experiences for mature adults. We look forward to seeing you in class!

Audubon Society: The Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania (ASWP) had so much fun

here in years past; they are back this year with many new topics and a couple of topics that

you requested. Ryan Stauffer is an amazing naturalist for the ASWP with a

passion to share his knowledge. Each class will have a presentation along with time to

socialize and discuss the topic. Each of the three Havens can participate within their own

Haven, however if you have a scheduling conflict, you are welcome to attend the class in

another Haven. Ryan promises that you will learn something in every single class. You can

register for individual classes or the whole series.

Birds of Prey: These hunting birds have incredible adaptations that allow them to capture

their prey. Ryan will go over the natural history of our native raptors and

introduce you to a live bird; bring your camera for a birdy photo-op!

Tree Diseases and Pests in Pennsylvania: Our trees are under attack! Come and learn

about the who, what, where, and why of these tree threats and what you can do about it.

Some of these problems are natural, but the majority have come about through human

ignorance; arm yourself with knowledge!

Wednesday 2/6/19

Hummingbirds at Home: These awesome birds have evolved with flowering plants and are

unique in the avian world. Ryan will go over the different hummingbird species of the USA as

well as how they are reacting to climate change.

Trees and Shrubs of Pennsylvania: Our state is home to many northern and southern

species. Come and learn how to tell the difference between our native shrubs and trees as

well as how they fit into our ecosystem.

Marcellus Shale Drilling in Pennsylvania: Natural gas is the end product of petroleum

maturation and we have an ocean of it under our feet. Ryan will discuss the development of

hydrocarbons and the technology to get them out of the ground.

William Penn and the Settling of Pennsylvania: Our state began as a colony by charter.

William Penn had high hopes for his holy experiment and for a time, it really was his

“peaceable kingdom.” Come and learn about this fascinating historical

character.

Wilderness Survival: Every year people die in outdoor settings. These victims made the

wrong choices. Ryan will cover some common scenarios and offer tips to help you get out

alive. This class will also cover the psychology of survival and prove that

the best piece of survival gear is a clear mind.

Pennsylvania Wetlands: What is the difference between a fen and a bog, or a swamp and a

marsh? In this class we will explore our state’s wonderful waterways and learn about their

vital function in our ecosystem.

Wednesday 5/15/19

Succop Nature Park Tour: This fieldtrip to Succop Nature Park will include a tour of the

mansion, a wildlife hike on level trails, and a tour of the newly renovated

barn. Please dress for the weather. Bring your walker, if necessary. We will

enjoy lunch at the Hardwood Café at noon.

Tour de Cabot: Let’s take a tour of your own backyard! We will load onto the golf carts and

Ryan will identify trees, birds, vascular plants and other natural aspects of the

grounds. Please dress for the weather. We will gather at your respective patio

area.

Cooking with Georgia: Whether you love to cook, want

to learn, or just enjoy eating with the fellowship of friends, these

cooking demonstrations are for you! Georgia is a self taught cook

with a passion for easy yet delicious recipes. Spending time in Georgia’s classes is very

enjoyable and her energy and positive attitude are contagious. You can pick just one class or

all six. Class size is limited and these classes are very popular, get your registration in

promptly. The supplies are all included in your fee, and we get to sample what we make……

nothing better than that! Ingredients and supplies are pre-purchased therefore, last minute

cancellations and no-shows will be charged the full class fee.

Cost for each date is $8.00 for Concordia residents, and $10.00 for community

WQED Chris Fennimore 25 Year Anniversary: What would Saturday morning be without a

hot cup of coffee and Chris Fennimore on WQED with all of his fabulous guests and their

delicious recipes. We will discuss how Chris Fennimore’s journey began with WQED. From

church ladies to renowned chefs – cookbooks are about traditions of passing recipes to the

next generation.

Top Secret Restaurant Recipes: Often restaurant recipes are made with common

ingredients everyone can find in their pantry. We will whip up some delicious recipes – just

like you would order and enjoy at your favorite restaurant – but in the comfort of your

home – no tip required!!

