Efforts to grasp and manage the risks of financial reporting fraud and misappropriation continue to evolve, but much uncertainty remains about what works best. This dynamic program provides specific steps to help auditors and accountants fully meet fraud-handling expectations. The “how to” approach helps participants identify fraud exposures and risks and provides practical ideas on how to handle those exposures. Course materials, developed by a nationally known fraud expert, include examples of what can go wrong and how fraud is reflected in the records.

FIN 48 - Uncertainty in Income Taxes: A Must Know for Tax CPAs and Accountants/Auditors!

FASB declined to extend the effective date for non public entities for one year. Thus, starting in early 2007 for public entities (2008 for non public entities), FIN 48 significantly modifies the accounting and disclosures relating to uncertainties in income taxes covered by FAS 109, Accounting for Income Taxes. This Interpretation likely will now require an unprecedented involvement of tax professionals in calculating, recording, and/or reviewing tax provisions.

Reporting and Disclosure for Small Businesses: Problems and Practical Solutions

John Cox is a successful entrepreneur and president/CEO of The Rome Group, Inc., a nationally recognized consulting firm specializing in Lean Six Sigma Methodology value stream analysis, strategic planning, operational excellence best practices, project management, re-engineering, visioning and leadership development. He is also a visiting professor at the University of Dallas. Dr. Cox works mostly with Fortune 500 firms but is very active in civic and educational groups. He has authored three books and published many articles on various business related topics. He frequently appears on network radio and television discussing business and management issues and their future impact. He is a member of the Arlington Sunrise Rotary Club, The Deming Group, the American Marketing Association, Sales and Marketing Executives International, the Organizational Development Network, International Society of Six Sigma Professionals, International Society for

Performance Improvement and the National Speakers Association.

Edgar Gee is a local firm practitioner from Knoxville, Tennessee with over 35 years of professional experience. He works closely with small business in areas of auditing, tax planning, IRS representation and litigation support services and business valuations. A noted author, Mr. Gee has published articles in the Tax Advisor relating to the largest independent contractor case against the IRS in U.S. history. He testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on the Oversight of IRS Activities in 1996. He is co-author of PPC’s Guide to Worker Classification. Winner of the Max Block Award by NYSSCPAs for Distinguished Article of the Year 2000, “Independent Contractor or Employee: How the Process Works Today.” Mr. Gee is also mentioned in the New York Times bestseller, “What the IRS Doesn’t Want You to Know.” Mr. Gee speaks nationally to many professional organizations. He was past president of the

Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants. He was the recipient of the Discussion Leader of the Year award from the Tennessee Society of CPAs in 2001.

Thomas is a shareholder in the firm of Newell & Newell, PC located in Columbus, Ga. Tom graduated cum laude from Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Ga. in 1980. He started the firm with his wife Silvia Newell, CPA in 1986, prior to that his public accounting experience included both local firms and international firms. Tom is an active peer reviewer having performed over 200 reviews and has been involved with the peer review program since 1989. Tom served on the Georgia Society of CPAs (GSCPA) peer review committees from 1989 to 1993. In 1993 Tom was selected to be one of the technical reviewers for the GSCPA and served as a technical reviewer for nine years. Tom has also served several years on the accounting and auditing committee for the GSCPA. Tom has been a frequent speaker for at the GSCPA’s Southeastern Accounting Show, Tax Forum (A&A topics) and the Accounting Institute. Tom is also a discussion leader for various continuing education courses on A&A topics of compilation and

review, nonprofit, audit & accounting, and peer review.
