crime haven‘t hit your community yet? Then think again! The UK knife crime figures for 2007-2008 show that over the past year there were 2294 knife and sharp instrument-related incidents in Greater Manchester alone. If these figures are anything to go by, one of us may, not before long, be suffering from the after-math of a serious knife-related incident, if nothing is done to at least slow the trends down rapidly. There are many campaigns currently in place, aimed at teenagers, to attempt to prevent knife crime. Some of you may have seen the new TV adverts created by the Met Police, depicting carrying a knife or a weapon as a very ‗uncool‘ thing and being ‗not a good look‘. Whilst these adverts may be getting the message across to some people, it is still too soon to see whether they‘re actually having an effect on the overall figures of knife crime. A website called drop the weapons.org has also been set up, urging teens to drop the weapons but also aiming to give information and support, which, I‘m sure you‘ll agree, is

The Big IssueThe Big Issue With knife crime becoming a fast-

growing concern in the UK today, and

the blame being put on youngsters more

than ever, our editor questions whether

teenagers actually are the ones to

blame...

Are teenagers really responsible for the increase in knife crime? We certainly

know that more young people than ever are now resorting to carrying knives and various other weapons. But why do they feel like they need to carry lethal weapons? What effect does this have on our local communities? What can be done to prevent knife crime? What can we do as the youth of today to end knife crime? This year, in London alone, 27 teenagers have been violently stabbed to death, and this is not surprising considering, two years ago, one in five people who had been convicted for possessing a knife were be-tween ages 10 and 17. These facts are certainly a cause for concern. So, why do young people feel the need to carry a knife nowadays, with various media campaigns and educational programmes warning of the dangers? Many people believe the main cause is the fear of being bullied or attacked by peers because they do not carry a knife. Some teenagers that have been victims of crime decide to carry a knife as they feel it is a ‗safe‘ option; that it will protect them from becoming a victim once more. Think the effects of knife

Various media campaigns aimed at youngsters are trying to get the youth of today to drop their weapons, do you think they‘re working?

a step in the right direction to reaching out to our fellow teenagers who are affected by knife crime. The increase in youth knife crime could just be down to the limited activities there are for the adolescents of today to do. Maybe if the government did more to support teenagers hobbies and interests, we would see a decline in youth crime? At the end of the day, whatever the causes, it is true what they say, ―knives don‘t kill people: people kill people.‖

Ink Exclusives….Ink Exclusives…. In this edition, the Cowley Ink team go behind the scenes at our brand

new school, and score an interview with the site manager!

The buzz around school at the moment mainly seems to be cen-tred around the ‗new build‘ and, as we all know, this is expected to be completed for September of next year. We at Cowley Ink wanted to visit the site, to see how work was progressing and find out just what is in store for us when we move over to the new school. A few weeks ago we were given the privilege of a tour around the construction site quickly being turned into our new ‗super school‘, and also an inter-view with the top man there. Here‘s what he had to say for himself: How is the building work progressing?

The main building work is on tar-get at the moment, but we are behind on other things due to the bad weather we‘ve had through July and August. The main prob-lems are with the roof, as obvi-ously weather affects when we can get up there to finish work. Although we are a little behind,

we don‘t feel we will need an extension to the finish date. What do you think the pupils will benefit from the most in the new school?

The school will be modern and up to date. There will also be a lot of space, and a lot of thought, care and attention have been put into making it a good, sustainable school. It also helps that we are building in a nice, quiet area and the environment is very good too. Obviously what makes a school is what the pu-pils and teachers bring in, so we just want to give them the best place to achieve the things they want to achieve! What will the new canteen be like?

The layout will be very different to the one you currently have in your canteen at school. The

food will be similar, but there‘s go-ing to be a secondary dining area in the central atrium area on the ground floor. Here you will be able to purchase light lunches, such as sandwiches and paninis, and sit in comfortable surroundings on sofas inside. What features do you think pu-pils will enjoy the most?

The school is not going to be like a school of old; when pupils come to school, the first thing they will no-tice is it is more like going to an office rather than a school. There will be lots of natural light, and all of the classrooms will be carpeted, making it quieter and a lot warmer. Are you and your team enjoying working on the project?

