The successful candidate must meet one of the following criteria: 1. Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling from an accredited college or university, OR 2. (NOTE: A Bachelor’s degree in one of the above listed degrees and a valid California license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline, pursuant to title 5, section 53410.1.) 3. Valid California Community College Instructor credential, appropriate to the subject, per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990). 4. A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of items 1 or 2 above (Applicants applying on the basis of equivalency must complete all Equivalency questions on their application in addition to all other required materials).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to those candidates demonstrating a high level of professional expertise on the basis of: • Evidence of knowledge and experience in counseling international, F-1 visa students in an academic setting (community college or university). • Knowledge of immigration laws affecting the international student community, particularly students in F-1 status. • Familiarity with standard academic policies as they apply to international, F-1 visa students. • Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with a broad range of personnel and departments with whom the position routinely interfaces, including faculty, staff, administration, as well as students’ families, sponsors, embassies, and government agencies. • Strong commitment to professional growth and development and to the continued innovation and improvement of successful counseling and teaching. • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with on-campus groups (including students, faculty, administrators and staff), as well as off campus community and education partners. • Interpret and explain complex federal regulations as they apply to F-1 student visa holders and other immigration categories. • Experience with evaluation of credit earned from international universities/colleges. • Demonstrated knowledge of state-mandated matriculation policies, procedures, and regulations. • Experience in the use of computer technology as a teaching tool, a student tracking system, a communication network for counseling, and articulation activities. • Experience in crisis intervention, stress management, anger management, anxiety, and/or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). • Knowledge of various community resources and support groups for international students. • Familiarity with current awards and scholarships for international students. • Experience as an advocate for international students. • Utilize computer technology as a tool in delivering counseling/advisement services. • Bilingual and bicultural.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES

Work closely with International Student Program staff, Counseling Center, Enrollment Services, and other college departments across campus to coordinate counseling and academic services for international, F-1 visa students. Develop specialized workshops and counseling interventions specific to the needs of international, F-1 visa students. Provide guidance for prospective F-1, international students on academic and university transfer issues. Remain current and informed on laws, regulations, policies and procedures related to the eligibility, enrollment, and government requirements related to international, F-1 visa students. Counsel students on probation and disqualification and make referrals to appropriate support services. Keep abreast of, and provide support for, the unique academic requirements and limitations of government sponsored F-1, international students. Attend department (Counseling and International Student Program), committee, and division meetings; serve on college committees. Assist in the preparation of counseling-related publications for F-1 students. Provide individual and group counseling for international students with academic, career, and personal concerns. Conduct student orientation and advisement sessions to help students in developing their individual educational plan. Assist students in defining personal and educational plans and goals. Create an environment for students that develops self-awareness and self-direction capabilities. Be proficient and maintain competency in the use of computer applications used in counseling, teaching, and articulation related activities. May teach counseling courses and conduct counseling-related workshops. Participate in general faculty functions related to the educational process, in-service programs, and professional development, SLO’s, program review, and other duties as assigned.

• Minimum of one (1) year of full-time (or part-time equivalent) recent community college counseling experience. • Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. • Knowledge of articulation agreements, academic policies, requirements, and procedures that impact community college students.

• Experience teaching courses in academic, career, and vocational planning, study skills, and human and helping relationships. • Teaching experience in post-secondary education. • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member within a collegial setting. • Experience in community college or higher education teaching and counseling, including personal, career, and academic issues with a diverse student population.

• Experience in counseling students on F-1 student visas. • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the cultural contexts of international students to provide effective guidance and informati on to those unfamiliar with the US culture and educational systems.
