I’m sure many of you who use Social Media will be aware of George McGowan, a village residentwho gets up at the crack of dawn and goes for an early morning walk, taking pictures as he goes.

We chatted with George a couple of weeks ago to ask him if we could use some of his pictures inthis edition of The Bulletin. George, being George, went one better and suggested he do a ‘VillageWalk’ video . . . . so for those of you reading this edition from our new village website, just clickon the top picture, sit back and enjoy. If you’re reading this as a printed copy then we hope youenjoy the pictures below. A very limited number of printed copies of The Bulletin are availablefrom Spar and James Whites’ for those without internet access.

The In Bloom team has come to an abrupt halt duringthe lockdown brought on by the coronavirus crisisexcept for watering the most recently plantedcontainers and ground beds. The Royal HorticulturalSociety has cancelled all the In Bloom competitions for2020.

There is a lot of advice on  various websites about howto cope with self-isolation and lockdown. One way is tospend more time in the garden growing flowers andvegetables and looking at wildlife. Here is one websiteyou might like to take a look at. There are more though,so keep searching.

Dear friends,What different times we’re living in!As I write, Captain Tom Moore has raised over £20m for the NHS.Tom is a 99 year old Army veteran, recently treated for a broken hip and skin cancer. He decided to raisemoney “for the sake of the nurses and the NHS we have, because they’re doing such a magnificent job”by lapping his garden 100 times before his 100th birthday on 30th April. Capt Tom’s daughter, Hannah, called her father a “beacon of hope in dark times”.What are examples of our ‘beacons of hope’ in Hutton Cranswick?

The ‘Pod’ scheme where volunteers shop for those who can’t.

The Rainbows in windows.

The Spar Shop being ‘open all hours’!

James White the butcher being open.

Ray & Carolyn from the Garden Centre delivering our garden needs.

Food & drink deliveries from the Farm Shop.

The village Green with its beautifully kept pond and now the Cross with its glowing yellow flow-ers.

The lovely countryside available for our daily walks, runs, cycle rides and walking the dog. It’sgreat to pass the time of day with those we meet – keeping our distance, of course.

Going out on a Thursday evening for 8pm, to clap our NHS, working where ever they are needed.

Our other ‘key workers’ who work for the other ‘emergency services’, or at Southlands, or provid-ing care in people’s homes, or working in the shops supplying us with food and other basic needs,or driving the vans, lorries etc delivering, or those working for the council keeping other vitalservices going. So many people who deserve our gratitude!

Being able to keep in contact with one another via the telephone and social media.

Food parcels from the Government.

Not forgetting, of course, all our friends at chapel and church.

(Many apologies for those I’ve forgotten.)

But for some, this is a very frightening and sad time: worry about jobs, having enough money to buy food andpay the other bills, keeping safe, cancelled events, curtailed travel. As a Christian, I look to God for strength, forreassurance and for hope. In times of despair, I have some favourite verses.

Psalm 23, especially verses 1 & 4. “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. Even though I walk through thedarkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me.”

Psalm 46 verse 1. “God is my refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.”

Matthew chapter 8, verses 23-27. Jesus calms the storm on the lake. Even though the disciples knew Jesus wasin the boat with them, they were still afraid. We are the same. Jesus is in the boat with us, but when troublecomes, such as Coronavirus, we forget that we can depend on someone greater than the trouble we’re goingthrough. Jesus was asleep because he knew there was no reason to panic. After rebuking the wind, it was calm. When we remember that Jesus is in the boat with us, we can trust him to calm the storms.

Pauls’s letter to the Philippians chapter 4, verses 6-7. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation,by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcendsall understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”I finish my writing with a prayer from “People of faith together”on Facebook.“Lord, help us to hear you, help us to feel your presence. Help usto heed your guidance and lean into you in our time of struggleand fear.

Bless and protect those who are working to support our mostvulnerable.Love us, Lord and draw us closer to you.”Amen.Love, Gwyn.

