BEFORESTARTINGENGINEAddMotor Oil

• Only use high quality detergentoil rated with API service classifica-tion SF, SG or SH. Select the oil'sSAE viscosity grade according toyour expected operating tempera-ture. Above 32OF, use SAE 30;below 32OF, use 5W30.

NOTE: Although multi-viscosityoils(5W30,.10W30 etc.) improve start-ing in cold weather, these oils willresult id increased oil consumptionwhen used above 32OF. Check

engine oil more frequently to avoidpossible engine damage from run-ning low on oil.

• Be sure that engine is level. Re-move dipstick (A, Figure 3-10).

• Fill with recommended oil to be-tween "Full" and "Add" marks on

dipstick (approximately 32 oz.).Pour slowly and do not overfill. While pouring, stop frequently, re-insert dipstick until it is seatedcompletely, remove and check oillevel. (Wipe dipstick each time be-fore re-inserting.) Replace dipsticksecurely.

• Check oil before each use. Add ifneeded.

• Change oil after the first 2 operat-ing hours and every 25 operatinghours thereafter (more often in ex-tremely dusty or dirty conditions).

• Stop engine and allow it to coolfor three minutes before removingfuel fill cap (B, Figure 3-10). Donot check fuel level or add fuelwhile indoors.

• Clean area around fuel fill capand remove fill cap. Fill gas tankwith clean, fresh unleaded gaso-line. Do not mix oil with gasoline.

• Using a funnel or spout, fill tankto 1/2 inches below bottom of fueltank filler neck to prevent spills andto allow for fuel expansion.

• Insta_ll_fillcap securely and wipeup any Spilled gasoline.

WARNING: Experience indicatesthat alcohol blended fuels (gasoholor using ethanol or methanol) canattract moistura which leads toseparation and formation of acids-during storage. Acidic gas candamage the fuel system of an en-gine while in storage. To avoidproblems, the fuel system shouldbe emptied before storage for 30days or longer. Drain the gas tank, start the engine and let it run untilthe fuel lines and carburetor are

empty. Use fresh fuel next season.See STORAGE instructions for ad-ditional information. Never use en-gine or carburetor cleaner productsin the fuel tank or permanent dam-age may occur.

WARNINGTo avoidinjury or propertydamage:

• Before mowing, thoroughlyinspect area where mower is to be usedand remove all stones, sticks, wires, bones, nails and other foreignobjects.• Disengagemowerblades beforecrossinggravel drives, roads, or side-walks to prevent blades from throwing stones or other hazardousobjects.

Mow When

LawnIs Dry

For best results, avoid c

grass when it is wet. Wet grasstends to form clumps which inter-fere with the cutting action. Thebest time to mow is in the late af-

ternoon or early evening when the

grass is usually dry.

1

CutTop1/3 of .... _

GrassBlade_

Cutting more than 1/3 of grasslength may cause the grass to be-

come excessively dry. In tallgrass, it may be necessary to mowat a higher setting and then mowagain at the desired height.NOTE: The cutting height is criti-cal to achieving a well-groomed

lawn. You should experiment withvarious settings to find that "justright" cutting height.

VaryCuttingPattern

Vary the cutting pattern fromweek to week to help prevent mat-

ting of the grass. One week, mowfrom north to sooth, the next weekmow from east to west.: Overlapseveral inches when mowing toobtain an even appearance.

MowingonSlopes

Do not mow excessively steepslopes (see WARNING statementbelow). Slow down and exercise

extreme caution when changing di-rection on slopes. Before mowingon slopes, check the engine oil lev-el and make sure that the level is at

the FULL mark. Maintaining aFULL oil level is particularly im-portant when operating on slopesas oil can be drained away from vi-tal engine parts.

WARNINGTo avoid injury or propertydamage:

• Maximum safe operatingangle is 15o.• Exceeding maximum safeoperating angle may causetipping or loss of footing.• Do not mow wet slopes.• Mow across slopes, not upanddown.• Exercise extreme cautionwhen changing direction onslopes.

21

MulchingLeaves

• The mower can also be used tomow leaves in the fall. The leaf

particles filter down into the lawn

and provide added fertilizer.

• The leaves must be dry in orderto be mulched.

• Use a slower ground speed if theleaves are not mulched into fine

particles.

• If you mulch oak leaves (whichadd acid to the soil), add lime tothe lawn in the spring to reduce theacidity of the soil.

KeepMowerBladesSharp

For best mower performance, keep the blades sharp. A dull bladewill tear, bruise and split the endsof grass.

