Creating and Exporting Digital ID Signature

Certificate for Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader DC

If you have never created a certificate before, please follow all the directions outlined below.

• If you already have a certificate skip to Step 11 to register your digital certificate (you can access the screen in Step 11 by clicking on Edit, then Preferences, then Security and clicking on the More Button in the Identities & Trusted Certificates section of the window).

Please note that the creation of an appearance is separate from creating a certificate and can be done any time. You can create as many appearances as you wish. If you wish to create a new appearance, you do not need to create a new certificate or export and email the certificate.

• Refer to the Create an Appearance for Adobe Acrobat or Reader DC User Guide for the step to create an appearance.

1. Open Adobe Acrobat and select Preferences from the Edit Menu.

2. Scroll and click on Signatures under Categories.

3. Click on the More…. Button in the Identities & Trust Certificates section.

4. Click the Add ID button.

5. Select A New digital ID I want to create now and then click the Next Button to continue.

6. Select New PKCS#12 digital ID file and click the Next button to continue.

7. Complete all the identity information fields and click the Next Button to continue.

For PennDOT staff:

Organization Name is PennDOT. Organization Unit is the Division and Section you work in.

For Business Partners:

Organization is your Company’s Name. Organization Unit is the Department/Area you work in at your Company.

8. Be sure the location listed in the File Name field is a location you can access later.

a. Click the Browse button to select a new location to save the file in.

b. Be sure to select a location that you can access from whatever computer you will use to sign PDF documents.

9. Enter a Password and Confirm Password – Adobe will rate the strength of your Password.

a. Be sure to make note of this password.

b. Certificate passwords CANNOT be reset or recovered if forgotten.

c. If you forget your password, you will need to create a new digital certificate.

10. Click the Finish Button to complete the certificate creation.

11. Select your certificate and click the Button.

Be sure you select the certificate with Digital ID File in the Storage Mechanism column.

12. Click the button in the Certificate Viewer window.

13. Make sure the radio buttons next to Save the exported data to a file and Acrobat FDF Data Exchange are selected and then click on the Next button.

14. If the Identity step displays, add the information and then click the Next button. This section will only display the first time you export a certificate. All future exports, the Identity section will not display as a step.

15. Click the Sign… button to ‘sign’ the certificate.

16. Enter your certificate’s password and then click the Sign button.

17. You should receive a success message in the Signature area now. Click the Next button.

18. Click on the Browse button to select a location you can access later, to save the file, delete whatever is in the File name field and name the file as follows:

For PennDOT staff: LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME_MI_ORG CODE For Business Partners: LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME_MI_EMPLOYEE NUMBER

BE SURE TO USE THE NAMING CONVENTION DEFINED IN STEP 18

19. Click Save when you are ready to save the file.

20. Click the Next button to continue.

21. Now click the Finish button to export your certificate data.

22. Click the Ok Button to close the Certificate Viewer dialogue window.

23. Click the red X to close the Digital ID and Trusted Certificate Settings window.

24. Click the Ok button close the Preferences window.

25. Email the exported certificate file (.fdf extension) to [email protected].