We at Willmott Dixon thrive on construction, we love construction to bits! This is a wonderful school and we are working with wonderful people. It‘s a very nice school to build and in a very nice area. We also have a big local influence on site, as we have employed a lot of local contractors. The work ethic and environment is very good, clean and safe. All in all, we are really enjoying working on the pro-ject and can‘t wait to hand your n e w s c h o o l over on A u g u s t 10th next year!

This time next year, most of us will be

walking the corridors of this building!

Inked FashionInked Fashion

Cowley Ink’s senior feature writer, Danielle Davies, counts down 12 days of

Christmas fashion!

Dresses are big this

winter, especially

teamed with jeans

underneath!

Simple designs can be

brought out by using chunky

necklaces. Remember,

dresses aren‘t just for

special occasions either,

they can suit every event in

your social life teamed with

the right accessories!

Cardigans are very

on-trend this year and

they vary in different

styles, colours

and materials. Of

course cardigans are also good

for adding an extra layer to

protect against the cold weather

we seem to be experiencing

lately!

Tartan is another ‗must have‘ this Christmas an has made a major come-back on all the catwalks! The best thing about it is it can be worn casu-ally or dressed up to look more formal; they key is to make it under-stated!

The main footwear to be

seen in this Christmas is

astylish pair of boots,

and with popular high-

street shops such as New Look

copying the trends off the

catwalks, there‘s no ex-

cuse for you to not own

the latest pair! Of course

boots are a big help dur-

ing the typical harsh Brit-

ish weather, as well.

The ‗in‘ colours this

festive season are

browns, metallics and

purples. Browns bring out the warmth in your complexion, and metallics catch the light to give you a radiant glow(especially great for all those late night Christmas parties!)

Scarves are definitely an essential item this winter, they keep you warm, and can brighten up any dull outfit! Top Shop and Miss Selfridge are best!

Chunky necklaces

and bracelets are

definitely the accesso-

ries to own this

Christmas! Big necklaces can

draw attention away from the

face (good for hiding any un-

wanted attention to your latest

skin problem!)

Tights are an obvious

choice for winter, but

choosing the right sort

can be a

little more tricky!

Black tights elon-

gate the legs,

whereas patterned

tights can make

you look fun and

youthful!

Short coats worn in

striking colours also

seem to be a key-trend

this winter, they

look beautiful, elegant and

stylish! American

Apparel in Liver-pool 1 has an

amazing new range.

Hair accessories are a ‗ must have‘, no matter what your hair type is! Hats have become more popu-lar recently; great for the cold weather, and of course hiding a bad hair day! The latest range at Urban Outfitters are as cool as anything.

Gloves are definitely a

key accessory to have

during the winter

months, and why not try

wearing differ-

ent types, such

as fingerless

gloves or mit-

tens?! Fossil do

a fab range of

arm warmers in

the Met Quarter

This winter make-up is going natural, as the cold weather can wreak havoc on faces

plastered with slap! Why not try some eye shadow in an earthly colour, teamed with a little mascara?! Nude lips are also very on trend this fes-tive season...

Ink’s ‘Must Read’Ink’s ‘Must Read’ Are you a team Edward or a team Jacob?