Clean Mower Frequently

Clean the underside of the mower

deck frequently to remove grassbuild-up.

Precision_imming

For precision trimming, use theslowest gear and inch the moweralong by "feathering" the WheelDrive Control lever. Or, disengagethe wheel drive by releasing theWheel Drive Control so that youcan manually maneuver the mower(if needed, put the Gear SelectLever in neutral so that the wheels

turn freely).

Mowing Ditches

If you have to mow ditches, stopthe engine and adjust the cuttingheight to its highest setting. Mowin the direction of the ditch. Mowboth sides of the ditch fast, andthen mow the bottom. When

mowing ditches, watch out forcans, bottles, or other debris.

Do netoperate the mower until theBlade Brake Control Systemhas been repaired.

Failure to dothis couldresultfn personal injury or propertydamage.

1. Park mower on a portion oflawn which has not been recentlymowed.

2. Set the cutting height so themower cuts 1/3 of the grass height.

3. Start the engine.

4. Press the Operator PresenceControl down against the handle-bar grip and push the Blade DriveControl fully forward until it stays inthe engaged position.

5. Put the Gear Select Lever in

the No. 1 setting.

6. Engage the wheels with theWheel Drive Control and drive themower for several feet. Then re-lease the Operator Presence Con-trol.

A. Look at the lawn just mowed. The lawn should be cut up tothe point where the OperatorPresence Control was released.

So Press the Operator PresenceControl against the handlebargrip but DO NOT re-engage theBlade Drive Control. Drive themower forward for several morefeet. Release the OperatorPresence Control and look atthe lawn. The grass shouldNOT have been cut. This indi-cates that the Operator Pres*

- ence Control has disengagedthe blade drive and stopped theblades.

7. If the mower cuts the grass inStep 6-B, the Operator PresenceControl is NOT disengaging theblade drive. Immediately stopthe engine, disconnect thespark plug wire, and move thewire away from the spark plug.

Some adjustments will need to bemade periodically to properlymaintain your equipment.

All adjustments in the Service andAdjustments section of this manu-al should be checked.at leastonce each season.

Keep the air filters clean andchange the spark plug once ayear. A clean air filter system anda new spark plug will help yourengine run better and last longer.

BeforeEachUse

• Check engine oil level.

• Check all hardware fortightness.

• Check that all guards andshields are in place and properlysecured.

MOTOROIL

• Only use high quality detergentoil rated with API service classifi-cation SF, SG or SH. Select theoil's SAE viscosity grade accord-ing to your expected bperatingtemperature. Above 32OF, useSAE 30; below 32OF, use 5W30.

NOTE: Although multi-viscosityoils (5W30, 10W30 etc.) improvestarting in cold weather, these oilswill result in increased oil con-

sumption when used above 32OF.Check engine oil more frequentlyto avoid possible engine damagefrom running low on oil.

SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS

WHEELDRIVEBELTADJUSTMENT

The wheel drive belt requires anadjustment if loss of drive belt ten-sion (slippage) occurs. This ismost noticeable when more trac-

tion is required (such as going upslopes).

ToTestWheel Traction

1. Park machine on a paved (con-crete, etc.) surface with front edgeup against a sturdy wall, fence, etc.

2. Put Gear Select Lever in No. 1

setting.

IMPORTANT: Do not park againsta painted or sided wall. Testingthe wheel drive system requiresmachine to be forcibly pushedagainst wall. Damage to paint orsiding could result.

3. With engine running, and ma-chine placed firmly up againstwall, hold down Operator Pres-ence Control and fully engagewheel drive by squeezing WheelDrive Control until it contactshandlebar.

4. Wheels should slip on pavedsurface. If they do not, an adjust-ment is required.

ToAdjustWheel Drive Belt

1. Stop engine, wait for all partsto stop moving, and disconnectspark plug wire.

2. Remove cotter pin (A, Figure5-12A) from upper end of WheelDrive Control rod. Slide red out of

lever assembly.

3. Loosen jam nut (D, Figure5-12).

Figure 5-12: Wheel drive belt adjustment.

4. Thread red (E, Figure 5-12) oneor two turns clockwise for moretension or counterclockwise forless tension.

5. Insert rod back into hole inWheel Drive Control lever and in-stall cotter pin. Bend ends of cot-ter pin to secure.

6. Retest wheel traction. Repeatadjustment procedure, if neces-sary. Most comfortable operationwill be obtained when the adjust-ment allows the lever to just makecontact with the handgrip as suffi-cient wheel traction is achieved.

When adjustment is complete, tighten jam nut (D) firmly againstblock (B).
