j2 The homo rule county convention which met at Wailuku lalThursday, and caucussed till Saturday afternoon, adjourned overto September 23, without making any nominations, for two reasons.First, tbey were unable to find men in thoir party whom they feltsure would be able to properly perform the arduous duties whichwill be imposed ou the first county officers of Maui. Secondly,there is a disposition among the better element of them to work in

harmony with the republicans and democrats of Maui in the selec-tion of proper men for the oflices. Now, the republican conventionmeets on Monday, and in that party and among the democrats of

Maui are the real brains, intelligence and education which tit menfor official positions. Consequently it the republican conventionsees fit to meet the .spirit of compromise which prevails among thehome rule leaders it might possibly result in the formation of aticket of able and dependable men who would receive the supportof both parties.

The duties of county officers, as laid down in tlio caunty governinent bill, is mighty interesting roadiug just now, and a carefulstudy of these duties should cause any aspirant, who is not sure ofhis qualifications, to shrink from allowing his name to be used ascandidate for term. Take tlie office of the auditor or treasurer, for instance and read the enumerated list of their respectiveduties, and it will be seen that in either instance, a lack of ripeand mature knowledge and understanding of theso duties and re-

sponsibilities in holders of either office will probably cost their re-

spective bondsmen a pnetty penny. Of a certain prominent andhonest but illiterate proposed candidate for treasurer it is saidthat he can hire a clerk to do his writing and figuring. In thatease jt would be wiser to elect the clerk as treasurer, The Newsstrongly urges that each aspirant for office get and read from thecounty bill the duties prescribed for office he seeks, and thena?k himself honestly if he feels capable of. performing its duties.

S&l The idea lies in the minds of people generally in a huge andnebulous form thar; there is an immense tourist travel waiting

. somewhere and somehow to be directed to the Islands. The ideais an absolutely correct one, and it is only when men like TomJUcKay approach the subject thai a clear light is thrown on theproposition. There are thousands of people in the states and inthe orient who would visit the Islands if they were properly re- -

. quested and advised. When the Islands wake up and send one ortwo live men to the coast and eastern states and one to the orient,well supplied with tourist literature and enthusiasm, streams oftravellers will begin to flow this way. The work has been begunin Honolulu, but what has been done is only a tentative beginning.The people of the other Islands should stand by and assist thepeople of Honolulu in putting the tourist movement on a livefooting.

5$ The people of Maui as a general rule have been remiss in the.matter of supporting the movement to encourage tourist travel,and yet it is quite true that, next to sugar, a large tourist travelwould prove the most valuable aset of the Islands. To illustrate,an appeal was recently made through the News for scenic viewsof Maui, many of which exist, for the purpose of hcving then pub-lished, and not one single response met the appeal. If Maui hopesto shire in the rich blessings of tourist travel it is only right andfair that the citizens of Maui should exert themselves to createand encourage the tourist movement.

fjjjj It is simply absurd to claim that no other'industry save sugarwill prove profitable on Maui. There are hundreds of small tractsavailable which will one day be owned and cultivated profitably.True the products will not be the same as those of the temperatezones, and costly experiments will have to be made in order toprove the soil and climate so far as its adaptability to paying pro-ducts is concerned, but the problem is already beginning to workitself out, and with. proper fostering, the time is not far oft whent.ie minor industries on Maui will prove a large source of revenue.

While the cane planters of Maui fully understand thevalue of the forests as water preservers, still it is well to havedefinite lines laid down for the protection and increase of our forestareas, and tho visit of Forester H ill should prove the initial stop

action, not so miuiii in the matter of reforesting us ofsafe guarding the forests we no a- - have.

Ditch Notes.

Mr. M. M. O'Sliaiighnessy returned from Kauai by Wednesday's Maui,and'' favored the News with someextremely interesting facts concern-ing the immense ditch contracts whichhe is hardling. T!;e big ditch atMakaweli is now completed and readyto be turned ovr to the plantations.This ditch has a daily capacity of

over 70,000,000 gallons, built as sub-

stantially as were the old Romanaqueducts and it will doubtless standfor centuries as a D'ounment to theskill and foresight of its builder andprojectors.

Excellent progress is being madeon the new big ditch which is to sup-

ply central Maui with irrigatingwater. Over 4000 feet of tunnel wererun last month, which is a tecordbreaking month, and by tho first ofnext July the ditch will be completedto the head of the present ditches. Inthe meantime, work has been begunon the lower end of the ditch aud itis probable that another year willsee the waters of east Maui flowiiigon the Kihei Plantation. The actualvalue of this permanent water sup-p- l

to central Maui in the future isalmost beyond computation, as it willalmost do away with pumping plantsas well - as to largely increase thearea of sugar lands.

Forestry Matters.

The United States Foresty Bureauis taking a practical interest In

forestry preservation on the Islands,and has sent Forester Hall fromWashington to investigate and re-

port on forestry matters and cognatesubjects. Mr. Hall has spent the lastten days on Maul, a large part of thetime in the saddle, and has made someinteresting observations of the con-

ditions that exist here. He statesthat at present more attention shouldbe paid to the preservatun of theforests we have than to the matterof reforesting. He states howeverthat in due time the matter of re-

foresting should be taken up, and in-

timates that the U. S. ForsetiyBureau "at "Washington will lendmaterial aid at the proper time.

He visited the Kula forest reserve,and expresses himself strongly iu thematter of protecting and extendingtneso forests above the 4,000 footlevel. It is stated that Col. W. H.Cornwell, who has a lease on someof these lands, has offered to sur-render his lease to all above the 4000foot level, even including some goodcorn land, provided ho can securecompensating leases on 'lands on alower level. Forester Hall stronglyapproves of the proposition, and asSupt. Cooper and L. A. Thurstonwere in company with Mr. Hall whilehe was inspecting these lands andthe Polipoli springs, it is possiblethat the government will seo its waytoexchanga leases with Mr. Corn-wel- l.

Mr. Hall also visited the forestreserves at the head of the new bigditch, and finds that they arc beingreasonably well protected. He alsosuggested the planting of rubbertrees, although productive trees arenot'so much the case of the ForestryBureau as are the preservation ofthe forests themselves.

Archibald D.tdds, one of the newteachers at Lahainaluna Seminary,has been transferred from the Schoolon Lanai.

"The Morning Star," an enterpris-ing Japnuese monthly, is publishedby the Japanese M. E. Missiou in thistown. H. Tamaki is the editor. Thetypographical appearance of thepaper is attractive, and doubtless itsliterary merits correspond.
