Brother Knights
There will be no Business Meeting held during December – we will resume with our Business Meeting on Thursday, January 18, 2019 at 6:30pm.
Before our Business Meeting in November we welcomed Ryan
Heid as our newest Brother to our Council. Pictures of the event
are in the newsletter. Please welcome Ryan and help him feel
the brotherhood.
This past month we unfortunately bid farewell to our Brother and
Sir Knight Charles Vincent he will be missed. Please pray for his
reception into the Kingdom of God.
Many of our Knight answered the call during the year to volun-
teer. I want to congratulate all of you for your service and the
results that benefitted many. The volunteer activities covered
service to the Church, Council, Community, Fundraising for the
Intellectually Disabled, Family, Youth Programs, Coats for Kids Pro-
Life and Building the Domestic Church while strengthening our
Parish. Well done and a round of applause – let’s finish the year
strong and kick of the new year of service in the same fashion.
Congratulations to our awardees for November 2018; they are shining examples the values of both our Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Brother Knights,
One of the four principles of the Knights of Columbus is charity. Our Council responded to that principle this past month in our efforts to collect coats for kids in need and collecting after Masses for our Veteran’s residing at the Vic-tory House in Walterboro. We collected 32 coats for kids during this drive. Our “Coats for Kids” organizer Andrew Folz delivered those coats to the Dorchester County Chil-dren’s Advocacy Center. We met with Aaronette Talton and Alexis Aiken of the Advocacy Center who assured us the coats are vitally important and will go to children in need. Knights collected after two weekend Masses in November for our Veteran’s at the Victory House. Overall, it was a wonderful showing of support from our parish in providing undergarments, toiletries, sundry items, reading material, games and over $300 cash for our vets. Lucien Bois-sonneault our Victory House organizer delivered the items. After delivering the coats for kids this past week, I had a thought about this upcoming Advent and Christmas season. As grandparents, parents and family members we purchase many material gifts for the youngsters in our lives. What is the longevity or value of those gifts in the hearts of our youth? What lesson do they learn from the gift? Maybe this year you purchase a gift or two for someone in need. Possibly a coat for a child, or a nice story book or a deck of cards. Give the gift and then make arrangements to deliver the gifts with your grandkids or kids to a homeless shelter to deliver a coat, maybe visit a hospice to read a story to some-one suffering, or visit the Victory House and play a game of cards with a Vet. I bet your grandkid or child will remember that experience more than any material gift they receive and will gain a true understanding of giving. God Bless and Merry Christmas.

Dear Brother Knights
As we all know, one of the primary reasons we were drawn to the Knights of Columbus were the many charitable endeavors of our organization. I think it is very important to remember that principle when we are asked to contribute to our council's pro-grams.

Brother Knights,
We wrapped up two activities this month that I wanted to share with you.
The first was the Coats for Kids coat drive. Thanks to your generosity we collected 32 coats that were delivered to the Dorchester Children's Advocacy Center on Monday the 19th. The advocates at the center expressed to Tony Panek and myself that the coats were greatly needed and appreciated. Apparently with the recent cool temperatures they had just received calls from some of their families ask-ing if coats were available - so the timing of the donation was ideal.
The 2nd activity we completed this month was the Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest. We had 13 entries from the 8th graders at Summerville Catholic School. The essays were judged by Toney Pank, Chris Beumel, Mike Ellegood, and myself. (As I mentioned at the business meeting, I can't thank Tony, Chris, and Mike enough for their help with the judging.) The judging was difficult, because by in large - the kids did a great job with the essays. It was apparent that the students put a lot of thought and effort into them. I will be reaching out to the school to set up a time to recognize the participants, and to award the winning entrant with their first place prize. I will also be forwarding the winning entry to our State Council. Given the quality of essays, I wouldn't be surprised if our council followed up last years state champion entry with another state winner.
I hope you all enjoy the Thanksgiving holidayThanks,

