The ACCESS programme,accredited by the Open CollegeNetwork (OCN), has 3 mainroutes:

ACCESS to Health Care

Human Biology, Psychology,Social Issues, Study Skills,Professional Practices

This option is ideal for thosewishing to go to University andprogress a career in the Healthprofessions eg Nursing, Midwifery,Radiography, Phoysiotherapyand Speech Therapy.

Study Skills is also an essentialpart of the course.

If you are planning to go toUniversity to follow a career inRadiography or Physiotherapy, itis wise to also take the ScienceGCSE equivalent course.

ACCESS to Higher Education & ACCESS to Teaching

Psychology, Social Issues, Study Skills, English

This route leads to a range ofdegree courses in a variety ofsubjects eg Teaching,Criminology, Media and English.If you are interested in a degreerelated to teaching then youwill need to ensure you haveGCSE or equivalent in English,Mathematics and Science.

ACCESS to Social Sciences

Choose 2 subjects from HumanBiology, English Literature,Psychology, Social Issues plusStudy Skills

This route looks at Psychologyand Social Issues in particular,with a view to a University degreecourse in an appropriate subjectarea and a range of careeroptions including Social Work,Welfare, Youth and Communitywork, Psychology andManagement.

The College is well known forits innovative projects andability to provide a range ofunique hands-on opportunitiesfor its students. For exampletutor Carol Dawson helpedselect the winning design forthis year’s Anthony Nolan TrustGarden at the Tatton FlowerShow and students on the RHSCertificate in Horticulture willbe helping create the winningdesign at the Show in July.

Gardening Certificate

This professional qualificationis for those interested indesign and construction andgrowing organic produce whileencouraging wild life in thegarden. Subjects includeorganic gardening, growingvegetables and salads, wildlife gardening, garden design,propagation, the flower borderand lawns and construction.

Gardening Skills

(City and Guilds, 1 or 2 years)Cheadle: Wed 9.30am-3.30pmMarple: Thurs 9.30am-3.30pm

This enjoyable full dayqualification combines the Cityand Guilds Gardening Certificatewith a Gardening SkillsCertificate and is ideal for thebeginner. Working indoors andoutdoors you will put theory intopractice with subjects includinggrowing fruit, vegetables andsalads, lawns, beds and borders,planting, pruning, propagation,pest and diseases, applyingfoods and soils and cultivation.

It is possible to take both ofthese City and Guild courses injust one year. Both will increaseyour practical knowledge,improve your growing anddesign skills and give you everyopportunity to improve your jobprospects in the industry or goon to further qualifications.

General interest courses are also on offer:

The Kitchen Garden (10 weeks, Thurs, 7.00-9.00pm) Cheadle onlyYou will look at how to design and plan a productive, yet attractivekitchen garden.

Plants for Places (10 weeks, Mon, 1.30-3.30pm) Cheadle onlyThis must do course for real plant enthusiasts looks at how to identifyand select the right plant for the right place. Subjects include the boggarden, the dry garden and the Winter garden.

Garden Design (20 weeks, Tues, 12.30-3.00pm) (Cheadle only, starts September)Learn about plants, soils, building structures and how to arrangeplants in your borders. By the end of the course students will havedrawn a plan for their own garden.

Students also have the opportunity to take the City and Guilds GardenDesign Certificate. Please contact Admissions for details of otherGardening and Horticulture courses available throughout the year.

portfolios to demonstratetheir competence in planning,organisational procedures,using IT, communication andhealth & safety. The quality oftheir portfolios was highlycommended by the AwardingBody’s External Verifier, aswas their 100% retention andachievement.

Work Based Learning & NVQs

Our occupational learningprogrammes are designed togive accreditation for hands-onpractical skills developed in theworkplace, or to help a returnerto work to gain a qualificationthat confirms competence.Most awards offered are National VocationalQualifications (NVQs) or relate to the NVQ vocationalframework.

Occupational Development Courses

The Occupational DevelopmentTeam deliver a range ofqualifications which are aparticularly attractiveenhancement to those inemployment and those whowish to develop theiremployment opportunities or complement a main NVQtraining programme.

We offer a range of qualificationsparticularly linked to our COVE(Centre of Vocational Excellence)in Elderly Care. The courses lastup to 16 weeks and can beachieved within the workplaceat a flexible pace suitable tothe learner.

The Care Cadet Programme

This initiative is aimed at youngpeople aged 17 or 18 who wouldlike a career in Adult Care.

Combining time in College andthe workplace students havethe opportunity to achieve carerelated qualifications such asFirst Aid, Moving & Handlingand Food Hygiene prior tocompleting the NVQ componentof the Apprenticeship.

Information &Communications Technology Our ICT courses run during the day and in the evenings at both our Cheadle & Marple campuses.

Introduction to Computing

(30 weeks, 3 hours)A gentle introduction to using thecomputer and using the Internetand email. Ideal for students withno experience of using acomputer and for those whoneed additional tuition to preparethem for the ECDL course.

European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)

ECDL is the internationallyrecognised qualification whichenables people to demonstratetheir competence in computerskills and is the fastest growing ITuser qualification in over 125countries. The syllabus is dividedinto Part 1 (Level 1) and Part 2(Level 2).

Part 1 (20 weeks, 3 hours) Consists of 3 modules designed togive an overview of computer use:Basic Concepts of IT, Using aComputer and Managing Files andInformation and Communication(Internet and email)

Part 2 (30 weeks, 3 hours) Covers the use of the mainsoftware programs used at homeand in the office: Word Processing,Spreadsheets, Databases,Presentations, Using IT.When Parts 1 and 2 have beensuccessfully completed the fullECDL certificate is awarded.

ECDL Individual Module Accreditation

(7 weeks, 3 hours)For those people who want toconcentrate their studies onspecific applications it is nowpossible to study individualmodules of the ECDL awardand receive the accreditation. You can study any one ormore of the followingmodules: Basic Concepts of IT,Using a Computer andManaging Files, WordProcessing, Spreadsheets,Databases, Presentations,Information andCommunication (Internet andemail).

ECDL Advanced

(20 weeks, 3 hours)The ECDL Advancedqualification is designed toprogress students from ECDLto the next level ofcompetence. Your proficiencywill be tested at a muchhigher level on specificapplications and you will beawarded a certificate forsuccessfully passing a test foreach module. ECDL Advancedis available in four modules:Word Processing,Spreadsheets, Presentationand Databases.

Introduction toPhotoshop

Adobe Photoshop is theprofessional standard indesktop digital imaging.Modify photographs or createoriginal images using a fullassortment of painting,drawing and retouching tools.In this 10 week course you willlearn the basics of thispowerful graphics tool.

Introduction to the Internet

(10 weeks, 3 hours)This practical course will giveyou experience of some of themost useful aspects of theInternet - how to browse, search,send emails, onlineshopping,setting up your own web log(Blog) and many other activities.

Using Microsoft Office

(10 weeks, 3 hours)Aimed at users with someexperience these workshopsallow you to choosewhich programs you want tostudy - choose form Word,Excel, Access and PowerPoint.You can use these workshopsas a refresher or as a steppingstone to the ECDL course.
