On the Cover - Jim Fernandez/Peggy Watkins’s 1963 Blue Roadsterby Jim Fernandez
As I suspect is the case with everyone in the club, I’ve always loved Corvettes. Among all of them, the 1963-67 Sting Rays are by far my favorites; great power trains and independent rear suspension wrapped up in the most beautiful car design ever built (personal opinion). During my teenage years, my uncle drove to St. Louis to pick up a new red ‘63 roadster, and he was generous enough to allow me to drive it on several occasions. I told myself that some how, some day, I would have one of my own.
I work for Boeing as a manager in the Computing (IT) organization, and my wife Peggy Watkins is a realtor with Coldwell Banker Bain. After the completion of our house remodel on Mercer Island, I began to look locally and on the Internet for Sting Rays. In late 2002, I made the plunge, buying a 1963 Daytona Blue roadster. It was shipped across the country from Rhode Island and arrived on a cold November morning. I searched for Seattle Corvette clubs, and joined CMCS in February, 2003, shortly before my car’s 40th birthday.I am not a garage mechanic, and this is my first experience with owning an old car. The more I look, the more I learn how primitive (and worn) a 40-year machine can be. These cars are definitely worth preserving, but they do require a whole lot of time …and a whole lot of money. Rick Stark and his amazing top mechanic Tim Goree have performed many miracles with my car, from the engine and transmission re-builds to substantial interior restoration. We even had to patch the vinyl-covered fiberglass dash where a previous owner had cut huge holes for a sound system that was wedged in with a piece of 2x4!“Restoration is a Journey, not a Destination.” My ’63 will never be a Duntov Award winner, but it is evolving into a very nice driver, and it is the ultimate stress-reliever. Turning the ignition key wakes up 340 horses, and it never fails to put a smile on me and everyone who sees it go by. Several people have even followed me into my driveway and offered to buy the car.

Club Radios Many of our members have purchased UHF radio(s) that are used during
caravans to keep the group together and resolve issues and problems. Most of the radios are the Motorola brand, two of which are shown below.
Valley Corvettes
CLS11101 Watt
XU21002 Watt
One source of these radios is:www.TechWholesale.com
Both are a single channel, which is all that you need for Club operations. The 2 watt unit is more satisfactory, and does not cost that much more. The prices are not listed, as they change often. The Club uses Frequency 7 (467.9000 MHz)
and Interference Code 29 (179.9 Hz)You also can opt for more power, channels,
brands and models.NOTE: These are UHF frequencies, not VHF

Vintage Racing Motors is owned by several local businessmen and is the home to their vintage race cars. These cars are taken all over the country to participate in vintage racing, and if you attend the vintage racing scene locally, you might have seen some of the cars. The collection is constantly changing, but has included such cars as CanAm Lolas, a birdcage Maseratti, the late 1950's Pan American winner etc. This is a working shop where the cars are restored, maintained and prepared between races. If you enjoyed the Hart collection, you will also enjoy this tour. After the meeting those that are interested can head to downtown Redmond for lunch.Kevin Jewell (425) 885-0103 or [email protected].

We met for breakfast at the Old Country Buffet in Kirkland for our February general membership meeting. As the area was in the middle of a wind storm, some people were without power and had to come to the restaurant to get their coffee fix! We voted three new members into the club.
Membership now stands at 320.

Recently moving to Kirkland from Las Vegas are Ken and Jean Fiorentino, with their Torch Red 2001 coupe. They enjoy tennis and have an auto model collection, and are members of Vegas Vettes. They noted quite a difference in the weather between Vegas and Seattle!
Pat and Danny Rice joined last month but we did not have his photo. They have a 1978 white T-top. So here they are together. See the February Issue for details.
Kent Van Dusen joins us from Marysville. He’s the proud owner of 4 Corvettes, some of which we’ve seen at past CRISTA show and shines. He has a 1960, 2 1966’s (one in pieces), and a 2003 blue Z06. His hobbies are restoring, driving and showing classic Corvettes. Kent also belongs to NCRS and SACC.

Wet Weekend Kudosby Oran Petersen
Wet Weekend 2006 is now history. Over 60 members and 35 cars enjoyed the Port Hadlock weekend set up by Dennis & Lorrie Montgomery and assisted by Rob and Sheila Wyllie. Tim Cox also set up a diabolical trivia activity based on the movie “An Officer and a Gentleman.” Ferry ride, guided tour, museum, banquet, games, brunch, scenery, and more. This weekend had it all in a jam-packed two days. See some “filler” in this newsletter. More will follow next month due to the tight printing deadline. Thanks to you all!
This is a great opportunity to see why you bought a sports car in the first place.
Club membership is not a requirement to participate.

SEATTLE
EA RQM U
CORVETTE
CLUB
The introduction of the C6 ZO6 this model year has been impressive. Seeing Wes Holme’s Velocity Yellow ZO6 in person was both a thrill and exciting. It will be interesting to see what the General and Tom Wallace have in store for the future of Corvette. The future of Corvette Marque Club of Seattle is up to the new board that will be installed later this month and the support they receive from you, the membership. We have some new events, some returning events, and more things to do in the coming months than a normal person can handle. But then, we are Corvette people. The new board needs your support. Working together we can organize and carry out events that everyone will enjoy. We have parades, car shows, driving events, tours, a baseball game, and our big event: Seattle in September 2006. It’s a mixed salad of events that should touch every member in the club, all involve Corvettes, usually eating, and always the camaraderie that CMCS offers. If you have an idea that we haven’t scheduled let’s hear about it.Our big event this year will be Seattle in September IV 2006. This event will draw people from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia. Kevin and Judy Jewell are working with a great team of CMCS members to plan the activities. More volunteers are needed to help on the day of the event, so contact Kevin or Judy to let them know how you can help.Thank you all for your support this past year and for all the hard work you have given to this club.Rick

Really Awesome Driving Event #5by Kayla Main
Another big piece of the puzzle is now in place. Our 5th and final RAD tour will take us to the Oregon coast on June 24 & 25, 2006. The event will officially launch on Saturday morning from a motel near Olympia, WA. Soon after the launch we’ll drop off of I-5 onto the back-roads and we won’t see the freeway again until sometime on Sunday afternoon. We’ll head off in a generally southwesterly direction and meander over hill and dale, around more than a few bends on genuine official Corvette roads (and over some water!). This event is all about driving on some AWESOME roads. Eventually, we’ll end up in Seaside, OR at the
Shilo Seaside Oceanfront Inn. (30 North Prom, Seaside, OR 97138 for those with GPS) Call (800) 222-2244 or (503) 738-9571 for reservations. Mention Corvette Marque Club to get our special rate.
$119 per night. Upgrades are available for those who so choose.
What? You don’t relish the thought of getting up early on Saturday morning? Some don’t. Your tour leaders find themselves in this category so for those of a similar mind set we’ll find a motel near Olympia on Friday evening, have dinner somewhere, kick back, maybe play a little ‘31’ and get in the right frame of mind for the Saturday launch. As in all past RAD’s, you’re guaranteed to see stuff you’ve never seen before. This may just be the best RAD ever. Event registration details will be in the April newsletter. In the meantime, get your Seaside room reservation made now while the room block is available & plan for LOTS OF FUN. Keep watching this space for more previews…
