Things to establish before you go to school

• What are you doing?• With whom?• When?• For how long?• You are NOT there to teach their children

alone - classroom/behaviour management still the responsibility of the teacher

• Can you take pictures?

Things to check in advance• Is powerpoint available?• What will school provide?• Classroom / hall unlikely to have black-out facilities; use

really clear images• How many pupils will you be working with or talking to?

SEN?• Tell school what you need them to provide? – best to

take your own. Ask but don’t rely!!• Plugs / water / sinks ???• Would a pre-visit help you? Can this be arranged?• Share your ppt with link teacher

• Consider your language• Watch out for suggestive comments• Be aware of personal space• Avoid physical contact• Don’t single people out• Watch out for causing embarrassment• Try not to be left on your own with pupils

• Allow plenty of time – Norwich ring road!• The school run• Parking at school !• The front door(s)! • Getting stuff to/from the car – helpers?• Signing-in / out / wearing a visitors badge

What can you offer to do?

• Hands-on - very popular• All children like WOW factor things –

explosions / noises / colour• If giving school assembly, think of

concentration spans of 4 – 11 year olds!• Images

The questions you might be asked

• How much do you earn?• What have you discovered?• Why do you do science?

Be a good KISSAR – keep it short, simple and real

Don’t forget to mention the travel aspect, include pictures

DO NOT TAKE…

• ‘dirty’ objects / kit / labcoats• Hazardous chemicals – ethidium bromide

contaminated pipettes!• Hazardous organisms – plant/microbe• Anything genetically modified• PAT testing

• Ask questions, such that you can gauge the knowledge base of your audience and adapt your talk accordingly

• Decide on the message of your talk….what are you trying to achieve

• Pitch to the right level

• Speak slowly

• Simplify your talk - Don’t overwhelm them with too much information

• Take time to explain terminology……eg leukocyte = white blood cell
