Members of Council 9884 and their families attended this year’s Christmas Party on December 11th in the St Philip CLC. A great meal

was served and prepared by Louis Hernandez, Gary and Dale Marco and PGK Steve Robillard. Christmas music played during the event, provided by DGK Dan Jacobs. Once everyone had finished dinner, to the surprise of all the kids, Santa appeared with a bag full of presents for the good boys and girls. It was amazing to see the faces of the kids as they walked up to Santa after he had called their names. Most if not all the kids got pictures taken with Santa. Even group of Lady Knights came up to get a picture with Santa. Most of the adults and some of the kids participated in our classic White Elephant gift exchange. There were all sorts of gifts, some exchanged three times (wine bottles) and some you couldn’t give away (first aid kit). It was in the middle of a busy week but everyone young and not so young had a good time. It was lots of fun and I hope we do it again next year.

On behalf of the Council, I send special thanks to Boyd Burris and Mike McSantardle, for their part in this fun event. Part of the time, these two gentlemen were both

outside in the cold rain, Boyd with flashlights and flares in hand, directing Santa to stop his magic sleigh on the CLC roof top. Eddie Martinez Grand Knight

Family of the Month The Knight from our Family of the month was born into a family that already bore two other sons and eventually added a fourth. Mom & Dad were always supportive of the boy’s wishes to be the distinctive person he is today. Of course he always looked up to his older brothers for their advice but he was the one who watched out for his younger brother! Our family Knight brother was born in the nineteenth most populous city in the southwestern US. His home town may be in the southwest but at times experiences that northern weather element commonly called SNOW! BRRRRrrrrrr. Mechanical engineering may be our Knight’s career but his life is his beautiful wife and their daughter. Events such as the Monthly Pancake Breakfast, Christmas parking and SPY activities, Rosary Prayer Leader, Burger Burns are among the Knight’s activities while the Mrs. Can typically bee seen aiding in activities such as the Lady Knights Bake Sales and Blood Donation visits, to name only two. Often, their daughter can be found in attendance I wish to introduce Danny, Nellie & Naomi Mia Apodaca as Council 9884’s Knight Family of the Month. By the way, Danny and Nellie hail from the City of El Paso, Texas, while Naomi was born here. Fraternally, Gary Marco, Family Activity Director

Two Casino Nights were firmed up for 2015 just as this article was written. One is scheduled for Electronic Transaction Consultants Corp. (ETCC) in Richardson. They have something to do with toll road tags. This has been booked for January 31, 2015 and 23-dealers are needed. Check your email for a “Request for Dealers” with details to follow as they become available. The Second is being scheduled for our Bi-Annual Granbury Council 9748, on March 28, 2015, and 25-dealers are needed to pull off this event. So please RSVP with Bill, soon. Just remember, my brother Knights, we all had to learn what we now take for granted, so fear not to come out and try, even if you've never dealt before. Secondly, the event is an exciting time and that it becomes a lot of fun and makes you a better Knight. Thank you very much, PoC: Bill Miller, Casino Ops Mgr 469-223-2285 (c) [email protected] .

Congratulations to Troy Lirette, Dennis Hartford, David Duncan, Chris Kulas and Drew Nicholls as they become the newest members of our Council in a First Degree Exemplification in St Philip CLC on Sunday, December 14, 2014. Please congratulate these men

when you meet them, at our 2015 business meetings or in church. The degree team did an outstanding job of pulling off this ceremony, as always, although, a little late in getting started due to the Carter Blood Drive. That is, I think they got a few extra donors who came in late. The Attending Members of our Degree Team were, Steve Robillard, Mike McArdle, Eddie Martinez, Dan Jacobs , Butch Polasek, Bill Miller and of course the maestro, Mike Crivello. Thanks goes to St Mark's in Denton, Council 12553 degree team for helping us out. That is, Sean Stenovitch and Mike Melo drove down to perform two required roles for this ceremony. And congrats on your Council membership quota! In addition, these brother Knights brought three candidates. Finally, thanks go to our Council members who showed up to help with setup, the degree and tear down and those who came to support and observe the degree. PoC: Bill Miller, First Degree Team Captain 469-223-2285 (c) [email protected] .

