    Spelling bees have been aroundsince the 1800s, and the firstNational Spelling Bee was heldin 1925 (with the winning wordbeing gladiolus). Bees are anexciting and fun way to contendagainst your peers, but aretypically only held for childrenages 6 to 14. This month, adults

    will have the opportunity tocompete, show off their spellingskills, and support a wonderfulcause at the 15th annualSpell-A-Round Creek Countyspelling bee, benefitting theCreek County Literacy Program

    explains. Businesses,organizations and individualsdonate time and money to raiseawareness of the program bycreating two and three personteams to square off in amulti-round spelling bee. Lastyear the event raisedapproximately $10,000, and our

    goal this year is $15,000.The cost for a team of three,

    which includes seating anddinner, team entry, and threeevent T-shirts, is $175. Once ateam pays the entry fee, a list ofabout 100 words is sent to theteam captain. Over 90 percent ofthe words from the competitionare taken from this word list, sostudy it hard! After a deliciousdinner catered by Freddies,

    teams are seated together andgiven a small marker board. Thejudge will then give the sameword to all teams, who will writethe word on the marker board.One point for each correct letteris awarded, and once a wrongletter is written, the rest of theletters of the word do not countfor points. After an allottednumber of words are given,points are tallied and the topthree teams advance to theUltimate Stinger Round.

    (CCLP). The event will be heldSaturday, April 13 at 6 p.m. atFreddies BBQ & Steakhouse inSapulpa and will feature dinner,a silent auction, prizes and funfor all.

    An exciting new addition tothe bee this year is bribery. Ifyour team does not spell theword correctly, you may stilladvance by bribing the judges.The amount of bribery moneyneeded to advance increases witheach round. We recommend

    your team fundraise for briberymoney in advance, says Melissa.This will be Administrative

    Assistant Debbie Marshallssixth go-round at the bee, andshe said its always a whole lot offun. Everyone is dressed up inthemed costumes, cheering andhaving a great time. Adding tothe fun, drawings for door prizeswill be held throughout theevening.

    The theme this year is I

    Want to BEE a Star!. Attendeesand participants are encouragedto dress to the nines likeglamorous movie stars at anawards show. Prizes will beawarded for Best Team Name,Best Theme Costumes and BestSpellers. The prize for mostmoney raised will be determinedafter the event. Winning spellersreceive trophies, and a travelingtrophy is presented to the top

    team. Last years overall winnerwas The Wanna-BEEZZZ ofSapulpa Public Library.

    Program is also currently seekinggarage sale donations for theirIndoor Rummage Sale onThursday, May 2. All proceedsof the sale will benefit CCLP.They are accepting donations ofgently-used electronics, house-hold items and toys (no cloth-ing).     The 15th annual Spell-A-Round Creek County fundraiser will be held April 13

    at Freddies BBQ & Steakhouse to support Creek County Literacy.
