Knights in the Spotlight

The Flower Mound Christmas parade is a yearly event. The parade starts with the fire engines in the front which, when you think about it, is where they need to be if they are called for an emergency.

Right behind the fire engines were your Knights of Columbus, proudly displaying the American Flag and the Knights of Columbus banner. We have been involved with the Flower Mound Christmas parade for many years and I hope to continue doing the same for a long time to come. See our photo later in this issue.

Next year, I hope you will join us. You do not need to be in the 4th degree. You can just wear a Knight of Columbus Polo shirt. When the call goes out to join us at the parade I hope you really give it your consideration.

When Asked, Knights Come Through

Khoi Tran is one of our newest deacons. While he has been in the seminary our council would periodically send him money. I remember sending him checks when I was the Financial Secretary years ago.

Khoi Tran made a simple request to me. He was in the market for a new automobile and wanted to know if the Knights knew anyone who could help him out.

I forwarded the email to our Vocations Advocate, SK Lawrence Jermyn. The Advocate’s duties are to be the ‘go to guy’ and seek to help our clergy in any way he can. LJ sent Deacon Khoi’s email to all our Knights.

The response was immediate. Four Knights responded within 2 HOURS with practical solutions and a fifth the following morning! It was really amazing, but not surprising, how quickly our council responded. You can really be proud of how your fellow Knights responded.

Respect for Life Director Youth Activity Director

Church Activity Director Admissions Committee

Respect for Life Director Promote and support the Order’s pro-life efforts by displaying materials featuring the theme, “Defend Life” or “A People for

Life.”

•Contact right-to-life committees or other pro-life organizations in your area. Volunteer support of manpower and perhaps, finances. •Promote letter-writing campaigns to the state and provincial legislatures; have members write letters. Express your views clearly, firmly and courteously, ask questions and demand answers. •Give gifts of thanks and congratulations to women who have “chosen life” by carrying their babies to term. •Consider donating Christmas gifts to newborns and their single mothers temporarily housed in shelters. Work with Loreto House to keep their babies or place them for adoption. •Lead the “Pray the rosary to end abortion” on First Saturday’s. Organize monthly prayer vigils at an abortion clinic, Routh Street Women’s Clinic is one. •Speak out against the Death Penalty. Work with TCADP on how to pursue the effort locally.

Admissions Committee We are in need of six Knights to serve on this committee, which screens applications and interviews candidates.

If any Brother is interested,

PoC: Boyd Burris, Admissions Chairman [email protected], 214-507-8420 or 817-430-8406 Youth Activity Director

Today’s youth, the leaders of tomorrow, are looking for a challenge, for responsibility, for faith and trust.

Yet, despite their commitments and dedication, the youth of the world are often condemned because of the uncontrolled actions of a minority of young people. As Knights of Columbus, it is our responsibility to provide youth with the means and the opportunities to become personally committed and involved in meeting the challenges of our times.

There is a great deal more all of us can do to improve our youth programs. Recruit more men from the council level to work with young people. These adult leaders will help to mold the youth of today into the influential citizens of tomorrow.

Exert more positive and constructive influence on your young people by becoming involved with them. Pay more attention to what they are saying. Demonstrate your support by sponsoring a Columbian Squires circle, aiding the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, promoting the Boy Scouts or helping to combat drug and alcohol abuse.

Numerous other avenues are always open in helping to build leaders for the future.

Church Activity Director Appeal for greater unity, understanding and ecumenism among all religions. Initiate those programs through which

members can practice their Catholic duties in the fields of charity, devotion and education.

The lay apostolate must respond to the constant call for active involvement in the work of the Church. Your council has the numbers, the organization, and the communication ability to get involved and spread the word throughout the Christian community.

