Sweets to the SweetThe tradition of gifting chocolate candy in
heart-shaped boxes can be traced back to Victoriantimes. Richard Cadbury, of England’s famous family ofchocolate makers, began packaging their sweets indecorated boxes shaped like a heart, which Cadburyhimself designed. The artful containers were oftensaved to hold keepsakes. Today, 36 millionheart-shaped boxes of candy are sold each year forValentine’s Day.
In the CardsThe earliest surviving Valentine’s message, a poem,
dates from 1415. Victorian-era Valentines featured laceand embossed paper; at that time, it was consideredbad luck to sign a Valentine’s Day card. Today, morethan 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchangedeach year.
