CPR – Why learn it?
It saves the life of a friend or family member in a medical emergency
Research shows that heart attack victims have double the chance of survival if they are immediately given CPR
CPR can unblock a choking victim’s airway
CPR aids survival of drowning and suffocation victims

Warning: Begin CPR only if you have been trained
properly!
Determine Responsiveness If victim appears unconscious,
gently shake him/her and shout, “Are you OK?”
If no response, have somebody call Emergency Medical Services (911)
If alone, call EMS before proceeding to ABCs Call 911 when
victim is unresponsive

Determine Responsiveness A is for Airway B is for Breathing C is for Circulation

A is for Airway Roll victim onto
his/her back, supporting head and neck
Open airway by head-tilt / chin-lift maneuver
Look, listen, and feel for breathing for 3 - 5 seconds
If no response, proceed to B

B is for Breathing Pinch shut the victim’s nose and
put your mouth over victim’s mouth making a tight seal
Give 2 slow breaths If breathing does not go through
(the chest does not rise), reposition the victim and try again
If breathing still does not go through, perform the Heimlich maneuver to clear airway
If breathing does go through, proceed to C

C is for Circulation Check carotid pulse for 5 to
10 seconds If there is a pulse but no
breathing, give 1 breath every 5 seconds (about 12 per minute) until the victim is breathing or help arrives
If there is no pulse, begin chest compressions

Remember; begin CPR only if you have been
trained properly!