Strive to sponsor activities which enable the individual Knight to set a constant and worthy example as an ideal Catholic to his family, his community and his fellow members. Suggested Programs:

Our Lady of Guadalupe Prayer Program Keep Christ in Christmas Support for the Vatican

For these leadership roles, many more ideas and guidance is available at: http://www.kofc.org/en/service/index.html

Knight of the Month

We have a Knight in our council who is a member of so many organizations, it is amazing he is able to make time to help our council, yet he manages to contribute. This man was born in Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois. He is married to his lovely wife Brenda, who is an

educator at Lewisville I.S.D. They have been married for twenty six years and have two kids, Marissa is twenty five and Jared is twenty two. They moved to Texas in 2002 and have been members of St. Philip since.

Our honored Knight runs a swimming pool business that he established in 2004; he is also a Texas Licensed Auctioneer. For our parish he serves as Altar Minister, Usher, Eucharistic Minister and Facilitator for the Thursday morning Small Community of Faith, in addition to attending the Monday morning SCoF. He is a Fourth Degree Knight and has been a Knight for 18 years, now a Knights Trustee, and a member of the Knights Home Association board of directors. Also, he is a member of the St. Philip ACTS Core Team. He is also the President of his neighborhood’s HOA

He loves cars and is currently rebuilding a 1972 Corvette and is a member of the Corvette Legends Car Club.

Finally, he recently committed even more of his time to Council 9884 by accepting the position of Chairman for a new Fundraising Committee. I have heard some of his ideas and believe this council will raise some much needed funds with his leadership on this committee.

Please congratulate SK Dan Jacobs for being recognized as the January, 2013 Knight of the Month.

SK Eddie Martinez, Deputy Grand Knight

Also eligible for no more than two of the five scholarships are Catholic seniors who attend any other Catholic high school if their father is a member of Council 9884, or a parishioner of either St. Philip the Apostle or Our Lady of Lebanon churches.

A Very Merry Christmas Casino at the Millay’s

How nice it was to be part of a Merry Christmas casino in Donna and Barry Millay’s big, beautiful and very decorated home on Saturday 12/22/12 from 7:30 to 11:30 pm. This is one to remember because of the great food, beverages and warm guests; I think this will be one talked about for years to come.

Two craps tables in the garage with the doors open, due to the perfect weather, had a fun crowd. Four black Jacks were also set up in the well kept and clean garage. Vince ran Roulette in the dining room; two BJ’s were in the upstairs game room with its own tree, decorations and bar. Tony and Le Roy dealt for those players. Again without too much repetition, Donna had her home decorated to the hilt with three Christmas trees, lights garland inside and more lights than I’ve ever seen on the outside of a house and a beautiful reindeer, extremely nice.

Donna and Barry invited the dealer’s wives to partake these festivities and their hospitality. Those who did so were Mike McArdle’s Wife and daughter Cathy and Shelia. Steve’s wife and friend from England Ann and Kevin were also guests.

Dave Garner dealing Blackjack Missing four dealers, two BJ tables were not set up, though we seemed to manage. Then two or maybe four rookie craps dealers helping / learning the game were Chuck and Pete dealing with Louis and Bill on the sticks. Managing with 14-delaers they were Dan Jacobs, Vince Zawlocki, Tony Perry, Mike McArdle, Grant Beagles, Pete Whelan, Le Roy Terrio,

Bill Miller, Dave Centilli, Dave Garner, Chuck Berneche, Steve Robillard, Paul Kelleher and Louis Hernandez

, Chuck Berneche cracks up Grant Beagles Tear down was difficult since the trailer was parked at the end of a long drive way and no lights inside the trailer, but thanks to Dave’s truck head lights the space had some light.

Your Council thanks all who could take part in this short notice event and three –days before Christmas, especially for the able body men who set up, took down and loaded the equipment trailer. BTW, thank you Brian Friesenhahn for coming over to assist with set up.

Servant Leadership

"Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave - just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many"

-Mt 20:26-28

Many years ago, a rider on horseback came upon a squad of soldiers who were trying to move a heavy piece of timber. A corporal stood by, giving lordly orders to "heave." But the piece of timber was a trifle too heavy for the squad.

"Why don't you help them?" asked the quiet man on the horse, addressing the important corporal.