All pulling togetherNo matter the tether

With the Lord of creationWe can help every nation

The panic from this bugWe could all do with a hug

But stay safe at homeKeep in touch through your phone

We must love one anotherLike a child from its mother

Hutton Cranswick Methodist ChurchSunday Service: Cranswick 10.30

Minister : Rev’d Robert Amos – 01377 252105Inter-Church Prayer Fellowship

Mondays 9.30 am at 13a Orchard Lane

At times I get overwhelmed by the amount of news bombarding us. I do like to be well informed and kept up to date. It’s when Journalists ask the same questions over and over and receive the same answers. I get ‘news fatigue’ .

I read recently something by a writer called Lori Wagner that caught my attention she said “We can’t see it, we can’tfeel it, we can’t hear it, we can’t touch it and yet, we have been confined to our homes for fear of the Coronavirus.” It isso true, but when we look around on TV and social media, we see that this invisible ‘force’ has changed people and theway we live.

I have been very impressed by the way that this situation has brought the best out in people. The expressions of thanksfor our amazing NHS and ALL the unsung heroes who are giving their time, their skills and even their lives to help andheal people and to keeping our world going. Those who make us believe in life and future while we are surrounded bythe threat of disease.

The Churches in the village haven’t been able to celebrate in the traditional way but have been inventive in trying newways in sharing the Easter story. Reading the account in the gospel of John it says that the disciples were ‘locked away’.They didn’t know who to trust. Judas Iscariot had betrayed Jesus for silver! Simon Peter had denied knowing who Jesuswas. They were disillusioned with life. The air had gone out of their balloon and they sat defeated, not sure what to donext. Then Jesus appeared among them within the locked room. And their lives suddenly changed, they were knockedfor six. Their mission was revitalized It taught them the value of faith, not in themselves, not in their world butsomething beyond themselves, in God and in the risen Jesus.

We don’t truly change until change is forced upon us. This virus is changing the world as we know. We will never be thesame again, it will always be a reference point. In years to come we will say “Do you remember in 2020?” I am thankfulthat the human spirit rises to the occasion when threatened or trampled. And God’s spirit infuses us with life, hope, loveand compassion and even peace at the times when we most grieve. It’s at times like these that we realise that our mostvaluable commodity is not gold or money but faith in God and in ourselves, in our families, friends and communities.Relationships are everything.

The Easter lockdown experience changed another of the disciples. The one who unfairly is given the name ‘DoubtingThomas’. He wouldn’t believe until he saw evidence of the nail marks in the risen Jesus. Eventually, he was given theopportunity to see the nail marks but he believed and said “MY Lord and my God”.

We may not see God around us. We may not see the wounds in Jesus hands and side the way Thomas needed to see.We may not hear Jesus’ voice in real time.

We may not see him face to face in the way his disciples did when he walked this earth so long ago. But that doesn’tmean his power isn’t there.

Like our invisible virus, Christians believe that his power is there in the most astonishing, loving, healing, creative wayswe can possibly imagine! God is still doing miracles all around us in a world united against a common foe. In this Easterseason may you continue to be uplifted and encouraged and May God’s blessings be upon you.

Robert Amos

Prior to the recent Government advice on social distancing, several VIB work parties had taken place to bag up masspurchase/donations of soil and manure, these currently sited in the SRA car park and to paint, re-locate and re-plantvarious troughs/containers in the village. Four metal troughs are located at the northern end of Hutton Road; twowooden 2-tier planters adjacent to the Cranswick map and one large metal trough adjacent to one of the seats onthe bottom path across the Green. The ground was being prepared for the siting of the container to go alongsidethe memorial seat adjacent to the Pond.

Three heavy duty plastic troughs had been set aside for painting/location at the Station.

Due to the current restrictions, a major Coffee Morning fund-raiser advertised and planned for Saturday 28th March,2020 was cancelled. Some funds had been raised from the sale of plants originally designated for this event and, alsofrom the sale of redundant Belfast sinks and donated box hedging plants. Raffle prizes which had been donatedwould be retained for future usage and a donated food/biscuit hamper with a limited shelf life was given toSouthlands.

The group has liaised with Church representatives about the manufacture and siting of the new planter on the Greenat the position to incorporate the Easter Cross. It was intended that planting would be undertaken on Good Fridayand the Cross erected as in previous years, although the Walk of Witness would no longer take place, due to healthconcerns.