Breaking Dawn Review By Danielle Davies

The fourth and final edition to the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer was released early August 2008. Every fan has eagerly awaited the final plot twist – including ‗will she or won‘t she?‘ The third book (Eclipse) left readers overworking their minds for solutions of the love triangle that has formed between the human Bella, her vampire boyfriend Edward and his rival, teenage werewolf Jacob. Fans were relieved to have one of their main ques-tions answered by the author herself before release – Bella Swan was confirmed to marry the vampire Edward Cullen. This then brought up the suspicion of whether or not Jacob and his werewolf pack would gatecrash the ceremony at the Cullens‘ mansion. The story starts with a wedding at the Cullens home. Later on, Bella finds herself pregnant (a shock that left the nation of readers speechless). The foetus inside Bella was discovered to be half vampire and growing at a rapid rate. Jacob finds out and unconsciously gives the information to his pack brothers when he‘s in wolf-form. The agitated group of wolves plan to attack the Cullen family of vampires (who are protecting Bella and her un-born child). Sam (the pack leader) gets the wolves into formation and picks each group to take down a certain vampire. One of the youngest wolves, Seth, refuses to fight as well as Jacob and they run off to warn the Cul-lens. Leah also joins them for protection of her younger brother Seth. The wolves keep guard outside, while in-side, the unborn child damages Bella‘s insides – Rosalie and Edward rush her upstairs for an emergency opera-tion. Rosalie selfishly cuts Bella open to save the child – momentarily forgetting about her thirst. Jacob, who also rushed upstairs, notices Rosalie lose control at the sight of blood and he knocks her down and wrestles her out of the room. Edward manages to get the child out of Bella, but Bella dies in the process. Edward uses a needle to inject his venom into her heart before it stops beating. After three days of the torturous transformation, Bella fi-nally becomes a vampire. She names her new daughter Renesmee after her and Edward‘s mothers (Renee and Esme). The Volturi (equivalent to the vampire mafia) find out about Renesmee and consider her an abomination using her as an excuse to destroy the Cullen family. Alice has a vision of them coming and tells the family to find every vampire they can to use as an allegiance. The Cullens gather all the vampires they know, as well as help from the werewolf pack and plan a defence strategy against the Volturi. Meanwhile, Alice and Jasper search the continents for another half-vampire child. Eve-rything ends on a happy note which has caused some fans to dislike the book – thinking the ending is a let down because there are still dangers that could occur. This book is the only one to cause such a big com-motion with divided opinions. Some readers say the book is too predictable, while others say it‘s totally unexpected.

I have a mixed opinion, I personally don‘t think it‘s as good as the first three books and I hated it when I first read it – but now I‘ve grown to accept and like it. Stephe-nie Meyer had planned Bella‘s transformation, her mar-riage to Edward Cullen and the birth of Renesmee when she wrote the first book ‗Twilight‘, so events in all three books have led up to these major conclusions. Breaking Dawn has sold millions of copies in the US and in the UK, and is now the number one best selling book in the UK. But why take our word for it?! Go out and buy it today, and see whether you‘re a team Edward of a team Jacob! Also, we look forward to seeing the release if the Twilight movie. Stephenie Meyer‘s best selling book has now been made into a multi-million American motion picture that will rival the latest Harry Potter film (Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince), out 19th December 2008. Look out for our review in a future edition of Cowley Ink! Some exclusive stills from the new Twilight movie:

Ink Sport….Ink Sport…. Our New Signing Here‘s what happened when the Cowley Ink team managed to catch up with our newest member of Staff, Mike Bennett!

How many years did you play for Saints? I signed in 1995 for the academy and made my debut in 2000. Then I retired on the 25th of May this year due to injury.

How did you first get started in rugby? I watched older brother play for an amateur team and became the mascot for his team. Later on I started play-ing for the same team when I was old enough.

We hear that Saints are going to give you a testimonial next year, is this true?

Yes, they have changed the regulations for being granted a testimonial, not only do you have to play so many games for a club, and be at a club for 10 years or more, you have to show you have participated in community work too.

What are you most looking forward to during your testimonial year?

I get a game at the start of 2010, and I may be able to play for about 10 minutes, I‘m looking forward to it as it will be my last ever home game at Knowsley Road before the move to the new stadium.

Is there any particular moment in your Saints career that you are really proud of?

All the finals I have played in! In particular, the 2002 Grand Final at Old Trafford, I managed to score a try, and was very happy!

Who is your idol? Chris Joynt who played for Saints up until a few years ago, he showed me the ropes when I first came to Saints.

Was playing rugby always your dream? I always dreamt of playing rugby, but still had a back-up plan, and I went to uni and carried on with my studies.

What is the change like, going from a rugby star to a member of staff at Cowley?!

It‘s a big shock! We had a baby on the way so I knew it was time to make a change after a persistent injury. I‘ve realised that there are two 8 o‘clocks in the day now!

What else were you good at in school apart from sport?

I studied Chemistry at uni, so the sciences, I would like to become a science teacher eventually.

Do you regret that you had to retire with Mick Pot-ter coming in as coach next season?

A little but I knew I had to, I wanted to carry on playing a little longer and I regret retiring on my own terms.

At what age did you leave school? I went to high school at St.Aelred‘s in Newton, and stayed on at sixth form there then went on to uni.

Tell us one thing rugby fans would be surprised to know about you?!

I‘d like to be a science teacher!

Random Questions….

What’s your favourite ice-cream? Chocolate! (that‘s an easy one!)