Healthy Cooking for Two: Smaller portions are the focus of this cooking class. Delicious

recipes utilizing fresh ingredients that are tailored for your two-person household (or cook

once and eat twice).

“P” is for Potato: You say “potato” – I say “potato” – either way the potato is a healthy

vegetable. Let’s make some delicious, nutritious potato dishes using a wide variety of this

wonderful vegetable – from side dishes to desserts (yep you heard me right) desserts!!

Bed and Breakfast Favorites: In my travels, very kind innkeepers have shared their popu-

lar recipes with me. I will share those favorite recipes with you from comfort breakfast

foods to snacks and drinks.

Book Review – Lydia Bastianich “Celebrate Like An Italian”: From refugee to celebrity chef

Lydia brings the authentic and warm hospitality of Italy to our homes. While discussing her

successful life journey we will cook up some of her Italian specialties.

The Titanic- Then and Now: We will explore the building of the ship, what it was like

sailing on the ship and a its variety of passengers, the

sinking of the Titanic, and the finding of the ship in 1985.

We’ll look at the lives of some of the passengers and

crew who were on the Titanic on its maiden voyage and

the effects of that voyage on their lives. Dr. Robert Ballard and his discovery of the sunken

ship will also be discussed as well as today’s continuing interest in the Titanic. Plus, don’t

forget to ask me about the stewardess who was on the Titanic when it sank---as well as on

the Britannic and Olympic when they collided and were damaged. There are so many

stories concerning all aspects of the Titanic and we will explore many of them.

Schemes, Scams and Fraud: From sweepstakes and lottery scams to identity theft and

investment fraud, the con artists always manage to stay just a step ahead of us. We have to

be careful when we receive an invitation for a free meal at a local restaurant from someone

wanting to help us invest or manage our hard-earned money. Telemarketing calls invade our

privacy daily. We can no longer trust what we hear from someone trying to get his hand into

our wallet or bank account. Consumers must be pro-active in protecting our money by

being aware and informed about current scams and frauds. This educational and engaging

presentation is filled with tips and practical information. Our instructor, Mary Bach, is a long

-time, nationally recognized, independent Consumer Advocate. As a volunteer, she is also

Chair of the AARP Pennsylvania Consumer Issues Task Force. She appears

monthly on FOX43 in York, Pennsylvania, as a volunteer, providing the Scam Watch

segments, and she is also a frequent guest on “Focus on Aging Adults” on PCN TV.

Are You Getting What You Pay For?: Do you ever feel “ripped off” in the mar-

ketplace? Do you understand Pennsylvania’s amusing and confusing sales tax applications?

When you pump a gallon of gas, how do you know that that is what you received? Have you

noticed that manufacturers are shrinking the amount of packaged product we get for the

price we pay? When selecting merchandise, do you have to hunt for the price? Have you

ever been overcharged at a scanner checkout register? Your shopping trips will never be the

same after this entertaining and educational presentation packed with important consumer

information! Our instructor, Mary Bach, is a long-time, nationally recognized, independent

Consumer Advocate. As a volunteer, she is also Chair of the AARP Pennsylvania Consumer

Issues Task Force.

Food Safety: Are you schooled in preventing food-borne illnesses in your home? Each year

1 in 6 Americans get sick from eating contaminated food. Tandi Stivason will

teach us about what we can do to protect ourselves. Know the rules to handling,

preparation, and storage of food in ways that prevent food-borne illness, proper

handling of your leftovers, safe cooling and reheating of food, and when to

throw it out. Please register for any one of the dates below.

Our English Heritage Series:

The American Revolution may have ended our political connections to Great Britain,

but our fascination with all things British is never ending. In this series,

we look at some of the most interesting and important eras in English

history. Please register for each class individually.