20/071 Play Area – In order to reduce the spread of the coronavirus and keep the community safe, the play areahad been closed on the 24th March, 2020 until further notice. The repairs to the items still under guarantee hadbeen completed. The annual stock valuation was noted.

(b) Notice board, Main Street, Cranswick – It was not practical to site the new replacement notice board at theexiting location. 15

b. The Council Resolved not to take forward a suggestion to make alterations to the car parkingarrangements at the Wood. The situation was to be monitored, as it appeared that the problem wasmainly as a result of inconsiderate parking.

c. The Committee had considered a request from uniformed groups in the village seeking permission tolocate a log cabin in the South West corner of the Wood. The Committee was not convinced such aproposal was appropriate for the Wood. There was; a lack of utility services at the Wood; a high riskof trespass and damage to previous planting, effort and hard work by the Friends of CentenaryWood; potential security issues of the cabin; a risk of attracting anti-social behaviour in the mis-useof the cabin and a risk of maintenance costs falling on the Council. The Council Resolved to grant the request, in principal, and consider a costed feasibility for theproject. The feasibility proposal would need to properly address the risks that concerned theCommittee (proposed Cllr Thompson/seconded Cllr Wilson).

d. The Committee considered the new notice board, planned to be sited in the Wood, was not inkeeping with the Wood. The Council re-stated its decision, at minute 19/176, that a new singlenoticeboard be sited at Centenary Wood.

The streets in the village had been divided into nine neighbourhood pods. The group was operatingunder the Council’s Volunteer Policy. There had been a magnificent response from residents in volunteering to helpthe group. A number of vulnerable residents had received help.Cllr Wilkinson had requested that the Council provide a small budget, to be managed solely by the Council, to beused to pay for essential items for vulnerable residents whose only source of payment was cash. As a result of self-isolating some residents had no money at home and no means of getting any at present. The money would be paidback to the Council as soon as practical. To begin with, everyone in the choir would like to saya massive ‘thank you’ to all of the hardy souls whobraved the elements and also their hearing byattending our Charity Concert on Saturday 14th atForeman’s Garage. Including the choir, approximately 170 turned up for an evening of fun, song, drink and foolishness. Judging by the applauseat the end, I think it went down pretty well, unless ofcourse the audience were just glad that we hadfinished at last and they could go home!

Our adoring public were treated to an eclectic mix ofwarbling of classics from ‘For the Beauty of the Earth’through to Ed Sheehan’s ‘Perfect’ covering a host ofswing, gospel, pop and ballads along the way. Theaudience also had the chance to exercise their ownvocal chords as they sang for their supper. We alsomanaged to dredge up a couple of support acts, composed of various members of the choir, tosupplement the evening’s entertainment (????).

However, the most important thing about theevening was that we successfully raised over £1500for our chosen charity, SASH, a local organisation thatprovides support for the young homeless. Thank youso much to everyone who turned up and played theirpart in raising such a wonderful amount.

We must also at this point express our deepestgratitude to Janet Foreman, her staff and family whosupported the event so wholeheartedly and withoutwhose help, the evening would not have beenpossible.

So, what’s next? Well, the biggest announcement isthat we are changing the name of the choir. Ourveritable MD, Fiona Bone has been running the choirhere in Cranswick for just over a year, but has alsobeen the MD for the Leconfield Community Choir foralmost 10 years. Although we will continue to haveseparate rehearsals on a Monday and Tuesday, thetwo choirs will come together under a single bannerwhich will be known as The Yorkshire WoldsCommunity Choir. We hope this will encouragepeople from further afield to come along and enjoythe multiple benefits of singing.

Unfortunately, on the down side, due to the effects ofthe Coronavirus pandemic, rehearsals have beensuspended for the time being!

Once we resume, we will continue on Mondayevenings in the back room of The White Horse from7.30 - 9.00 pm. We would love to see you there.