What’s the worst prank you’ve ever had played on you?

Jon Wilkin rang up pretending to be from a radio station and interviewed me whilst all the other team members were listening!

What’s the worst place you’ve ever woken up in?! Probably someone‘s scabby floor when I was at uni! It‘s something everyone must do, go to uni, and try to live away for the experience; it‘s once in a lifetime!

If you could spend a day in the life of someone else, who would it be?

Mr Bridge to see what it‘s like to be head of science!

If you had three wishes, what would they be? 1. To have a healthy, happy family. 2. Enough to get by money-wise. 3. To find a surgeon who can fix shoulders and other injuries no matter what! (That would probably be Scully‘s wish too!)

How do you like your eggs?! Fried with a runny yoke!

Did you have a childhood sweetheart? Nope, I‘ve kind of ruined that now haven‘t I?! That‘s quite boring!

What did you buy with your first ever wage? Went out and bought a car, even though still lived with parents!

What’s the most expensive thing you’ve ever bought, apart from a car or a house?

Engagement ring for wife!

Controversy during the 1908 Olympics!

The 1908 Summer Olympics, held in London, endured quite a bit of controversy….

At the opening parade the Finnish team were expected to march under a Russian flag instead of a Finnish one, so they chose to march without a flag at all!

The Swedish flag had not been displayed above the stadium, so the members of the Swedish team decided not to take part in the ceremony!

The US flag had also not been displayed above the stadium before the opening, so the US flag bearer refused to dip the flag to the royal box, which has led to a tradition whereby, ever since this happened, international customs encourage dipping the flag in respect to heads of state, but the US flag bearers no longer do.

The 400m race was won by British runner Lieutenant Wyndham Halswelle after he ran the track on his own, because the other US runners refused to run due to an earlier incident where one of them had been accused of interference.

Finally, at the end of the marathon race, Italian Dorando Pietri, who was the first to enter the stadium, collapsed several times and ran the wrong way! Not far from the finish, two officials took him by the arms and brought him to the line. As a consequence, after crossing the line he was disqualified. The medal went to 2nd placed American Johnny Hayes, but as Pietri had not actually been responsible for his disqualification, the next day he was awarded with a gold cup.

The Eskimo Olympics

In Fairbanks, Alaska, during the later half of July ever year, the WEI Olympics are held. So, what exactly are the WEI Olympics?! The World Eskimo Indian Olympics of course!

To Golf, or not to Golf???

An Italian golfer, by the name of Giuseppe Pimentos, back in 1976 was once involved in a high speed car accident that was so severe that almost every bone in his body was broken. Doctors stated that he would never again be able to play golf! But…. this wasn‘t going to stop Giuseppe…..

A year later, fused together with wire and steel joints, he managed to arrive at the Napoli Open. On his first swing he drove his ball straight into the water! While trying to retrieve his ball from the water‘s edge, he overbalanced and fell in! As a result, Giuseppe drowned in a mere foot of water while other club members were attempting to lift him out.

Bet you didn’t know….Bet you didn’t know….

Underwater rugby!

Cluster ballooning!

Bicycle polo!

We know that Hard Lane field gets wet but this is ri-diculous! OK so it isn’t really...but it is a real sport. Players have to hold their breath for up to two minutes

Polo, but not as we know it… Can’t af-ford a horse? Not posh enough for the stables? Yes you too can look like a weirdo in this rather mad variation.

A sport that has its ups and downs… you strap loads of balloons to your back and race against other idiots. Look out for the power lines!

Ski bobbing!

Barrel racing!

Cluster ballooning!

Speed cubing!

Bored of riding your bike on the pavement? Find no joy in skiing on skis? Why not ski on a bike! Make yourself look like a total fool with ski bobbing fun!

Guess what, it’s like the rugby one but this time it’s with a puck and shortened stick. This was going to actually be an Olympic sport! Don’t get your sticks caught in a grid!

It’s not the most interesting way to get repetitive strain in-jury– you have to solve as many cubes as possible in 2 minutes. Your hands will be a blur, your brain will be spin-ning, you’ll have no friends!

Yeeeee-haaaaaa! This sounds a bit one sided (barrels don’t run very fast!) but it’s actually really popular in rodeos. Compete in this sport and play a banjo in the mountains– Americans, don’t you just love ‘em!?
