley Inn for an awards brunch. Chapter Chairman Bill Norris introduced the guest speaker, Mr. Dick Gullstrand, who entertained everyone with his many stories about his days as a noted Corvette race driver. This was followed by Jeff Reade presenting the con-course flight awards. Also, Howard Kreutzinger re-ceived a chapter plaque signifying his as the most im-proved car for the year. I did say a few words to the

group about the 1984 NCRS Road Tour and Conven-tion at Copper Mountain and was amazed that many Southern California Chapter members were already planning to attend. I wouldn't be surprised if the next Road Tour surpasses 50 cars. Following many goodbyes in the parking lot, every-one departed for home. Except me. I had orders that we were going to see the beach while in California, so we spent a day and a half at Malibu before heading home.

I certainly had some good times at these two chapter events and met some great people. The Mid-Atlantic

and Southern California NCRS Chapters have no lackof enthusiasm and are to be commended for put-ting together fine events. I look forward to visiting

them again.

SCC Chapter & Member News - Open Letter to the NCRS In life it is not often that one gets an opportunity to do something that he or she absolutely loves to do. I am one of the fortunate who got that chance. For the past 7 years it has been my fortune and absolute pleasure to serve as NCRS President. There have been few things that I've enjoyed more than serving as president of this great organization. I have also had the extreme pleasure of working with some of the most talented people, several of them are employees but most of them are volunteers. These folks have dedicated a large portion of their time to help make and keep the NCRS the premiere automobile organization that is has become. For this I need to thank them for their enthusiasm, commitment and continued dedication that gave me the drive over the past decade while serving on the board of direc-tors. Looking back over my tenure as this organization's president I am truly proud of the accomplishments we have made as a Board in serving the membership. A few of those accomplishments are the new web-site, TDB, online ads, full color Driveline and Restorer magazines, Historical Documentation Service which we have recently added Camaro, Chevelle and Nova! One of the items I am most proud of is the awarding of our scholarships from the NCRS Foundation. There comes a time when new drive and enthusiasm is needed to keep an organization fresh and moving forward. I have decided not to run for the office of president at the upcoming National Board of Directors meeting, I do plan to stay on as Region III Director. I would like to thank my fellow board members and employees for their support over the years and the overwhelming encouragement and support I have received from the membership. I can truly say that I have enjoyed the journey and the friendships made along the way. All the best... Vito

Hey members!

For those of you who have been working on and restoring Corvettes since "back in the day" and can remember that mentor who helped you through your projects and an-swered all your questions, now is your chance to pay it forward. We are looking for members who have expertise and restoration experience with Corvettes who might be willing to serve as a mentor to other club members who might need someone to turn to for answers or help as they restore their car. If you would be interested in serving as a mentor and helping other Corvette owners, please con-tact Rusty Hobbs at 949.645.9353 and let him know for what year/years you would like to serve as a mentor.

Are you restoring something on your own Corvette? Do you have

questions?

We’re here to help! Don’t hesitate! Contact our SCC Technical Advisor Rusty Hobbs at 949.645.9353. We’ll get you through it!