Hello Fellow Knights By the time you read, this the celebration of our dear Lord’s birth has happened and the year of 2014 has nearly passed by. So looking to 2015 I am excited about the future of St. Philip the Apostle and Council 9884. I am fortunate enough to be a part of the building committee that has been asked to help our parish transition into a new location that will be bigger and hopefully Knights friendly. Bob Dubek, myself and a group of knights have met to be sure we can be a strong part of this growth. Also for 2015 we will be kicking off what could be our largest fund raiser ever. It is an art and collectables auction being presented by Marlin Art Company. This gala event will take place on Jan. 24th. We are working at making this an upscale event. We will be using all the nice things that allow us to call this a gala. When was the last time you went out to an event that you dressed up to attend? If you have not done anything with the Knights lately this might be the thing to attend. It is $25 a couple and for that you get food, drink, fun and fellowship. We have good food vendors and the atmosphere will be elegant for sure. You can talk to Eddie or me to get tickets or more information about the event. To reach all members we are trying something different for the Knights Connect event the last week in Jan. We will are going to have an evening at the Eagle Gun Range in Lewisville. Look for the details on the Council website! Also for the New Year we want all our Knights to be able to be identified as such. So we are going to make a deal for you. If you attend a meeting in January or February, you can sign up for a KofC shirt. We will have

a choice of two colors and size of your choice. You can pick maroon or navy

blue. We will have one of each on display at the two meetings. But the deal is to get a shirt you have to attend a meeting to order it and attend to pick it up. Give us a chance to show how much fun and informative a Council business meeting can be. We are the largest ministry in the parish. I want to try to talk to all of our members because I don’t think I know half of you. I see many of you at Mass with your badge on but I don’t know who you are. I feel a real pride when I put on my badge to let others know that I am a member of a group that the rest of the parish knows they can count on being there when they are needed. The responsibility I feel when I put on the badge or shirt goes to the thing our organization is all about: Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. When was the last time you did something with the Knights? The Pancake Breakfast is always a good time shared by all. We always have to scramble to get help for the CheerFest. There are some casino nights coming up that I know will need a number of extra dealers. Those are a sure event a good time. If you don’t know how to deal, no problem, half the other dealers didn’t know how to either when they first came out. We are going to need a bit of help at the art auction. The Corporate Communion is always a good event that helps show our solidarity at Mass. The Respect for Life Rosary on the first Saturday always has room for more. You made a pledge when you joined the Knights. Do you feel like you have upheld your commitment to the Knights? Ono or two events a year is not too much burden on anyone! I will be in touch!! Fraternally, Dan Jacobs Deputy Grand Knight

Greetings ,brothers. It is a privilege to publish the accounts of the activities of one of the best Councils in the great State of Texas. From CheerFest to PCB’s, Bishops Pickup to Burger Burns, from Casino Nights to First Saturday Respect for Life Rosaries to name just a few of the 40+ activities; the Council is awesome. Yours truly partakes in a number of these opportunities for charity. What I have to tell you now is not easy to type. I have prayed over it, contemplated “what ifs” and discussed it with other brothers. I have decided to retire as the Council’s Newsletter Editor. I have had a great time serving you each month.

The “Thank You”s sent my way for a great issue have been most rewarding. However, the time has come for me to say Thank You back and move on to other endeavors. This opens the door of opportunity for some brother Knight to discover a God-gifted talent that has lain dormant lo these many years. I didn’t know what I could do when I started. So come on! Who wants to give it their best shot? I’ll help you get started, then, like a fledging bird getting booted out of the nest, you’ll be flying on your own.

So this is my farewell issue. I pray it is as good as ever. See you at the Council Meetings and Knights events! Peace, LJ

We are off to a great start collecting dues this year! Many thanks to our Brother Knights who have sent in their checks, trusted me with cash, or used the PayPal service to pay their dues.

Here’s an update as of December 20: We sent out 1st Notices on December 4th, 233 by

email and 32 by US Mail. This saved us a ton of postage, so again, Thank You!!! If you did not get your dues notice please let me know.

Please note that Honorary Life Members, Honorary Members, Members of the Clergy and Seminarians will not get a dues statement since our Council does not charge dues for members in these categories.

I will begin mailing 2015 membership cards the week of Christmas. We need to thank our Worthy Grand Knight who kept the tradition of hand signing all 300+ membership cards!

