EXHIBITS & EVENTS Summer 2015

Through May 23From the Bronx to Florida: The Life Sculptures of Rigoberto TorresPuerto Rican-born sculptor Rigoberto Torres’ colorful life-size plaster and fiberglass figurative sculptures are rooted in a celebration of daily life in the South Bronx where he grew up. His work, described as “humanistic naturalism,” provides sensitive studies of real people — family, friends, neighborhood heroes and strangers he has met during public castings. The two-gallery exhibition is on display at the Alice & William Jenkins Gallery on the Crealdé main campus and Hannibal Square Heritage Center.

June 5 – August 15Crealdé 40th Anniversary Homecoming ExhibitionCrealdé-inspired artists who have taken classes here in the not too recent past and who have moved on to become exhibiting professional artists share current work and stories of how their artistic careers were influenced through experiences at the school. This exhibition is curated by Barbara Tiffany, Director, Painting & Drawing and Chair, Crealdé Gallery Committee. The opening Friday, June 5, coincides with the Annual Membership Meeting, from 7-7:30 p.m., followed by a reception until 9:30 p.m.

April 20 – August 1Storytellers Revisited: Parramore and Geneva

Crealdé created the Storytellers program in 1996 to bring dignity to underserved communities through the documentary photography of the teens who live there. They learn

from professional photographers how

to capture images and develop them, as well as to write an accompanying text. The Storytellers XV: Parramore and Storytellers XVI: Geneva projects led by photography instructor Sherri Bunye will be exhibited, juxtaposing city and rural living experiences in Central Florida.

He says that in the context of a midlife catharsis, he interrupted over 25 years of working in steel and began making artworks from recyclable detergent bottles. With quality of craft as an important issue for him, he finds that making recycled plastic art truly energizes his creative spirit. Website: www.plastiquarium.com