"Me? Why, I'm a corporal sir!" Dismounting, the stranger carefully took his place with the soldiers.

Now, all together boys - heave!" he said. And the big piece of timber slid into place. The stranger mounted his horse and addressed the corporal.

"The next time you have a piece of timber for your men to handle,

corporal, send for the commander-in-chief."

The horseman was George Washington, the first American president.

Whenever someone mentions your name does the word "servant" come to their mind? Jesus modeled servant-hood to twelve young men and changed the world. If you want to see others become servants you must model it yourself. George Washington was a great example of a Christian leader who was a great soldier and servant to those he led. No wonder God used this great servant to establish a new nation.

Moses was also a great leader of men. The Bible says that Moses was the most humble man on earth. That is why God could use him to lead hundreds of thousands out of slavery into the Promised Land.

Pray that God makes you a great yet humble servant leader of others. reprinted from Today God Is First, daily workplace inspirational, by Os Hillman This article was submitted by one of our Council’s examples of Servant Leadership, Bob Dubek. Bob is retired from military leadership but one would not know it from Bob’s humble roles of serving others.

First Degree Goes First Class

Our Council’s canvas pictures of Fr. McGivney and Christopher Columbus have been given a wonderful new home. Each picture has been carefully custom fit with a protective wood frame, with tight mitered corners to keep the paintings from further wear and tear. A custom carrying case has been crafted to ensure that these paintings will have both a safe way to travel and place to rest while not in use. The case is lightweight, yet strong and carefully lined with felt cloth to cradle the pictures as they nest, back to back. The tolerance of the case is so close to ensure that there is little room for the pictures to wiggle around, and get damaged. Our Council can expect to get many more productive years from the portraits of these two great men as they inspire candidates who enter our ranks. PoC: SK Lawrence Jermyn

These are brand new wheelchairs in five sizes that would normally cost $500 in a medical supply store, but because we are able to purchase containers containing 100 to 280 wheelchairs we are able to purchase them at $150 each. Council 9884 has participated in the purchase of three wheelchairs over the years mainly from the proceeds from our pancake breakfasts. In addition to the Council, individuals have purchased wheelchairs. This year so far, six wheelchairs have been purchased and credited to Council 9884.

For many of the recipients, this wheelchair is the first opportunity in their life to be mobile. There are videos of people who are only able to “scoot” along the street or crawl from place to place receiving their own personal wheelchair. Their expressions are priceless.

The family of SK Tommy Meyer has purchased a wheel chair this year. This is the third year for the SK Boyd Burris family to participate. In the Burris family, each adult family member contributes $15 toward a wheelchair instead of a Christmas gift for each other, and Patricia Burris’ family in Gainesville does the same thing. You are not able to designate the recipient for a single $150 contribution, but you can for a container purchase of $16,500. SK Boyd Burris has participated in the delivery and presentation of 10 wheelchairs to the VA hospital in Dallas and 10 wheelchairs to the VA hospital in Fort Worth.

The Knights of Columbus always sponsor worthy programs, but this Wheelchair Mission is

perhaps the best yet. Their motto is “Changing lives through mobility.” Get the family, the neighborhood or the office to participate. SK Boyd Burris has the donation forms. You can dedicate your donation to friends or family members. See the results of the Tommy Meyer Family donation in a picture following this story. SK Tommy Meyer and JoAn Meyer received this response from the American Wheelchair Mission informing them of the distribution of their donation. We do not know the name of the young man. All we know is that he now has the mobility he never had before. His smile tells the rest of the story and that’s all the Meyers need to know.

Tommy Meyer preps meat for the burritos while George Driscoll, a chef, “chews the fat” waiting for it.

Chef Ron Aljoe wonders “Where’s George?”

Steve Robillard observing the action thinking “It’s grand to be Grand Poobah”

“LJ, what are you doing with those plates?” “Wait and you’ll see.”

Left, Danny Apodaca readies eggs for the burritos.

“You call these eggs ready?”

“I dare you to pull one out from the bottom” Richard Rogers is amazed to see Steve actually working!