Returned Dues Payments

Some of you have contacted me that you mailed your dues payment and it was returned as undeliverable by the Post Office. I apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate you letting me know about this. I contacted the Postmaster at the Lewisville post office and the issue has been resolved. In order to save you some postage, you can turn your dues into Jackie when you go to Mass on Sunday or to me at our next business meeting on JANUARY 8.

How can I pay? 1. By Check or Money Order Payable to:

Knights of Columbus Council 9884.

2. By Credit Card (Using PayPal) $ Go to the Council Website:

http://kofcknights.org/CouncilSite/?CNO=9884 $ On the left side of the screen, click on NEWS AND

ANNOUNCEMENTS $ You’ll see the Fraternal Survey at the top (DON’T

FORGET TO FILL THAT OUT!!!) $ Scroll down and the next item is ONLINE

PAYMENT – COUNCIL DUES. $ Click on “Click to pay Council Dues online” $ You’ll be directed to the Council

website. Enter $35.00 in the box on the left and select how you want to pay on the right. Follow the instructions, depending on your choice. If you run into difficulties, give me a call and we’ll walk through it.

IMPORTANT!!! IMPORTANT!!! IMPORTANT!!!

$ If you are a student, your dues are $17.50!!!!! If you get a bill for $35, I need to adjust your record. Please call me or email me.

$ If you are disabled, you may qualify for a dues exemption. There’s a form that needs to be completed. Please call me and I’ll send you the form. Do not pay your dues until we know if the exemption was approved.

$ Some of us are going through difficult times. We do not want to lose a Brother Knight because of financial difficulties. Please call me and we can discuss some alternatives.

I would like to close by addressing a comment that comes up every year: • “I have moved and no longer attend St. Philip.”

o The fact that you have moved to another parish or another geographical location does not mean that you are no longer a member of our Council. It also does not mean that you are no longer a Knight of Columbus. o The Knights of Columbus is a world-wide fraternal organization. Our Councils are not directly associated with a specific parish. Our council, for example, serves not only St. Philip’s but Our Lady of Lebanon. Your current membership card will allow you to attend meetings anywhere. o You will remain on our membership roster until you transfer your membership to another Council. You do not have to transfer if you don’t want to. We have Brother Knights living in all parts of the US who have kept their membership with our Council.

If you want to transfer, you have to be a member in good standing with our Council. This means, that you have to pay your dues to us. Once I receive notification of your application for transfer, I transfer any pro-rated remaining dues to your new Council. If you wish to transfer and need help, let me know and I’ll work with you.

I hope this explanation helps. As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Again, thanks for your help in paying your dues promptly!!!!

Brother Knights, here is an update on some great

events we completed, so well supported by you, and a couple of events coming up.

Parish Blood Drive We Gave the Gift of Life this Advent Season! The Parish Blood Drive, sponsored by the Wellness Ministry and the Knights of Columbus was an overwhelming success! On Sunday, December 14, Carter BloodCare collected 35 unit,, more than double our projected goal. As had been hoped, holding the drive in conjunction with the KofC Pancake Breakfast inspired many parishioners to donate. The following Knights donated blood: Phil Del Vecchio, Bob Dubek, Dan Jacobs (Double Red), Chuck Epley, LJ, Eddie Martinez, Bryan Phelan, and James Seastrom. Three Brother Knights would have donated blood but were unable to do so because they are regular donors, and the blood drive was too soon for them to donate. Finally, at least six Lady Knights donated blood. Note to all us guys: Of the 35 donors, 14 were men and 21 were women. So, how about a challenge to the guys for next time around?

CCA Giving Tree at Vista Ridge Mall My thank you to all my Brother Knights and their family members for stepping up and volunteering to pick up

toys at the CCA Giving Tree at Vista Ridge Mall between November 28 and December 23, 2014. The event was a success and everyone’s efforts, during

the course of the 26 days the tree was up are very much appreciated.

CCA Christmas Store Tear Down Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 8:00AM This is at 200 Mill Street in Old Town Lewisville. Typically, the tear down takes less than two hours. An announcement will be sent out, asking for volunteers, the week before the event. As usual everyone’s help will be very much appreciated. Thanks! --Dave Jones PoC: David Jones, Community Activity Director 972-510-9275, [email protected]