In harmony, Haz

Here are a few activities to try at home for fun:Art apart

Can you follow your partner’s instructions to recreate theirwork of art without peeking? You will need: A4 paper, Coloured pens or pencils1. In pairs sit back to back. Everyone should draw a simplepicture, keeping it a secret from their partner.2. Person #1 should describe the picture they drew in smallchunks. They can’t say what they’ve drawn; they shouldonly describe how to draw it. For example, person #1 can’tsay ‘draw a window’ but they could say ‘draw a square, andthen put a cross in the middle of it’. Person #2 should followthe communicator's instructions, and draw a copy of thecommunicator’s picture. The artist can ask up to threequestions, to check that they have understood thecommunicator’s instructions.3. Once #2 has finished following #1’s instructions, theyshould swap roles and play again.4. Once the pairs have completed both drawings, theyshould compare the original drawings to the artists’ copies. How similar are the pictures?

Lolly stick catapultsPut your pioneering skills to the test by creating a miniaturecatapult from lolly sticks. Ready, aim, fire! You will need: Lollipop sticks (plenty of excuse to have a lollyto get enough), Elastic bands (ask your friendly postman!),Sticky tack, Pom-poms (or other ammo- paper /marshmallows), Plastic bottle caps.Make a catapultEach pair should have eight lolly sticks and some elasticbands. Each pair should stack six lolly sticks on top of each other. They should secure each end of the stack with an elasticband. It’s really important that the elastic bands are tightenough to hold the bundle together, so a grown up mightneed to offer a helping hand. Each pair should put one of their remaining sticks on top ofthe other. They should secure one end of the sticks with anelastic band. Each pair should open the free end of the two lolly sticks, sothe whole thing looks like a beak. Each pair should push their bundle of six sticks inside thebeak shape as far as it can go. It should look a bit like awonky cross, where one of the lines is held open.Wind an elastic band around the point where the twobundles meet – the middle of the wonky cross shape. One person in each pair should hold the catapult flat on thetable, while the other person twangs the top of the doublestick ‘beak’. This is the arm of the catapult, so it shouldtwang freely. Pairs could test how well their catapult is

working by trying to twang a pom-pom from the end of thearm. It might take a bit of practice!Everyone should adjust their elastic bands until they thinktheir catapult has the maximum amount of spring.Everyone should use sticky tack to attach a bottle lid to theend of their catapult arm. This will act as a handy bucket tohold the pom-poms. Let the games begin! Each pair should take it in turns to practice using theircatapult. They should put a pom-pom in the bottle lidbucket, push the arm down, and then release it to watch thepom-pom fly.You could try ‘best of three’, or keep going until the pom-poms run out. You could even use a bowl or bucket as atarget – who’ll be the first to get a pom-pom in, or who’llget the most in? Make sure pairs remember to share theircatapult and take it in turns. Here’s a link to a video which shows what you’re trying toachieve https://www.scouts.org.uk/activities/lolly-stick-catapults/

20 questionsGuess the animal, vegetable or mineral in 20 turns byworking together and asking the right questions.Choose a volunteer to go first. That person should think ofan animal, vegetable or mineral. The ‘animal’ may be any creature, living or dead, and mayinclude well-known humans (e.g. Nelson Mandela). The‘vegetable’ may be any plant or tree. The ‘mineral’ may beany natural object that is non-living (e.g. any element fromthe Periodic Table of Elements). Players should try to bespecific. For example, if they want to choose a mineral andthat mineral is a stone, it should be a type of stone like‘chalk,’ ‘granite’ or ‘limestone.’The person who has chosen should tell everyone elsewhether the thing they’ve thought of is an animal, vegetableor mineral.Between them, each group should take turns to ask theperson who chose the object a question, until 20 questionshave been asked. Each question should have a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’answer. In this time, everyone in the group should use theinformation to try and guess the animal, vegetable ormineral. Each round lasts until 20 questions have been asked or theobject is guessed. If someone guesses correctly what theanimal, vegetable or mineral was, they can choose the nextobject. If no-one guesses correctly, the chooser can haveanother turn.It is important for those asking the questions to thinkcarefully about what they asked. With a limited number ofquestions, what information did you need to get out of thechooser? What kind of questions did you ask first?Remember that every problem has a solution and that youjust have to be creative to find it. Can you think of any