Good evening Brother Knights, You are in good standing at this time with Su-preme. At this time it looks like you have 3 insurance members and 3 new Knights keep up the good recruiting in December. I would like to apologize for the lateness of your Star Award. The State Council wrote Supreme and they told me it would be sent out this week. You have all worked really hard last year to get it. I will get it to you as soon as I get it hopefully by the first week of De-cember. We are having our Midyear District Deputies Meeting in Hilton Head at the end of the month and our State Deputy sent out a request for a do-nation to the Felician Sisters who help the poor in Williamsburg County, South Carolina. The Sis-ters will be the guests at the Dinner in Hilton Head on December 1, 2018. Would your Council be able to make a donation and I will take the check on the 30th of November? Thank you all for what you have done for our Council. There is a wreath laying ceremony which will be happening on December 15, 2018 if you would like to purchase some wreaths please contact Jim Range. I sent a message about wreaths to Deputy Grand Knight and Grand Knight. Please sell your Raffle tickets that you receive so we can have all the money by the Grand Knights Workshop in February. Please keep our Church in your prayers and say a Rosary a day. Thank you and God Bless you all. Merry Christmas to you all. May Jesus be with you in your hearts. Joe Friend District Deputy #5

Brotjher Knights, .My father was born in 1894 and one of the great achievements
he spoke of was the change in transportation he witnessed. As he
grew up he drove a horse and buggy and then saw a man land on
the moon. It is hard to believe that this amount of change in tech-
nology would ever happen again.
As I look back at the development of computers in my workplace,
we were excited about a Univac 1004 that had 4K memory. As an
accountant, I saw in a short period of time, large computers that
needed many human resources to operate give way to personal
computers. What was once unimaginable in both operational
speed and storage has been surpassed. Today, it is not unusual
for a cell phone to have terabytes of storage and perform opera-
tions in milliseconds that took hours to accomplish with our early
batch processing systems.
Man’s ingenuity seems to have no limit as to what he can accom-
plish. He creates from an idea and with persistence he brings it
into existence. However; he can never create from nothingness
nor add a single new thing to what God has already fashioned.
For God, nothingness was a part of what he used for creation by
placing it in reality. For man, nothingness is only a concept and
impossible to use to create.
God created man whose life and existence is totally dependent
upon God. It seems to be a part of man’s nature to attempt to
free himself from this truth and be sufficient to himself. This
attempt is better known as sin. As experience has shown, our de-
cisions have taken us from the person who God created, to a per-
son who will experience death, the total separation from God.
God’s mysterious way will never leave man hopeless. As many
times as man said no to God, God always found new ways to en-
gage man trying to bring him back to the purpose of why he creat-
ed him. We know his final attempt as “The Word became flesh.”
The nothingness of which we were created becomes celebrated
through the birth of Christ.
As we prepare for Christmas we need to allow the “Word” to be
the basis of our decisions. Remember, Christ is both God and Man
and as such He overcame death by recreating man by giving him
rebirth through the atonement for our sin. .
Christmas is the birth of Christ, but also the promise of our rebirth.
We should prepare for Christmas because our life depends up it

Lecturer Deacon Thomas
My Dear Brother Knights,
As we move into the Advent Season in the next week, I
would ask you to take up some special activates to
properly enter the season that calls us to prepare to cele-
brate the greatest event in human history, when our lov-
ing God’s son entered our world and became truly man.
Please avoid as much as possible the merchant’s Christ-
mas season, but be ready to celebrate the true Christmas
season that begins on December the 25th and goes to
January 13th. Perhaps you could leave up your nativity
set in a prominent place in your home until the Feast of
the Baptism of the Lord and explain to your family that
we celebrate a Christmas season which is not the same as
the merchant’s Christmas season. Don’t be afraid to
greet people with’ Merry Christmas’ or’ Blessed Christ-
mas’, and avoid the secular saying, happy holidays. If
you have the Keep Christ in Christmas car magnet, please
display it in the Christmas season. These are just a few
suggestions that we all can do to properly celebrate the
birth of the Christ, and remind society that the true gift
of this season, is the gift of the Christ Child.

Brother Knights, This year's Tootsie Roll Campaign was a very satisfying and rewarding achievement. We raised $1,501.03 for intellectually disabled people in our community! At our last business meeting, our officers voted to contribute $6,000 from our council funds to the Dorchester County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs. Once again, thank you to those knights who gave their valuable time to our campaign. Council 11910 is making a difference in our community! in gratia cantante's!

True or false. We learn in the 1st degree during the Deputy Grand Knights speech that insurance with
our order is voluntary. The question I present to you is has insurance always been voluntary with the
Knights?
In 1952 insurance became a voluntary aspect with the Knights of Columbus. This was for several rea-
sons; One - The insurance side grew to over $1,000,000,000 at that time; Two - Because our numbers
were dwindling at that point for new members.
So. we will come back to this later… But a brother Knight recently asked me the concept of inactive
members and what they entail. After insurance was made voluntary, the Knights had to come up with a
different status for each member or associate. There are 5 different statuses for people associated with
the Knights of Columbus. There are Non-Members, which are typically spouses and children that have
insurance with the order. There are Prior Members who are associate members that have since been
dropped from the order. Then there are Inactive Members. these are members that have insurance but
have since been dropped from the council for Nonpayment of dues. However again since they have the
insurance policy, they technically cannot be dropped completely.
Continue on PAGE 8
Page 8
What the home office does however is that they take part of the dividend for that policy each year and
that will pay for the per capita. If this person ever drops their policy, they immediately become a prior
member. The two most known membership statuses are the Associate and the Insurance Members.
Associate Members receive that term because they are considered associated with the Knights of Co-
lumbus, where as Insurance Members have that term because they have an insurance policy. Now why
is that? In fraternal organizations when you have an insurance policy with the order, you essentially
are a stockholder in that organization. You pretty much own the Knights of Columbus. When the or-
der first started…if you remember the story of the little black hat that was passed around, well it be-
came such that those contributions became dues each year a member would pay into the Knights and
those dues bought you a $1,000 Life Insurance Policy that paid out upon your passing. Again, this was
traditional in all fraternal societies, but as the order and the business side grew and insurance became
mandatory, that $1,000 benefit became something new yet old for the members. Who reading this
knows that when you join the Knights you and your spouse immediately have a $1,000 accidental
death benefit? That benefit grows $500 each year and will max out at $2,500. After the age of 65 it
begins to reduce each year by $500 where it levels out again at $1,000. that is what became of that
original Life Policy
Now there is a well-known issue that occurs between the fraternal and the business side of the
Knights of Columbus. One can look no further than the new “E” Member Program. And this is
where brothers are concerned that its nothing more than an insurance ploy. To those brothers I say
that you are correct and incorrect TOO! If we go back to our founding by the venerable Father
McGivney and for anyone that has read the book “A History of Fraternalism,” a 100-year history of
the Knights of Columbus. It states on page 13, “perhaps encouraged by Bishop McMahon to explore
various alternative paths rather than to establish a particular society. There is no doubt that he was
deeply interested in pursuing the topic of a Catholic Fraternal Insurance society among groups of
Catholic laymen of Newhaven. Thus, the Knights of Columbus did not originate out of some plan for
a national organization but developed from the simpler notion that some sort of local fraternal insur-
ance society was needed. And under our insurance history on the supreme website it states that Father
McGivney made an insurance organization out of it which was its primary purpose and it has never
been otherwise. So again, Father McGivney’s primary goal was to establish an insurance society. Stay
with me now - please don’t throw the tomatoes yet. The operating budget each year with the Knights
of Columbus is $2 billion dollars. This as I mentioned in previous speeches comes from the insurance
side of the Life Insurance, the Annuities, and Long-Term Care. $4 Million of that $2 Billion comes
from the per capita. That’s the monies that are due from councils each year for their membership.
That $4 million doesn’t even cover the cost of the Columbian Magazine that is sent out each month.
So, the insurance side is what funds the Knights of Columbus with all the materials that help make
councils succeed and grow. But here is where those that were correct earlier are now incorrect. Liter-
ally nobody joins the Knights of Columbus to buy insurance. It is through the amazing works of the
Fraternal Order that attracts New Brothers to want to join each and every year. When I joined in
2004, I didn’t ask Louis Meluso, hey do you guys sell insurance? No, I joined because of the charitable
works

Ask yourselves as you read this, why did I join the Knights of Columbus? I can assure most of you
will say it’s not because of the insurance, but of all the great things we do for the community, the
church and the world. The Fraternal and the business side of the Knights of Columbus have a very
symbiotic relationship. We cannot exist without the other. So, this gentleman, in a nutshell explains the
different status’ and the story of the fraternal and business side of the Knights of Columbus. There
should not be any division at all because in the end we are all one with one common goal. To take care
of the widows and orphans of a Departed Brother while leaving an impression upon the Church, the
