– REAGAN LIBRARY COLLECTIONS

Material noted in bold within this collection is currently available for research use. If a folder is

available for research use it may still have withdrawn material due to Freedom of Information

Act restrictions. Most frequent withdrawn material is national security classified material,

personal privacy, protection of the President, etc. Any non-bolded folder is closed for research.

The non-bolded folders are subject to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests under the

provisions of the Presidential Records Act (PRA).

If you are interested in submitting a FOIA request for access to any of the unavailable records or

have any questions about these collections or series, please contact our archival staff at 1-800-

COUNCIL OF ECONOMIC ADVISERS: Staff Economists: Files, 1981-1989

The three member Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) was established by the Employment

Act of 1946. The CEA’s Sole function is to “advise and assist the President.” The CEA is also

charged with preparing the annual Economic Report of the President. Over time, the CEA has

become the chief economic forecasting unit for the Administration.

The Council maintains a professional staff of economists to assist in fulfilling these functions for

the President and the Administration. At the start of the Reagan Administration the staff

consisted of ten senior economists, 2 mid-level economists and 5 junior economists.

These Economists are usually academic economists hired on leaves of absence from universities

or other institutions for one-year terms. Because they are academics, their year generally runs

from summer to summer. The mid-level and junior economists generally do not have their Ph.D.

completed. Each one is assigned a specific area of expertise.

The Library has arranged this collection into 103 series. Each series consists of the material for

each identified staff economist. The series are in alphabetical order by the last name of the staff

economist. Some series have subseries which will usually include a chronological and subject

file. The series are as follows:
