work on Taylor Jam
es’s site,I w

as this in-between
stage in which I saw
echoes of the way I treat

e had to work
with an existing im

ine,” Von explains. “We

ith a drawing of an

feel which
provided a great startingblock for Taylor Jam

myself and Von discussed
ideas to develop thecreative in a w
ay that would
stand out in 3D. We sent
work-in-progress im
agesand thoughts for theoverall direction to Vonregularly. For m
e achieving‘success’ w
as aboutgetting to a result that w
eboth felt happy w
ith, onethat respected his w
ork asinspiration. So I did m
yutm
ost to pay close atten-tion to Von’s feedbackw
hilst also creating some-
thing that reflected ourskills and abilities at TaylorJam
es,” he explains.“G
etting to the final image
was a real challenge; how
do you take a picture fromone m
edium to another
[Von works in pencil and
ink] – to create something
new and interesting, w
hilststill respecting the illustrative qualities of theoriginal? The piece didn’tneed to be stereotypically3D, ie w
ith highlyconvincing form
andshading, and I certainlydidn’t w
ant it to be a
demonstration of any kind
of gimm
icks. Com
putergraphics has such lim
itlesscreative possibilities, thereis no inherent ‘style’, sow
orking in 3D you have to
be able to adapt to everyfresh challenge.”
For Von, “it was an inter-
esting journey, with quite a
bit of to and fro, but endedup providing a lot of foodfor thought of w
here thingscould be taken in the futureon other projects. I’m
veryhappy w
ith the finaloutcom
e. It’s always inter-
esting to hear how
someone interprets your
work and so to see how
they do that with their ow
nskills and technology isdoubly so. W
ith this kind ofproject there’s alw
ays a lurking danger that theim
age gets taken off on am
assive tangent but thefinal piece has retained the essence of the originalw
hilst taking it to a differentarena, show
