Current State
Healthcare systems are facing a crisis of escalating benefit costs for employee
healthcare. Projected trends predict that this expense will exceed the net operating income in the near future. This wholly avoidable crisis
jeopardizes the Sisters of St. Joseph’s mission to provide care to all people.

Worksite Health Promotion Development Timeline
2006 – CEO issues transformational statement with vision to focus on wellness as a mission and business strategy
2008 – Formation of a division dedicated to fulfilling the transformational statement of developing the wellness model
2008 – Executive Wellness pilot program 2010 – Worksite health promotion pilot model launched at one
campus. Consortium partnership with Dr. Dee Edington 2011 –Executive Leadership support to implement system-wide
model to actualize zero trends goal 2015 – Projected date to reach inflation-adjusted zero trends in
employee healthcare benefit costs 2020 – $310 million dollar cumulative cost avoidance for
employee-only savings. Double opportunity if covered dependants are added into the benefit.

inspired by Dr. Edington’s model for enhancing employee health management. The overarching goals are to help SJHS and other employers optimize the well being, health, and performance of their workforce while reducing the avoidable healthcare utilization to flatten the upward trend of healthcare benefit expenses.
