Standing at attention withtheir tall hats and toothy grins, nutcrackers are a festive seasonalsight, but do you know the storybehind the ornamental soldiers?

In the 1700s, woodworkersin Germany began carvingnutcrackers in the shapes ofsoldiers and kings. Symbols ofgood luck and protection, thedolls were traditionally given asgifts. Pressing a handle on theback of the figurine enabled itsmouth to move up and down tocrack open a nut. Bright colorsand handcrafted parts added tothe charm of the creations.

The march of nutcrackers intothe U.S. was spurred by twofactors. During World War II,many American soldiers stationedin Germany bought nutcrackers assouvenirs for their loved ones.Around the same time, PeterTchaikovsky’s ballet “TheNutcracker” debuted in the U.S.and became a hit, making thecharacter a beloved icon.

As pre-shelled nuts becamemore common, nutcrackers wereused mainly for decoration. Whiletraditional soldiers remain apopular design, whimsical figuresof all kinds can now be found.

Special SnowflakesYou’ve probably heard

that no two snowflakesare the same. But how dowe know this for sure?Scientists say it’s a matterof probability: A fullyformed snowflake hasabout a quintillionmolecules (a quintillionis the number 1 followedby 18 zeroes). The chanceof these moleculesarranging themselves inthe exact same way morethan once is incrediblyslim, especially whenaffected by constantlychanging factors liketemperature andhumidity.
