Why I chose this genre: I chose the genre on pesticides in our schools because starting off in this class I really enjoyed the argument that Rachel Carson wrote on pesticides and it made me more aware of this serious issue we have on our hands as time progresses. Then as I did more research on it I saw a good amount of articles on pesticides affecting peoples health, and I also wanted to be aware of this for my own health and the ones I care about. Then I thought I would narrow the case of health risks to students since I am also a student. This argument is important to my selected audience because I am focusing on the high school I went to and so did my older and younger brother. The PTA and the School Board of Pasco County is the most important audience for this topic since they are the ones that look out for the students and their education, as well as the PTA. The PTA is a group of volunteer parents that build strong working environments for the parents, teachers and students and they handle minor problems, questions, funding for the school. Claim: My claim is a claim of fact and it is that the amount of pesticides in our schools needs to be reduced to protect the health of the students and faculty. If not reduced they should be switched to organic pesticides or traps versus sprays that students and faculty could be allergic too.