School District

Cost: All of Steve’s classes are FREE to residents and community

Knights and Heraldry: Knights in shining armor, King Arthur and the Round Table, The

Crusades, and Robin Hood. These are some of the topics we will explore in this

session on the myths and reality of early English history. In addition, we will

look at the origin of family crests and their designs.

monarchs prior to the current queen, it is almost certain that Henry VIII and

The Victorian Era

Until recently, Queen Victoria was the longest reigning monarch in

English history. Along with her husband Albert, they ruled an empire

over which “The Sun Never Sets”. During this time, Great Britain

became the dominant industrial and military power in the world.

The most famous entertainer of the 20th century, Walt Disney is a name recognized around

the world. Who was this man and how did he create so many iconic images and stories?

From the humble beginnings of Steamboat Willie, Walt created a global media empire now

known simply as “Disney”.

This series examines some of the everyday aspects of life in Pennsylvania that are often taken

for granted. Some are gone, but many remain with us today. Please register

for each class individually.

did so many, such as Alameda Park, Luna Park, and West View disappear?

have fascinating stories.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles: The history of modern transportation is a story with many

ties to Pennsylvania. Conestoga wagons, interstate highways,

Lindbergh and Earhart, world famous canals, bridges, and railroads.

All of these have connections here in our backyard.

Fred Rodgers and Other Famous Neighbors: Many famous people from all walks of life

grew up or became famous here in Western Pennsylvania. Mancini, Stewart,

tell these and other stories of our world famous neighbors past and

present.

Tour/Field Trip: We will board the bus and travel to Uncle Billy’s Grave Site

and tour around the Saxonburg area as Steve points out historic landmarks

before stopping at Saxonburg Museum for about a 90 minute visit. We will

then travel to the Field House for lunch.

Disaster Preparedness: What papers would you grab in an emergency? Are

you prepared? While it’s important to grab certain documents that are difficult

to replace, you don’t want anything to delay your evacuation and ability to get

to safety. So it’s crucial that you have a plan, because when it comes time

for an evacuation, there may not be much time to prepare.

Concordia’s legal department will talk about emergency preparation from a

legal viewpoint so you’ll know how be ready if there ever was a need to leave

your home.

Seniors for Safe Driving: Concordia hosts a PennDot approved, refresher

course, offered by AAA, several times a year. If you would like to take this

course, please call AAA at 1-800-559-4880 to register or visit www.sfsd-pa.com. This course

is held at Haven 2 (entrance 5) from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm in the 2nd floor Class Room. This is

not a series, you only need to take one course for your refresher. Payment for the class is

made directly to SFSD.

Apple iPad Classes: Whether you are a beginner or a step above a beginner, there is always

more to learn. Julie Tulba will guide us through the crazy and fascinating

world of our iPads. If you don’t have your own Apple iPad but would like to

learn, please note this on your registration form, and we will reserve one for

you to borrow. This class does not apply to other tablet brands. The first

class in each week will cover new topics; the class that follows in the same

week will be review. Repetition is the key to remembering what we have

learned. Class size is limited, so please sign up early to guarantee your spot.

Healthy Balance: Falls are the leading cause of injuries in people over 65. Sadly, they often

lead to loss of independence and the need for a higher level of care. During our discussion,

we will touch upon risk factors for falls, demonstrate some clinical testing tools that

physicians use to estimate fall risk, and discuss interventions that may lower your risk of

falling.

Yoga for Active Seniors: In each hour-long class, we will practice fundamental yoga poses

and mindful breathing techniques to gain strength, flexibility, balance and relaxation.

Participants should feel comfortable in their ability to get up and down from the floor (a chair

will be available to hold on to as we get up and down). Helpful items to bring: a yoga mat,

light weight blanket, a cushion to sit on, and fresh water. Plan to wear comfortable, stretchy

clothes. Shoes are not needed, but may be worn, if preferred.

