Who are we?
• The tick is awarded to courses which can prove they connect with
industry and teach professional skills that make sure graduates are work-
ready. We are extending this scheme to FE courses soon
• We have other schemes and bursaries for when students finish their course.
Our Trainee Scheme is Trainee Finder
• Our Funding comes from a variety of sources
• Screen Skills provides careers information and training for
roles in film, television, visual effects, animation and games
• We have an accreditation scheme for higher education courses, the ScreenSkills Tick

• More studios – we don’t have enough space . New studios planned in Dagenham, Manchester and Birmingham
• Government estimates 600,000 new jobs in the Creative Industries by 2023*, Film alone needs 10,000 by 2022
• Jobs in the Creative Industries are the “least likely to be replaced by robots”**

14.5 billion in GVA generated by the screen industries, excluding games (ABS 2016)
+16% employment growth in the screen industries (2013-2017)
+7% employment growth across the UK economy (2013-2017)
Film and high-end television production spend in the UK over £3.1 billion in 2018
Netflix and Amazon spent £150m on British-made TV shows in 2017driving the UK production sector to a record high
By 2020 total UK sales revenue for for games ( £5.5bn) is expected to overtake total spend on books (£4.9bn)

photos (2.13billion users in 2018)
• 15% of the world’s population was connected
to the internet ( 43% in 2015, 51% in 2017 est 66%
by 2020 )

Working in the industry • Many people aspire to some kind of a secure
job with a company
• Creative and Media isn’t like that , particularly TV production & film
• Most young people entering the industry will have to be prepared to network and promote themselves
• They may have to work freelance or set up a small business
Skills shortages
Reasons given are:
• Competition from inside the sector
• Low number of skilled applicants

58% said business activity had increased and 86%
reported difficulties recruiting staff