Tai Chi and Qigong: You can experience the rewards of these ancient meditative

exercises combined in our new series. Qigong is a system of gentle body posture and slow

flowing movement, breathing, and meditation used for the purposes of health,

(pronounced chee-gung). Tai Chi is also a healing art that originated in China

more than two thousand years ago. It is a series of continuous,

specialized breathing techniques to relax the body and mind. This program is

appropriate for any fitness level and can also be modified to be done seated.

Instructor: Dr. Ted Cibik, educator at Inner Strength in Leechburg for 21 years. Cibik is

from a long linage of Chinese Physicians (89th generation) including training in Tai chi chuan

and Qigong. He has been practicing martial arts and meditation since he was a child.

Assistive Devices: Walkers, Rollators and Canes, OH MY! Is this the right fit for you? Come

and have your gait analyzed with your assistive device. Receive instruction on using your

device effectively and safely. Have your assistive device adjusted for proper fit

and make sure it is working correctly. Tony will fix whatever he can on your

assistive device. The more comfortable someone is with their device, the less the

likelihood they will experience a fall or injury. Help reduce your fall risk and

therefore stay independent longer.

Navy Search and Rescue Presentation: Haven 3 resident, Al Hammer served onboard a

guided missile frigate with a rescue helicopter on deck as part of Navy search & rescue

operations to find and save many downed pilots & crews. He will focus on several heroic and

courageous rescues that occurred during the 14 months he was on station in the Gulf of

Tonkin. Al was on the bridge and near the Combat Information Center where these events

unfolded. The presentation will be similar to the one Al gave to the Haven 3 Men’s Discussion

Group in June 2018.

Thread Art: Join us for a fun and easy craft that just about anybody can do!

Haven 3 residents, Audrey and Mary Nell will guide us in making thread art that you can

frame or make into a greeting card. We’ll have a few patterns for you to choose from and all

the supplies you’ll need (needles, thread, and card stock) to hand make your masterpiece.

You just may find a hobby in your new found card stitching skills!

Glass Painting: In this class, a wine glass isn't just a vessel for sipping—it's a canvas for

exploring creativity. During these two sessions, you’ll learn techniques for brushing images on

long-stem glassware. All painting supplies and a set of 2 wine glasses are included. We’ll

show you step by step how to create beach themed wine glasses, so no experience is needed.

Veterans Benefits: Do you know if you are taking advantage of all the benefits that you

Prescription Drugs: There are so many different kinds of medications out there, and just

when we think we know them all, new ones are created. This class will

describe the most common and most severe food/drug interactions. We will focus

on high risk medications and the drugs where even a small increase in activity

could cause serious side effects. We will also discuss the most common foods and drinks

that can have an effect on how the medications work.

REAL ID: A federal law was passed that affects how states are to issue licenses for drivers

and ID cards if they are going to be acceptable for federal purposes. Do you have to get a

REAL ID? When is it needed? What documents are required to obtain a REAL ID? All

these questions and more will be answered by Ron Beatty of the PA Department of

Transportation. He will explain everything we want to know about the new REAL ID that

will be available in the spring.

Join Us For SilverSneakers!

Concordia Lutheran Ministries in Cabot, PA offers the SilverSneakers fitness program for our

residents and the community! See below the various classes offered in our Haven 1 (entrance

2A) and Haven 3 (entrance 6) buildings. All SilverSneakers classes are free to our Concordia

Haven residents. Non-residents can participate in classes at no cost if you have a SliverSneakers

card (offered through your insurance), or for $2.00 per class without a card. Contact your

insurance company to inquire about receiving a SilverSneakers access card.

SilverSneakers Classic

(Beginner - Great for mobility)

Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase

muscular strength, range of motion, and activities for daily living skills. Hand-held weights,

elastic tubing with handles, and an exercise ball are offered for resistance. A chair will be

used for seated and/or standing support.

SilverSneakers Yoga

(Beginner - Reduce your levels of stress)

Yoga Stretch will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing

yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to

improve flexibility, balance, and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and a

final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.
